INDIANAPOLIS – A 10-year-old lion at the Indianapolis Zoo died Monday morning after being attacked by another lion.Zoo staff heard “unusual amount of roaring from the outdoor lion yard” and say an adult female lion, Zuri, attacking a male lion, Nyack, according to a press release.Veterinary staff said Nyack died of suffocation from injuries to the neck. Indianapolis Zoo said staff made every attempt to stop Zuri from holding Nyack by the neck but were unsuccessful. The two lions lived together for eight years. Indianapolis Zoo said they had no indication that anything like this would ever occur. The attack happened before the zoo was open to the public. "He was a magnificent male lion and left his legacy in his three cubs," Indianapolis Zoo said in a press release. "He will be missed by guests, members, volunteers and staff." 864

In just the latest reminder of the dangers of pollution in our oceans, a dead whale in Indonesia has been found with 13.2 pounds (six kilograms) of plastic waste in its stomach. The 31.17-foot sperm whale was found near Kapota Island in Wakatobi National Park, southeast of Sulawesi.Park officials found bags, plastic bottles, sandals and 115 plastic cups in the whale's stomach, as well as a sack containing more than 1,000 pieces of string."Although we have not been able to deduce the cause of death, the facts that we see are truly awful," said Dwi Suprapti, marine species conservation coordinator at WWF-Indonesia, in a statement to CNN.The macabre discovery was made in an area popular with tourists and comes at a time of increasing concern over the impact of plastic pollution on marine life.In June, a short-fin male pilot whale died in southern Thailand and was later found to have ingested more than 17 pounds of plastic bags and packaging.During an autopsy, veterinarians found more than 80 plastic bags in the whale's stomach.A 2015 report by Ocean Conservancy and the McKinsey Center for Business and Environment found that over 50% of the plastic leaking into world oceans comes from China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, suggesting that the two whales died in dangerous waters for marine life. The report claims that a 65% reduction in plastic waste leakage in those five countries would lead to a 45% reduction globally.Without intervention, the amount of plastic cluttering the Earth's oceans will triple within a decade, according to a recent study by the UK government. However, there is evidence that lawmakers are taking notice of the threat, as the European Parliament voted to ban single-use plastics in October. The proposal covers items such as straws, cotton swabs and cutlery, in addition to obliging EU states to recycle 90% of plastic bottles by 2025.In October, the dangers of plastic were underlined when a decades-old bottle washed up almost intact on a UK beach. The plastic bottle of dishwashing liquid was at least 47 years old, with its branding still clearly visible.The-CNN-Wire 2140

In front of Luke Sherlock’s home in Boca Raton, Florida sits a memorial stone for his niece, Gina Rose Montalto, and signs of support for her high school, Marjory Stoneman Douglas. FULL COVERAGE: Parkland school shooting | Cruz seen laughing in jail days after shootingGina was one of 17 people murdered during the Valentine’s Day massacre in Parkland. She was a freshman. “Gov. (Rick) Scott came to Gina’s funeral and spoke with the family before the mass ceremony. He was very sincere about getting some things done to make our schools safer,” Luke said in an interview. The one major piece of legislation missing from the 0 million gun control and school safety bill, he said, is putting assault style weapons in the same category as silencers and sawed off shotguns, which are not legal to purchase. “Some guns are simply too dangerous to be in the public’s hands,” he said. He’s leery, as is Scott, of arming school personnel, which this bill would allow. “This bill does a lot of good things and if we have to live with that provision, I would prefer to have that provision in the bill and take the rest of it,” he said. He is behind raising the age to buy a gun to 21, a three-day waiting period, banning bump stocks, and giving authorities power to take guns away from people who may be a threat. All those items are in the bill. “Right now, there’s a good bill out there. That’s a great start to common sense gun control in this country and I ask that Gov. Scott sign,” he said. Scott will meet with parents Friday before deciding whether or not to sign the gun and school safety measure. Luke and some parents are working with Boca Middle School on creating a community watch-type program for parents to help patrol campus with school resource officers. The parents wouldn’t be armed, but provide and extra set of eyes to help the school resource officers look out for potential threats. 1982

It took Congress almost nine months, but they have finally agreed on another stimulus pkg. The deal provides a one-time stimulus check, extends the eviction mortarium another month, and adds an additional 0 supplemental to extended unemployment benefits. In total, it’s a 0 billion plan that now protects roughly 40 million Americans from potentially being evicted from their homes and prevents 12 million Americans from losing out on unemployment benefits.“It is a success and a win because that won’t happen,” said Stephanie Freed, “Beyond that, it’s not much of a win.”Stephanie Freed is among millions of Americans who are unemployed and have already expired out of unemployment benefits. Under the new deal, she will be able to now apply for unemployment again and will be eligible for the additional 0 weekly supplemental. However, even with reinstated and slightly higher benefits, it will still be a struggle to get by.“The 0 is half of what people needed to survive, and the bigger problem is that it is not retroactive,” said Freed. “There has been five months with no additional benefit, state UI is not a livable wage.”Freed has created an online organization called ExtendPUA in order to help others who are also struggling with unemployment during the pandemic. There are members of Extend PUA that have been getting as little as a week in unemployment benefits since the 0 federal supplemental dropped off in July.Grant McDonald is the co-founder of Extend PUA and knows firsthand that state unemployment benefits alone are not enough to survive. Like many, he has had to drain his savings and take on significant debt to just keep him barely afloat.“Personally, I have not kept up with the number because I have just been trying to keep up with it all,” said McDonald. “I am just trying to pay as much as I can and watch my savings slowly disappear.”In the latest stimulus package, Congress did agree on a 0 stimulus check that some say could help with debt accumulated.“I think 0 is what rich people think poor people think is a lot of money, when in reality, that additional 0 plus the 0, one-time, is not going to help anyone pay any of the accumulated debts,” McDonald added. For Freed, McDonald, and the thousands of unemployed people who have reached out to Extend PUA, the new stimulus deal is something, but nothing close to what they’ve been waiting nearly nine months for.“We understand there are some wins here but mostly it means that we have to keep fighting,” said Freed. The Biden administration has called this latest package a “down payment” to the American people, signaling an expectation for yet another more robust stimulus deal. Members of Congress, on both sides of the aisle, have also mentioned a need for another stimulus deal soon. However, similar messaging was heard after the passage of the CARES Act, and then it took nearly nine months to see a significantly smaller relief package. 2965
