SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A pair of protests collided in front of State Sen. Toni Atkins' downtown San Diego office Friday morning, and joined forces to call for help.Members from the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment gathered to tell Atkins to support Assembly Bill 1436, which would extend the eviction moratorium until April 1, 2021. They say it's the only way to protect people who haven't been able to pay rent because of the coronavirus pandemic.Meanwhile, a car rally organized by UDW/AFSCME Local 3930 demanded a new tax on California billionaires to help pay for child care and shore up holes in the state's education budget.The groups were unaware of each other's planned protests until they both showed up at Atkins' office at the same time. But they say their combined voices should help get her attention."This tax would help those families who need quality childcare, affordable childcare, so we are supporting the children," said Miren Algorri, a child care provider who supports the tax. "This is not about the rich, this is about the children, the future, not only of this community, but of California, the nation.""We need protection," said Patricia Mendoza, a mother of two who faces eviction if the current moratorium runs out. "Where are we going to go? What's going to happen to me, what's going to happen to my future? I don't want to have to tell my kids we're going to be homeless. And I don't think any mother, or any parent would like to tell their kids we're going to be homeless."Atkins has already written a bill that would allow landlords and tenants to work out a payment plan for back rent, to be paid between 2024 and 2034. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new study released Wednesday by a University of California San Diego professor is making claims about inhumane treatment of asylum seekers in detention centers along the border."Over 1 out of every 3, or 34.7%, of the asylum-seeking heads of households reported issues related to conditions in immigration detention, treatment in detention, or medical issues," the report headed by Tom K. Wong, PhD, said. He is an Associate Professor of Political Science at UC San Diego.The study was conducted from October 2018 through June of 2019, with 7,300 migrants.Here are some of the findings:Among those who reported issues in immigration detention, 61.8% reported issues related to food and water, including being fed frozen or spoiled food, not having enough to eat, not being given formula for infants, not being given water, and having to drink dirty water, among others;Among those who reported issues in immigration detention, 34.5% reported issues related to hygiene, including not being able to shower, dirty bathrooms, and not having a toothbrush or toothpaste to brush their teeth, among others;Among those who reported issues in immigration detention, 45.6% reported issues related to not being able to sleep, overcrowded conditions, confinement, and the temperature being too cold in la hielera (ice box);232 asylum-seeking heads of households reported verbal abuse, including being told “go back to your f****** country” and “you’re an ape,” among other examples;40 asylum-seeking heads of households reported physical abuse, including being thrown against a wall, among other examples; and18 asylum-seeking heads of households reported having their physical property taken, including their passports and travel documents, among other examplesCustoms and Border Protection's Transport, Escort, Detention and Search (TEDS) Directive is outlined as follows:"Regular hold room checks should be conducted and recorded to ensure proper occupancy levels, safety, hygiene, and the availability of drinking water. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local doctor says even though a COVID-19 vaccine will be available soon, it will still be several months before we see the impact.Dr. Mark Sawyer, an infectious disease specialist at Rady Children’s Hospital, is on the State Advisory Board that reviews COVID-19 vaccines. He spoke to ABC 10News about the importance of getting this vaccine.“The vaccine is safe, and it works, and we absolutely need this vaccine to deal with the pandemic,” Sawyer said.However, Sawyer added a warning: “If people suddenly think that we’re out of the woods now, and stop wearing masks and distancing from each other, then we’re going to still see the kinds of numbers that we’re seeing right now.”Despite intense discussions among the FDA advisory panel regarding whether Pfizer’s vaccine is safe to use on 16- and 17-year-olds, Sawyer points to the research that was done, saying the drug was tested on individuals from that age group.“There’s no reason to think that a 16-year-old or 17-year-old is going to have a reaction that an 18-year-old is going to have. I think it’s perfectly safe,” Sawyer told ABC 10News.Sawyer also described the side effects one may feel after getting the vaccine. Sawyer said a recipient’s arm may hurt and he or she may feel under the weather. The symptoms can last up to 24 hours after you get the vaccine, but Sawyer said, “There’s no long-term consequences.”As San Diego waits for the county to announce their vaccination plan, informing people when and where they can get it, Sawyer said the bottom line is “everyone can feel comfortable in going out to get the vaccine when it’s their turn.” 1641
