Arnold Kee has always pushed his two sons to do well in school. Then, an email he received from their high school last year alarmed him. It alerted parents about high levels of lead found in the water. “Fortunately, they've both done well, but it's the type of thing that makes you wonder would they have performed even better had they not been exposed to whatever lead was in the system,” Kee says. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), even low levels of lead can cause behavior and learning problems, including lower IQ scores. The school replaced water fountains and installed filters at the school designed to reduce lead. “What I like is the idea of the school being proactive and trying to address it, but then also the city itself trying to address it, because I do think it takes more than the just the city to be on top of what's happening,” Kee says. Washington, D.C. law now requires filters to be put on water fountains at schools, daycares and even at parks. However, D.C.’s efforts are the exception. An alarming report by Environment America found most schools are not doing enough to protect students from drinking water contaminated with lead. “We see pervasive contamination of drinking water at schools and pre-schools across the country,” says John Rumpler, co-author of the report.The report looked at states across the country and found most received failing grades. Millions of children are being exposed to lead from contaminated pipes and drinking fountains. “If your kid’s school was built before 2014, chances are the pipes, the plumbing, the fountains, the faucets have significant amounts of lead in them and those faucets and fountains should be replaced and filters should be put on,” Rumpler says.Rumpler urges parents to pressure their schools and lawmakers to make those changes. She says the calling to create came to her in a dream."Something woke me up and it was like September 3rd, on your way home, out of your name into your color," she described. So Karen says she wrote down the dream in her phone. "One one of the things I thought about is how can I help others with my art ," said Freidt.After battling pneumonia and being confined to her home during COVID-19 she whipped up a few the tasty treats and posted the edible art on Facebook."The first two pies I posted on Facbeook went viral within a couple days," she said. Within a few days her creative crusts grabbed the attention of Anna Sui, one of New York City's most recognized fashion designers."First thing I said, was how can I confirm this is really you," she stated. "I found out she wanted to use the pies in New York Spring Fashion Week."It took Freidt more than 15 hours to make the pie fashions now garnering national attention."She used the pies prominently in her media, I was shocked," she said. But Freidt hasn't forgotten those here at home. After several bargain bin attempts to revive Crash during the last two decades, developer Toys For Bob has taken the reins and found a way to properly bring back the bandicoot.Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time retains what I love about this franchise: loveable imperfections. Like the originals, this game presents increasingly challenging platforming scenarios that cause equal parts laughter and frustration.The confusion about how I mistimed a jump or how an enemy bested me constantly made me wonder if it was my fault or fault of the game’s design, and in an odd way, I respect the franchise for establishing that type of confusion, whether it be intentional or not. By default, Crash 4 is more polished than those games from the 90’s, but the lovable imperfections remain at its heart. I lost interest pretty quickly, but the anticipation of another level helped me see it through until credits rolled, plus the game has a skip cutscene button which was much appreciated. Its commitment to detail and overall creativity has brought breathed new life into the series in a way that caught me, and I expect many gamers off guard.
