SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) – It’s one of the most widely prescribed antibiotics in the country. It's called Cipro and the side effects could lead to your death. Experts are now calling for tighter controls on these prescriptions to protect the public.Team 10 investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner spoke to former Cipro users in San Diego who say they hit rock bottom after taking the medication.“I felt like I was in the pit of hell,” says Annie Spackman from Chula Vista. She describes it as the darkest time of her life. “I didn't know how much more I could handle,” she adds. After taking the antibiotic Cipro, she tells us, “My knees, my ankles [and] my feet [were in] pain. Just shooting pain.”“[I had] burning sensations in my muscles, my joints, my tendons [and] my ligaments,” says Tom Ingoglia, who lives in Pacific Beach. He says his health also spiraled after taking Cipro. “I had pain throughout my body,” he adds.Spackman says she suffered from panic attacks, brain fog and depression. “You feel lonely [and] helpless,” she tells us.She says with faith, she pulled through. Yet, Florence Summers says her daughter, Deana, did not. “She parked her car on the side of the interstate and walked in front of a semi,” she cries.Her family blames Deana's suicide on side effects from Cipro, which she began taking just four months before her death. "It was not her. She would have never, ever, ever done something like that," adds Summers.Cipro is one of the brand names for a class of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones. Another brand name is Levaquin.Since 2015, the FDA has recognized a syndrome related to taking these drugs. It's called fluoroquinolone-associated disability. The FDA added black box warnings to these drugs, citing disabling and potentially irreversible side effects, including suicidal thoughts. However, some experts say that no one is reading that warning, buried in a medication insert.“We have suicides after 1 or 2 days of antibiotics,” says Dr. Charles Bennett. He’s a nationally recognized medication safety expert and says it's a big problem. “The risks outweigh the benefits,” he adds.A review of the FDA’s data shows more than 20,000 reports of psychiatric side effects, like anxiety and depression and 174 suicides connected to these antibiotics since 1998. Doctors in the U.S. wrote 29.7 million prescriptions for these drugs in 2016 alone, according to the CDC.Dr. Bennett has filed a petition with the FDA, asking that doctors who prescribe this medicine get patients to sign a release that they understand the risks before taking the drugs.The FDA told us it is reviewing Dr. Bennett's request for a new warning, adding, "It is important that health care providers and patients are aware of both the risks and benefits of fluoroquinolones."We reached out to Bayer which makes Cipro. The drug maker sent the following statement.“The health and safety of patients who use Bayer products is our top priority, and Bayer expresses its sympathies to the family of [Deana].Cipro? (ciprofloxacin) is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, an important class of medications that treat a wide range of bacterial infections, many of which are serious and can be life-threatening. All medicines have potential side effects and the risks are communicated to physicians and patients in FDA-approved product labeling. The Cipro label contains FDA-approved language advising physicians and their patients about the potential side effects associated with the use of this therapy, including specific warnings about the risks of central nervous system and other psychiatric effects.The safety and efficacy of Bayer’s fluoroquinolones have been demonstrated in clinical trials involving more than 90,000 patients and extensive clinical experience in more than 800 million patients. Cipro was originally approved by the FDA in 1987 and is now widely available as a generic medication that is manufactured and supplied widely throughout the United States by several companies.Bayer closely monitors the safety and efficacy of its fluoroquinolones on an ongoing basis, as we do with all of our products. As with any prescription medication, Bayer encourages patients to discuss the risks and benefits of these medications with their healthcare provider.”The drug maker Janssen is no longer making Levaquin, but the drug is still available in generic form.Spackman adds, “Something more has to be done to let people know the extreme side effects it can have on you.” 4489

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- As we get into the heart of fire season, there are big concerns for neighbors who live along a former golf course. The old Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club is full of dried brush. Neighbors say they are worried the owner is letting the property become a fire hazard. Chain linked fences block off the entrances to the now-shuttered golf course. "It's looking pretty rough," says neighbor Jeffery Acogido. He's been living in his Carmel Mountain Ranch home for almost 30 years. "The course was actually here before the residences."The brush from the site comes right up to neighbors backyards. As we continue to see, warmer weather neighbors say the unwanted vegetation is becoming a fire hazard. "The community is really concerned that it's just going to be a matter of time that something unfortunate might happen."There have been talks of developing the land. 10News made calls to speak with the owner about the neighbor's concerns but haven't heard back. A Development company tells 10News it is working on a plan for new homes on the property. 1076

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- An appeals court today overturned a ruling that would have allowed the conditional release of the “Bolder Than Most” rapist, Alvin Quarles. The ruling was issued by the 4th District Court of Appeals Monday. The court said, in part that “Quarles is a serial rapist whose crimes were shockingly brutal and destructive. If he fails after he is conditionally released, considering his past, we shudder to contemplate the consequences of such a failure.”After news broke of the reversal, Dianne Jacob, who serves on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors and has been adamantly against the release, spoke out on Twitter. We must continue to fight the placement of sexually violent predators into our communities,” Jacob said in part. The ruling comes after San Diego County Superior Court Judge David M. Gill's decision to release Quarles to a home somewhere in San Diego County. After his release, he would have undergone treatment through a conditional release program.Gill's ruling followed a series of closed-door hearings that involved testimony from psychiatrists and other experts. Quarles was dubbed the "Bolder Than Most" rapist due to the way he attacked his victims at knifepoint, sometimes forcing the women's husbands or boyfriends to watch. In 1989, he pleaded guilty to committing over a dozen sexual assaults in the mid-to-late 1980s. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison. And the millions of newly unemployed Americans are vying for fewer jobs.Christy Schmidt, a 34-year-old who lives in Bend, Oregon, has been scouring job boards ever since she was let go by her employer. "The amount of jobs up there or jobs that are very close to a fit for me are just non-existent, and I have come to realize that there are tons of other wonderful qualified people applying for the exact same jobs I am," said Schmidt.She was working as an executive assistant for three vice presidents at Navis, a company that specializes in technology for the hospitality industry. Some of their biggest clients include hotels and resorts."It was literally my dream job. It was the best company culture I had ever been a part of, just some of the most brilliant people that were just so down to earth. I loved going to work every single day," said Schmidt. Schmidt thought working from home would be temporary, just during COVID-19, until the day managers called an all-team meeting."And it was very tough for them to tell us we no longer had jobs, that they were doing everything they could to make the company survive," said Schmidt.After months of searching, she finally found an opportunity that made her hopeful, only to learn it was a scam. When it came time for the virtual interview, the scammer instead wanted to have a text conversation over Google Hangouts. "All they want is personal information; they did not want to know anything about my experience or background," said Schmidt. The FBI says hiring scams have spiked during the pandemic.Now, Schmidt is considering moving out of the small town of Bend to go back home to California, where there are more jobs available. "Maybe I need to relocate myself just to be able to survive right now," said Schmidt. Tim Best, CEO of Bradley-Morris RecruitMilitary, says Schmidt is far from alone. "This isn't going away, so it's not even about, well this is what I need to do now. No, this is a competency we all need to develop because this is here to stay at some level," said Best. The Army veteran has spent the last two decades helping military veterans and their spouses find careers through massive job fairs at venues like Yankee Stadium.Now, they're going virtual."Really, no one understands what a virtual career fair is until they experience it," said Best. Employers market their brand in virtual chat rooms, which can lead to a video interview on the spot.While some sectors, like hospitality and tourism, will likely be slow to come back, essential jobs like delivery drivers are in demand. As well as IT, tech, customer service, online teaching, and construction jobs."I've seen this before in previous recessions, where people do rethink their career paths," said Best. The San Diego Workforce Partnership is offering on-demand training videos online. They're also connecting job seekers with affordable certificate programs to help people learn new skills. Workforce development partners in other cities are offering similar resources. Schmidt is broadening her search, considering jobs she might have overlooked before the pandemic."Knock on every single door because I know eventually one is going to open, and it's going to be the right fit for you," said Schmidt.
