YANGON, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar is projecting to build the first-ever liver transplant hospital in line with the international standard, the local weekly Voice reported Sunday.With the technological help of the Changi General Hospital of Singapore, a 40-million-U.S dollar worth private hospital has started building since late last month.The hospital will offer services for the patients living with heart and kidney diseases and for protection from being affected Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA), the report said.In Myanmar, liver transplant will cost about 20 million Kyats ( 25,000 U.S. dollars), lesser than other countries, the report added.Myanmar experts carried out successful liver-transplant operation in 2004 for the first time and in 2009 for the second time.

THE HAGUE, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- ESBL-enzymes, which are known for their ability to stop the effects of antibiotics, can directly pass from chicken to people, said a research published on Tuesday.Veterinary researcher Dik Mevius of the Wageningen University released the finding in the magazine Resource.The research group led by Mevius has isolated six ESBL-genes varieties and compared them to bacteria found on hospital patients, on super market poultry and in laying batteries. In 35 percent of all cases, they discovered a match of 100 percent.Bacteria like Klebsiella on E. coli can produce the ESBL-enzymes. A healthy person will not feel any effect, but people with a lower immune system can get very sick. In areas like a hospital, the infection can easily spread."The main concern is that the enzyme resists the most used antibiotics, which makes the treatment of infected persons difficult," said Mevius.According to Mevius, 94 percent of supermarket poultry carries the enzyme, but all enzymes will be killed during the heating process of cooking.

BEIJING, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Medicine prices at public clinics have been notably reduced thanks to a policy that promotes basic medicine, an office of the State Council said Thursday.Current price levels of basic medicine used by government-funded township hospitals and community clinics have been reduced an average of 25 percent from the levels two years ago when the policy started, according to a statement from the State Council office in charge of reforming the country's healthcare program.China has introduced a state list of basic medicine used by government-funded township hospitals and community clinics, which includes roughly 300 types of commonly-used Western and traditional Chinese medicine.Provincial governments will purchase basic medicine through public bidding and distribute them to local clinics.These clinics must not raise the prices of listed medicine and in return, the government will provide them with subsidies.The policy has been implemented at all township and community clinics in all the 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in the Chinese mainland, the statement said. 

WASHINGTON, May 30 (Xinhua) -- After nearly 12 days together in orbit, U.S. space shuttle Endeavour undocked from the International Space Station on Sunday night, NASA announced on Monday.According to NASA, the undocking took place at 11:55 p.m. EDT ( 0355 GMT Monday) as the spacecraft sailed 215 miles (346 km) above Bolivia.Pilot Greg Johnson, at the aft flight deck controls, flew Endeavour in a circle around the station at distances of about 450 to 650 feet. LOS ANGELES, June 8 (Xinhua) -- NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity is heading toward "Spirit Point" on the rim of a large crater, a long-term destination that the rover has been trying to reach for nearly three years, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) announced on Wednesday.Opportunity has moved toward the crater, Endeavour, since climbing out of Victoria crater in August 2008.Having driven 11 miles (18 kilometers), the rover has about two miles (about three kilometers) to go before reaching the rim of Endeavour, said JPL in Pasadena, Los Angeles.Rover team members last week selected "Spirit Point" as the informal name for the site on the rim where Opportunity will arrive at Endeavour crater. The choice commemorates Opportunity's rover twin, Spirit, which has ended communication and finished its mission."Spirit achieved far more than we ever could have hoped when we designed her," said Steve Squyres of Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, principal investigator for the rovers. "This name will be a reminder that we need to keep pushing as hard as we can to make new discoveries with Opportunity. The exploration of Spirit Point is the next major goal for us to strive for."Endeavour offers the setting for plenty of productive work by Opportunity. The crater is 14 miles (22 kilometers) in diameter -- more than 20 times wider than Victoria crater, which Opportunity examined for two years. Orbital observations indicate that the ridges along its western rim expose rock outcrops older than any Opportunity has seen so far. Spirit Point is at the southern tip of one of those ridges, "Cape York," on the western side of Endeavour.Opportunity and Spirit completed their three-month prime missions on Mars in April 2004. Both rovers continued for years of bonus, extended missions. Both have made important discoveries about wet environments on ancient Mars that may have been favorable for supporting microbial life.NASA's JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Mars Exploration Rover Project for the NASA Science Mission Directorate, Washington.
