SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The community is rallying around a North Park Church that provides shelter for homeless youth, Lead Pastor Brandan Robertson said Thursday night at their prayer vigil.The Missiongathering Christian Church was slapped with 29 violations from the City, and told it needed to re-zone to accommodate their music venue, "The Irenic". They were also told to shut down their homeless youth shelter that provides a hot meal and place to sleep Tuesday nights, unless they purchase a conditional use permit."...because the Code says churches can only host shelters 30 times a year without a permit, and we host our shelter 50. A CUP could cost an upwards of ,000 just to cover the 20 extra nights per year that we provide a safe space for homeless youth," the Gofundme raising money for the church stated.The church quickly remedied 7 of the violations, "new fire extinguishers, we put in fire and smoke and CO2 detectors in the area where the youth sleep. We've gone around and fixed panels that are down, put in new exit signs, posted the occupancy in all the rooms," Robertson said.Robertson said they didn't know they were in violation and the fire department completes an inspection every year.Robertson said their concerts pay the mortgage. The church has lived at the corner of Polk Ave. and Illinois St. for 10 years. The concerts end by 10 p.m. to keep in accordance with city noise restrictions, a supporter added.Robertson said the trouble started when a neighbor complained about the noise and the shelter. Robertson said police came to the church multiple times, even on Easter Sunday and one morning, in the end of July, Robertson said eight City inspectors showed up. He said he got a message in the mail August 31st to shut down.The Gofundme raised more than ,000 in two days to help with legal fees. Robertson said they have hundreds of signatures on a petition and community members filled Councilman Chris Ward's voicemail.Dozens showed up to the church's prayer vigil Thursday, praying, singing and donating to the cause."The city hasn't been doing what they need to do, the church is leading in that area and we need to support them on every end," Aeiramique Glass Blake, Executive Director of Generation Justice said.Robertson said he was saved by the church when he was 12, "[I] grew up in an abusive alcoholic family in Maryland... went to this Baptist church and discovered a god who was a better parent than mine was." He said it's heartbreaking they can't help kids in similar situations.Blake said the community will show up to protect the church if they wish to keep their doors open next Tuesday night.Robertson said the city is working to find another place for the youth.Robertson said other groups are already planning benefits for Missiongathering and says he is touched by the outpouring of support. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The FBI said a bank robber who held up a US Bank in Rolando last week struck again Friday in La Mesa. Surveillance photos show a man entering the Wells Fargo Bank inside the Vons grocery store at 8011 University Ave. in La Mesa just before noon. The man pretended to talk on his phone before demanding money from the teller, agents said. He also threatened “to shoot” if he didn’t receive money, according to the FBI. After approaching the first counter, the man approached several tellers in an effort to get more cash, said investigators. The man spoke to tellers Aug. 15 during the US Bank robbery inside the Vons at 6155 El Cajon Blvd. “Grab a bag. Start with your 100s. Put all the money in the bag and give it to me or I'm gonna [sic] shoot,” the man said, according to agents. A helicopter searched the area near the Wells Fargo Friday afternoon but could not find the man. La Mesa Police said the man is 5’8”, in his mid-20s to early 30s, and has a tattoo of a cross on his forearm. Anyone with information about the robberies was asked to call the FBI. 1088

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The coronavirus pandemic has brought the historic Balboa Park Carousel to a halt. Still, it hasn't halted plans to upgrade the 100-year old attraction."We did make lemonade out of lemons here," says John Bolthouse, the Executive Director of the Friends of Balboa Park.The group started a capital campaign fundraiser three years ago, hoping to raise million to overhaul the carousel. When the coronavirus pandemic hit, they saw an opportunity in the closure."We did the best to take advantage of it," Bolthouse says. "People stepped up, and they saw that there was a need and an opportunity to get these things done."A fundraising push brought in 0,000 in 30 days, bringing the total amount raised to .4 million. With the extra cash on hand, the Friends of Balboa Park accelerated the schedule for remaking the ride.They've repainted several of the animals, restoring them to the original design. The group also rewired the entire carousel lighting system. That included changing over every bulb to safer energy-efficient LED bulbs.It also allowed them to bring back some light fixtures that had been removed for safety reasons."100 years ago carousels were burning down due to electrical fires," says Manager Bill Brown. "It's going to be a huge improvement. I think people are going to notice when we reopen."Brown hired a contractor to help with big projects. He also has a team of four people who help work on the carousel every Tuesday.One of the animals that Brown just finished painting is a Golden Retriever, which has a special meaning to one of the donors."We named the dog Goldie George," says Julie Cowan Novak. "Goldie in honor of my three-year-old granddaughter and George in honor of my hundred-year-old uncle."Cowan Novak's family donated ,000 to adopt the animal. She says seeing the work continue has been a silver lining to the Pandemic."I think the carousel is really a balance for what we've all gone through," says Cowan Novak. "It's just sort of a bright light."The Pandemic has also brought some challenges to the ride.The Friends of Balboa Park had to furlough most of their staff from the loss of ride revenue. They've also put bigger plans to revamp the carousel plaza on hold.Bolthouse also says he doesn't know when they'll be able to reopen. Like other theme parks and ride operators, the carousel is still waiting on the state and county to release guidelines for reopening.But, when they get the green light, they plan to have as much of the restoration work as possible finished."We did the best to take advantage of it," Bolthouse says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego is taking legal action against the owners, operator and property manager of a independent living facility with squalid living conditions.Ten people lived in the now-closed home on Ewing Street near San Diego State, most of them elderly. Photos from inside the home show mold on mattresses, rat feces, holes in the walls, and overflowing trash cans.The City Attorney's office says fumes from an illegally installed water heater contaminated the interior, and the conditions were so dirty that a man's foot had to be amputated after a sore got infected. RELATED: Residents complain of bedbugs at El Cajon independent living facility"The mattresses are filled with bed bugs, there are mice droppings, it's awful," City Attorney Mara Elliott said. Independent Living Facilities are unlicensed and unregulated. They are often a last chance for vulnerable people to avoid becoming homeless - paying rent with social security or disability checks. Elliott's office is suing the owners, property manager, and operator, who could be forced to pay up to million. Additionally, operator Mark Rogers is being charged with 22 misdemeanors. Rogers also owns an independent living facility in El Cajon, where a tenant was murdered with a frying pan late last year.
