SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Escondido firefighter is being praised for a small act of kindness that impacted a 7-year-old in a big way.Last week the department was responding to palm trees on fire. That's when Craig Domingue, a fire engineer, noticed Eli walking with his mom. "We happened to be walking and spotted the fire truck. Eli kind of, his anxiety was kicking in," said Eli's mom, Monica Zamora. Eli is on the autism spectrum; loud noises and first responders give him anxiety. "I just went up to him and introduced myself and talked to him like I would talk to any person, and it was a really neat interaction," said Domingue.Domingue says he was able to recognize Eli was on the spectrum because his 10-year-old son is too. He was able to calm Eli down and thanked him for picking up trash."Eli at the time was out picking up trash, which is so neat that he's here doing something good for our community, just like all the other firefighters that are here doing good for the community," said Domingue. "We do go pick up trash a lot, but it's not often people acknowledge him and thank him for what he's doing," said Zamora. Zamora shared the positive interaction on Facebook, and over 1,000 people have reacted to the post. Many have since messaged Zamora, thanking Eli for all he does in the community. 1316

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A stranger helped a woman through a flight from San Diego to Nashville in a random act of kindness caught on camera. Megan Schofield was on the Southwest plane and told 10News what she noticed. The flight had just started to take off when Schofield saw an elderly woman tightly clutching a young man’s arm. “Upon take-off, she mentioned she hadn't flown in 15 years and she was scared, and she said to the gentleman “Take my hand”, and he grabbed her hand,” Schofield said. Schofield discovered the woman was 96 years old and flying to celebrate her birthday with family across the country. “Seeing that, I told the gentleman I would want somebody to treat my grandmother the way you treated her.” Schofield posted the moment on Facebook, where it went viral. “Sometimes we're just so caught up in the hustle and bustle that we don't always see who needs help.” The man in the photo, identified only as Ben, emailed Schofield, saying he was happy such a simple moment could be so important to so many people. Schofield was inspired to pay it forward. “Yesterday on my flight home, a lady about the age of my mom… I could tell she was a little bit worried. She said “I don't fly, I drive” so I walked her to her gate and she gave me a big hug.” The elderly woman who received help from the young man is named Virginia, but we don’t know her exact identity. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After nearly two decades of delays and setbacks, San Ysidro community members celebrated the completion of a million major road reconstruction project Monday.For years the half-mile stretch of Old Otay Mesa Road in between San Ysidro High and San Ysidro Middle Schools lacked many safety features to protect the students who walk to and from school.An unfinished dirt path was used as a sidewalk with no fence to keep students away from oncoming vehicle traffic, no street lights or proper signage and no barriers to keep pedestrians from slipping down a steep canyon.After three years, the stretch of road now includes the safety features the community had been asking for for years. The roadway was widened and realigned, sidewalks and bike lanes were added, there's now a retaining wall, signage and lighting.The City of San Diego says the project took so long to complete after the initial groundbreaking because of the rough terrain crews had to work through.San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced reforms to overhaul the City’s infrastructure program back in 2015. He says that increased funding each year and helped speed up high priority projects, like the one on Old Otay Mesa Road. This project was one of more than 60 neighborhood projects that were fully funded after Faulconer’s reforms went into effect."Parents have a peace of mind knowing that their kids have a safe path to and from school," said Faulconer at a news conference Monday.The half-mile stretch of Old Otay Mesa Road, which was closed off to traffic for several years, officially reopened on Monday. 1612

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A school district superintendent and a Native American reservation leader in North County are speaking out against the proposed placement of a sexually violent predator. On Thursday, there were strong reactions from those who are close to North County's Pauma Valley home where sexually violent predator Joshua Cooley could soon be placed. “When people like this are placed by our borders, it's very concerning,” Temet Aguilar, the Chairman of the Pauma Band of Mission Indians, said Thursday. Aguilar is encouraging the hundreds of families on and near the reservation to speak out against the placement of 40-year-old Cooley, whose victims were 12-years-old.“They think this is an area that's rural and there's nobody out here but actually it's more dangerous. Predators can hide out here. We have a tremendous amount of agriculture. We have rural lands,” he added.Valley Center-Pauma Unified School District Superintendent Ron McCowan told ABC10 News they'll write letters if they have to to make sure they're voices on the matter is heard. “We'll write the letters if we have to. We'll show up at the court hearing if we have to," McCowan said. “We'll make every effort we can. We'll work alongside our local officials and make sure that our voice for our community is heard and make sure they understand the risk that they're putting our young children in.”This Tuesday, DA Summer Stephan sent a letter to the Department of State Hospitals, urging the Department to find a different place for Cooley, who's from Northern California, not San Diego. He has no local connections.It's unclear why the Department is seeking his housing in San Diego.Next month, a Humboldt County judge will consider a request from the Department to place him in Pauma.If granted, it would mark the first time that such a predator from outside San Diego would be placed in our county.DA Stephan has called the move reckless and irresponsible. She said that in July, a San Diego judge struck down a request to place 75-year-old sexually violent predator Joseph Bocklett in the same Pauma home.According to an ABC station in Northern California, Cooley’s been denied placement in at least four different areas in and near Humboldt.The Department of State Hospitals will not confirm any information about Cooley, citing privacy concerns. A Humboldt County court official called ABC10 News on Thursday to say the Court would not comment.On Oct. 9, at 8:30 a.m., a hearing on Cooley's placement will be available for viewing at https://www.humboldt.courts.ca.gov/.Those interested in submitting a public comment for the hearing can do so between Sept. 15-23. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman is dead after a shooting in the Skyline area, Saturday afternoon. San Diego Police detectives said around 5:30 pm, two cars were traveling northbound on Meadowbrook Drive. Both drivers stopped at the red light at Skyline Drive. Then, the passengers got into an argument. "Our victim got out of the second vehicle and approached the front vehicle on the passenger side," Homicide Lt. Matt Dobbs said. "Witnesses heard a gunshot and saw the female stumble away."</p>VIDEO REPORT: Man pleads not guilty in Skyline road-rage slaying of young momResponding officers found the 27-year-old woman, later identified as Sylvanita Widman, suffering from a gunshot wound. The shooter drove off. “She was transported by paramedics to a local hospital," Lt. Dobbs said. "Unfortunately, she died at around 6:28 this evening.”Investigators said Widman's driver was cooperative. Meanwhile, the motive of the shooting remains unknown. Police describe the shooter as a Black man in his 20's, driving a black Mercedes Benz. He is considered armed and dangerous.Friends of Widman told 10News, she was a talented singer and dancer, and a loving mother of two young children.  1239
