Last night, we felt sorrow when the whole village gathered to have our last dinner in our hometown together," a villager surnamed Wang said.The government paid the dinner and organized a troupe of gong and drum players to cheer up the villagers.Their journey was the starting point for the nation's largest relocation program after that of the Three Gorges Hydro-Power Project, which involved the relocation of 1.27 million.The relocation for the building of the central route of the SNWD by 2014 will involve 330,000 residents - 180,000 in Hubei and 150,000 in neighboring Henan Province.The project is designed to take water from a section of China's largest river, the Yangtze, to satisfy demand in the north China's drought-prone megacities - Beijing and Tianjin.According to the government, from Wednesday until September 30, about 60,000 people will be relocated.At the farewell scene, a fleet of 15 coaches carried the villagers while 34 trucks loaded with the villagers' belongings was followed by a number of ambulances with the village's elderly, unwell and pregnant."We may set a record in terms of speed of relocation -- 60,000 people within 50 days. We want to do it fast so we can finish it before the rainy season hits," said Zeng Wenhua, mayor of Danjiangkou City.

BEIJING, July 26 (Xinhua) -- The Ministry of Health on Monday publicized a draft revision of the national standard of iodine content in edible salt, in which it stated the upper limit should be lowered by half.The average iodine content would be reduced to between 20-30 mg per kg of edible salt, from the current 20-60 mg, according to the draft.Iodine intake was "excessive" in five provinces and "above normal" in 16 other provinces, although the national level was "acceptable," the ministry said Monday in a statement explaining the revisions.Members of the public are invited to make submissions on the draft revision to the ministry via fax and email before Sept. 12.The ministry said earlier this month iodized salt was still essential in China as benefits of it still outweighed the negatives, citing the results of a nationwide risk assessment on iodine intake.The assessment was carried out in response to claims by media and medical experts that people in some regions, coastal areas in particular, were taking in excessive amounts of iodine.Since 1996, iodine has been added in salt across the country because in most parts of the country, the average diet is iodine deficient.Both iodine deficiency and excessive intake can lead to thyroid diseases.

BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Housing prices in major Chinese cities rose 11.4 percent year on year in June, one percentage point lower than the increase in May, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Monday.This was the second consecutive month that China's property prices grew at a slower pace. Property prices in the 70 large and medium-sized cities grew 12.4 percent in May, 0.4 percentage points lower than that of April.On a monthly basis, June property prices in these cities fell 0.1 percent compared to the month before, the NBS said.New home prices rose 14.1 percent year on year in June, down one percentage point from May. CHANGZHOU, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Saturday called for more favorable policies to encourage the construction of affordable housing.Li made the remarks at a meeting on affordable housing held in Changzhou city of east China's Jiangsu Province.He reiterated that China would complete construction of 5.8 million units of affordable housing, including low-rent housing, public rental housing and resettlement housing for relocated residents from redeveloped urban shanty towns.In May, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development signed an agreement with local governments nationwide to build 5.8 million units of affordable housing."Meanwhile, measures should be taken to increase the supply of commercial housing to meet people's reasonable needs of housing consumption," he said.He said local governments should adopt a realistic approach to affordable housing construction and plans should be based upon local needs.For populous cities, construction should focus on public rental housing that provides homes for low- and medium-income families, newly-employed school graduates and migrant workers, he said.
