BEIJING, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao on Friday visited Xiamen, a southeastern port city which faces Taiwan across the sea, urging cooperation for a win-win result for the mainland and Taiwan.     With more than 3,300 Taiwan-invested companies, Xiamen, in Fujian Province, is a frontier platform for cross-Straits exchanges.     While touring Chenhong Technology Company, Wen was pleased to learn the Taiwan-invested high-tech company registered a strong growth last year despite the global financial crisis. SHANGHAI, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Standard Chartered Bank (China) Limited announced Wednesday that it plans to issue 3.5 billion yuan (512 million U.S.dollars) financial bonds in China, the first foreign bank to issue Renminbi bonds in the Chinese mainland.     The announcement was made in the wake of a circular released by the State Council in April on building Shanghai into an international financial center and shipping hub.     The municipal government of Shanghai convened a working meeting late last month on preparation for the financial center goal, promising to support foreign banks to issue yuan-denominated bonds.     "As China's financial market continues to liberalize, Standard Chartered is seeing a number of opportunities for our business," said Peter Sands, Group Chief Executive of Standard Chartered Bank, during his visit to Beijing this week.     The issuance is expected to help elevate the Renminbi's status as an international reserve currency, develop local capital markets, and contribute towards Shanghai's development as a global financial center, said Sands.     Standard Chartered Group reported 26 percent income growth in 2008, or 13.97 billion U.S. dollars despite the difficult global economic environment.     In China, the bank has grown by an average annual compounded growth rate of 80 percent over the past four years.     Standard Chartered Bank is China's oldest foreign bank enjoying150 years of history. It is among the first batch of locally-incorporated foreign banks and has one of the largest foreign bank networks operating in China.

BEIJING, June 8 (Xinhua) -- The new alliance between Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton Ltd. might lead to a monopoly operation and China should be prepared for anti-monopoly measures, warned an expert.     Mei Xinyu, an economist with the Ministry of Commerce (MOC), told Xinhua Monday that China should closely watch the joint venture process of the two mining giants and be ready to work with other countries to curb market manipulation when necessary, with the help of the anti-monopoly law.     Rio Tinto scrapped the proposed 19.5 billion U.S. dollars of investment by Aluminum Corp. of China, or Chinalco, on Friday.     The company announced a cooperative venture with BHP Billiton, which would pay Rio Tinto 5.8 billion U.S. dollars to set up a joint venture to run the iron ore resources of both companies in west Australia.     It was "something other than economic concern", said Zhang Yansheng, director of the Institute of Foreign Trade of the National Development and Reform Commission.     Almost half of China's iron ore needed to be imported, more than half of which was imported from Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton, according to Shan of CISA.     Colin Barnett, premier of Western Australia, told Australian media last Friday China was not on the list of approvals that the two companies needed to obtain.     Internationally they would need the approval of the European Union and possibly the U.S. Justice Department, apart from investigations at nation and state level, he said.     Also, Zhang Junsheng, director of the WTO Research Institute at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, said China might not have a say on the issue, as neither Rio Tintoor BHP Billiton had an affiliated company in China.

BEIJING, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang on Thursday called for technical upgrades to enhance workplace safety and improve emergency rescue systems.     When visiting an exhibition on workplace safety and emergency rescue equipment held by the State Administration of Work Safety, Zhang pointed out that workplace safety is closely related to the interests of the people and the country.     China has kept increasing spending on technical improvements to better workplace safety with advanced equipment, which has played an important role in accident prevention and emergency rescue, he said.     Zhang called for more efforts in technical innovation, scientific management, well-trained rescue teams, and improved emergency rescue systems to improve workplace safety.
