La Bella Pizza Garden is one such mom and pop shop.10News anchor Kimberly Hunt stopped by this 1950s pizza parlor, now run by Tony Raso.“I used to roll pizza and make meatballs in the 70s”, says Raso.Raso proudly displays photos of his mother and father, who opened the restaurant almost 60 years ago.“That's his delivery vehicle in the 50s. They enjoy our classic pizza. It's never changed," said Raso. “We make meatballs, spaghetti, lasagna. They've been cooking all day.”La Bella Pizza Garden now has three generations of family history. Raso’s son Michael works alongside his father. He will eventually take over the business. He says their customers are family too. “When I'm working up front, they come in and say my grandparents came here, we come here, our kids come here, You can't stop that, you've got to keep it going," said Michael Raso. (KGTV) -- The Chula Vista Police Department is investigating a series of suspicious fires over the weekend.According to the department, the activity began on September 17, when a series of fires broke out in East Chula Vista. Crews were called to the fires beginning at 3:30 a.m.The department says four separate fires sparked within a 30-minute window on Lake Crest Drive, Eastlake Parkway, Telegraph Canyon Road, and East J Street.RELATED: Fire scorches Chula Vista playground overnightOn September 19, a fire erupted at a Veterans Park playground. Video from the scene showed the raging blaze and an explosion at the playground. Fire officials are investigating the fire at the Veterans Park Community Center as suspicious.Police are also investigating a fire that started on September 20 on the 1300 block of Martin Place. (KGTV) - More than a dozen people were forced out their homes late Tuesday night after a driver crashed her car into a fire hydrant at an apartment complex in Chula Vista, causing water to be sent nearly 30 feet into the air.At around 11:45 p.m., Chula Vista police responded to reports of a geyser spewing water into the air on 3rd Avenue.The geyser, from a broken fire hydrant, flooded a nearby apartment complex, forcing the evacuation of 16 people from six units, four of which were heavily flooded.A black car that struck the hydrant tried to leave just after the wreck, but the car's female driver eventually came back to speak with officers. Police questioned the young driver, but she was released.City crews spent a few hours helping clear the water from the apartments. 807

(KGTV) - A South Bay public official is doubling down on anti-Muslim comments as he prepares a campaign to become Chula Vista's mayor.Hector Gastelum resisted calls to resign from the Otay District Water Board in 2017 after his tweets referred to Muslims as sub-human scum. He just qualified for the June run-off to become the Mayor of Chula Vista, the county's second largest city.In an interview, Gastelum said he isn't backing down from his prior controversial comments. "How can you not condemn rape? How can you not condemn pedophilia? Or throwing gays from the roof," Gastelum said, clarifying he is not referring to all Muslims. "If people don't like what I stand for, they can vote for the person that's going to take more taxes from them."Hanif Mohebi, who runs the San Diego chapter of the Council of American Islamic Relations, called Gastelum's comments bigoted and hateful."Are we referring to other criminals by their religion?" he said. "(Charleston church shooter) Dylan Roof and many others. Are we referring to others by their religion? If not, then why are we singling out this community and referring to them by their religion."Gastelum is running against Incumbent Mary Salas, teacher Arthur Kende, and Parks Supervisor Daniel Schreck for the seat. The top two vote-getters in June move on to a November runoff. Gastelum's campaign statement has no anti-Muslim comments. (KGTV) - A documentary filmmaker is focusing his lens on migrants in Tijuana, hoping to show what life is like for migrants waiting to enter the U.S."Stuck in Tijuana" shows the crisis around the migrant shelters, where filmmaker Charlie Minn says he found a humanitarian crisis."I think we've all been there in life, at one point or another where we ask for something, a job, a relationship, a school, a career," Minn says. "The migrants are asking for acceptance."Minn says he found one shelter where 1,000 people were sharing one bathroom. In other areas he found children living without their parents.He adds that Tijuana's new reputation as the murder capital of the world makes things even more dangerous for migrants in the shelters.Minn spent the last week visiting college classes around San Diego to show the documentary to students. He hopes to inspire them to fight for change.This is Minn's third documentary focused on the San Diego/Tijuana border region. His first one, "Mexico's Bravest Man," profiled a police chief in Tijuana who survivied eight assasination attempts. The next movie, "77 Minutes," examined the 1984 shooting massacre in a San Ysidro McDonald's.Minn says he's captivated by the border in this area, because it's unlike any other region in the US.The movie will premiere Friday, March 22nd at the Theater Box in downtown San Diego.
