SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County health officials say a dead Cooper's hawk found in Ramona has tested positive for West Nile Virus.The hawk is the second bird to test positive for the virus in San Diego County in 2019. Two county residents have also tested positive for the virus this year, but officials say both were bitten and contracted the virus in other counties. Across the state, 184 people have tested positive for the virus and five people have died this year.County health officials are now reminding the public to protect themselves from mosquitoes that may be carrying the potentially deadly virus.West Nile virus is mainly a bird disease but can be transmitted to humans via mosquitoes who feed off an infected animal. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As the weather across San Diego County warms, rattlesnakes are out if full force.Rattlesnakes live throughout Southern California and live in the deserts as well as along the coast, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The department says most bites happen from April to October when the snakes and people are most active outdoors. RELATED: Deadly backyard encounter could point to dangerous snake season“Snakes really get an unfair bad rap, when they actually play an important role in California’s ecosystems,” said CDFW’s Keep Me Wild program coordinator Lesa Johnston. The potential of running into a rattlesnake shouldn’t deter anyone from enjoying the great outdoors, the department adds. According to the California Poison Control System, the chances of being bitten are small when compared with the risk of other environmental injuries. Taking the time to learn about safety precautions before going outdoors can make all the difference,” Johnston added. The department says rattlesnakes generally aren’t aggressive and will likely retreat if given room and not provoked or threatened. “Most bites occur when a rattlesnake is handled or accidentally brushed against by someone walking or climbing,” the department says on their website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As the elderly population is told to stay home to protect themselves from coronavirus, a group like ElderHelp is necessary. ElderHelp has been helping seniors with anything from giving rides to grocery shopping for decades. Now, they have adapted to COVID-19 restrictions, with a system where volunteers pick up groceries from the nonprofit's hub, then drive the food and supplies to the seniors’ homes to deliver without contact.ElderHelp has seen a 773% increase in requests for service since the pandemic began and now completes 522 deliveries on average every week.Carol Greene is one of the seniors who has food delivered to her San Diego home and said the communication with the staff brightens her days.“I look at ElderHelp as all the sunshine. You might be at home on your normal, boring day at times and whoop there’s the phone,” she said.They just received a 0,000 grant from the San Diego Foundation but say they are still always in need of both donations and volunteers, especially in light of the recent increase in demand.Nicole Darling has been volunteering with ElderHelp since 2003 and said the seniors appreciate the food, but always seem to enjoy the interaction as well, especially during a time of isolation.“It’s a small amount of effort to make a huge amount of good for people who are really vulnerable and alone,” said Darling. 1382

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dawn Hendon knows a thing or two when it comes to the big day for couples, she was a wedding planner then became an officiant over the past 10 years."It's a happy business, I like to be around people for joyous occasions and weddings are always a happy event so I thought this is a happy thing, and today we need all the joy we can find," Hendon said.Recently, she's added a backyard chapel at her San Marcos home to her list of services. "I even have shoes, accessories, floral head pieces, boutonnieres for guys and tuxedos for men."Love Wedding Chapel is what she calls it and she was able to pull it off thanks to help with a grant from the San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce. At a time she said when people are supporting more black owned businesses amid the fight for racial injustice, "I’m glad people are looking to support black owned businesses. Sometimes we have a lot more challenges, our population isn’t so big in San Diego." And in the middle of a global pandemic, Hendon said, "I’ve lost family members with COVID this year and I thought finding our joy is important so it brings me joy, and I hope to bring joy to others."She said there was no better time than now to create the business of her dreams, "I thought if we could bring a little bit of that dream to them and bring them a nice environment then it’d make their day a little special."She received her Masters in Business Administration last year and said everything she's learned and accomplished has helped make this business happen. "Resilience, following through and executive management. I use all my skill sets, it all comes in handy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Connecting children, teens, and families to the power of reading has been the mission of San Diego nonprofit Words Alive for more than two decades.During this pandemic, they haven’t skipped a beat.“The San Diego community is so deeply invested in the importance of literacy and just how critical literacy and education are for the success of our students,” said Rachael Orose, Executive Director for Words Alive.Teaching kids reading and writing skills at a young age is key to that success. Orose said through Words Alive, teachers and volunteers are making sure all students have the opportunity and tools to learn through several different programs, including Read Aloud, Teen Services & Family Literacy.“All of the data tells us if we can make you a reader, your family will be a reader. The students who we serve are often in low-income neighborhoods; they’re wrestling with homelessness, hunger, poverty, violence,” she said.This year alone, Words Alive has received thousand of book donations through community partnerships, most recently on Wednesday.“We picked up just over 1,700 books thanks to a partnership with the San Diego Council on Literacy and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Those books are zero to 18, they’re headed to the Monarch School in the coming weeks,” she said.“With Words Alive, the books actually belong to the students, they’re able to write in them, they’re able to annotate them” said Jeffra Becknell, who teaches high school history at Monarch School, which serves students K-12 impacted by homelessness. “Having a physical book in their hand is such a wonderful feeling.”Becknell has been participating with Words Alive’s Adolescent Book Group program for ten years. “The Adolescent Book Group has been an amazing experience for my students and me; the volunteers come into the classroom, we read a book together, and then we have a book club discussion about it,” she said.During this pandemic, discussions have moved online, but the mission has remained the same.“We had our Adolescent Book Group online; we had it as a Zoom call. Clearly, it’s really different, but it was the same conversation,” said Becknell.Perhaps most importantly, Orose said Words Alive makes representation a priority.“The content reflects their lived experience, the characters look like the students we serve, the authors have similar experiences,” she said.Words Alive currently has more than 1,000 volunteers but is always looking for more.
