San Diego State University on Thursday detailed a 0 million plan to avoid the massive flooding that has engulfed the Mission Valley Stadium site, which it plans to turn into a West Campus. The current stadium sits on a 166-acre site that is largely sloped, causing runoff from the nearby San Diego River and Murphy Canyon Creek to pool. In 2010, the flooding got so bad that it went onto the field and threatened the Holiday Bowl football game. Voters in November approved the SDSU West measure, paving the way for the university to turn the site into a Mission Valley campus with a smaller football stadium and a river park. The project is currently going through the environmental process. "It started out as a technical problem and it became kind of a foundation of our design and our vision," said Laura Shinn, SDSU's director of planning. SDSU presented its plan to mitigate the flooding to the city's environmental committee Thursday. The idea is to turn most of the sloping site into an elevated, flat area for the campus and stadium. Riders on the balloon held on tight during the gusty landing. “There were some points where the basket was almost tipped completely sideways,” says Jordan Lapidot, who was visiting the park with her family yesterday afternoon. “I have this image in my mind of this guy, and he’s grabbing the outside of the cage as they get just thrown.”The San Diego Zoo Safari Park says the balloon has a long cable in the middle of the cage that safely brings it down from the sky. That cable never broke during the windy ride. “They were trying to get it down as quickly as possible,” says Lapidot. The Safari Park tells 10News if the wind reads over 29 miles per hour they will shut the ride down. They sent us a statement about the incident, saying in part: “As the sudden storm arrived and winds picked up, some operations at the Park, like Balloon Safari and Flightline were closed to public use.”No one was hurt while on the ride. 1090

SAN DIEGO, California — Dozens of voters were left off the roster at a San Diego County polling place on Election Day, leading to frustration and delays.The problem was reported Tuesday morning at Pacific Trails Middle School at 5975 Village Center Loop Road in Carmel Valley.Poll workers received an incomplete roster which omitted 46 names, Registrar of Voters Michael Vu confirmed. The list was missing two and a half pages.Voters waited for voting officials to reprint another roster and deliver it to the polling place.Officials tried to ease the long line by calling the Registrar of Voters and getting approval for each person over the phone, a voter told KGTV television station.Voters also had the option of voting provisionally, but many of them declined, telling KGTV they wanted their votes to count. Provisional voting requires extra processing time to verify residences and identities.The San Diego Superior Court announced Monday it would have a judicial officer on hand to deal with any possible election-related issues, including registration, denial of registration of voters, certification or denial of certification of candidates or the certification or denial of certification of ballot measures.Voters were encouraged to contact the Registrar of Voters at 858-565-5800 with any concerns. 1337

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Thousands of people got their vaccinations Saturday, to kick off this year's flu season. The vaccination event was held at four Kaiser Permanente locations in San Diego County.For Byron Frohm, a trip to Kaiser Permanente in Mid-September is an annual tradition. "I can't think of any reason not to get it," Frohm said. The reason he does get the flu shot is his perfect, 40-year flu-free record. He says the vaccinations help him ward off the dangerous bug. "This virus is very strong," Shreya Chandra, MD. said. "It is hitting our community, and getting the vaccination really is prevention."Last season, health officials recorded 77 deaths in San Diego County. In the 2017-2018 season, there were 343 deaths. This was the highest number of fatalities since the county began tracking flu data nearly two decades ago. Already this year, there has been one confirmed flu-related death. The county said a 74-year-old Chula Vista man died August 15, 2019, due to complications from Influenza B. All the more reason for 76-year-old Frohm to stick to his regimen. "At my age, I'm probably more susceptible," Frohm said. Other high-risk groups include pregnant women, people with asthma, diabetes, and other illnesses. Some symptoms of Influenza include high fever, severe body aches, nausea, sore throat, and fatigue. This could last up to two weeks. Many people mistake the signs to that of the common cold. Doctors say many people who have the flu do not show any symptoms. But they can still spread the illness."I can still carry it and pass it on to elderly parents or people who can potentially get really sick from this virus," Dr. Chandra said. That is why Dr. Chandra strongly recommends the annual vaccine. She believes the best treatment is prevention. "We have State-of-the-art care and medicine. We live in San Diego. But with Toys R Us no longer in the picture, retailers are finding unique ways to cash in on the billion-dollar industry. Kids will always be drawn to play and make-believe. But for parents, it’s about helping Santa get the deals.“He loves to jump. He loves to run," Chedna Patin said. "So I think this will be a great play station for my baby,” she said while pointing at a piano toy.Patin said this year, she and her husband are buying their son’s holiday toys at a big box store.“Sam’s Club is majorly for groceries, buying bulk. But now as they are increasing their toy collection, I think for parents, it’s a good thing," Patin said. In fact, her one-year-old son Viann’s entire nursery came out of a Toys R Us catalog.
