SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorcyclist was killed early this evening in a fiery crash on Interstate 805 in Serra Mesa.The fatal accident occurred on the northbound side of the freeway near Kearny Villa Road shortly before 5:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.The wreck left the victim's two-wheeler in flames on the roadway and forced a closure of the two left-hand northbound lanes of the interstate in the area, the CHP reported. 450

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Father Joe's Villages and Connections Housing Downtown will accommodate nearly 300 additional homeless residents on Christmas Eve due to forecasted overnight rain, the San Diego Housing Commission announced Monday. The commission activates the Inclement Weather Shelter Program when temperatures drop below 50 degrees, the chance of rain is higher than 40 percent or in the case of sustained high winds. The program is a partnership between the commission, the city of San Diego, Father Joe's and Connections Housing. The commission also funds the program. Father Joe's can shelter an additional 250 residents throughout the night while Connections Housing can add up to 30 residents. Check-in at Father Joe's begins at 4 p.m. and residents are expected to check out by 5 a.m. the next morning. Check-in at Connections Housing runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and residents are expected to check out by 7 a.m. the next morning. Those at both shelters will have meals provided to them. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A professional skateboarder and Encinitas resident who pleaded guilty last year to federal drug trafficking charges was sentenced Friday to five years of supervised release, with one year spent on GPS house arrest.Prosecutors had sought a 41-month prison sentence for Robert Lorifice, who pleaded guilty along with Elizabeth Alexandra Landis to charges involving the distribution and sale of heroin and methamphetamine.Lorifice's attorney, Stefano Molea, said his 32-year-old client's path to drugs began when he fractured his tailbone, a "particularly painful" injury that led to an opioid dependence and eventual heroin addiction.RELATED: Encinitas pro skateboarder, girlfriend admit federal drug trafficking chargesHis substance abuse and other physical issues stemming from his injury affected a skating career that previously garnered Lorifice sponsorships and participation in the X-Games, where he won three medals.Molea said Lorifice eventually "hit rock bottom" and "began associating with people that eventually led him down the path of selling drugs."Molea said Lorifice has gone through rehab, enrolled in school, and secured his first non-skateboarding job."Mr. Lorifice is extremely grateful to the court for believing in him and giving him a second chance," the attorney said, "He looks forward to helping those in the skateboarding community realize the dangers of drug use and has recently teamed up with the Ryan Bowers Foundation to work with kids with the hopes of showing them how skateboarding can be a healthy outlet to obtain and maintain their sobriety."RELATED: Three arrested in drug seizure at Encinitas homeProsecutors said Lorifice admitted selling drugs out of his home, and disposing of methamphetamine and other substances when investigators served a search warrant at his home in 2018.Investigators found 193 grams of meth, 231.6 grams of heroin, more than 800 Xanax pills, Roxicodone pills, marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms, along with materials used in drug sales, such as a digital scale, three cell phones and ,824 in cash, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Lorifice's home was searched again that December, and on that occasion, he attempted to flush a "tennis-ball sized chunk of methamphetamine down the toilet," according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Authorities also seized around 31 grams of black tar heroin, 18 grams of meth and ,926 in cash from drug sales.Landis, described by prosecutors as Lorifice's then-girlfriend in a statement issued last year, is slated to be sentenced in January. 2579

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A North County organization was awarded 0,000 in grant funding from the Department of Justice today to provide up to two years of transitional housing assistance for human trafficking victims.North County Lifeline Inc. is one of 73 grant awardees to receive funding Tuesday aimed at providing six to 24 months of transitional or short- term housing assistance for trafficking victims, including rental, utilities or related expenses, such as security deposits and relocation costs.The funding will also go toward assisting victims in finding permanent housing, employment, occupational training and counseling.The Office for Victims of Crime, a component of the Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs, awarded ,104,338 overall to organizations across 34 states, in what the department said was the largest federal investment of its kind.North County Lifeline Inc. is a community-based human services organization serving low-income and underserved populations in San Diego County, according to the organization's website.The organization's housing program utilizes a housing-first model that does not require tenants to meet criteria that often precludes trafficking victims from attaining housing, according to a statement from the U.S.Attorney's Office, which said substance abuse issues, mental health issues and prior criminal records often keep trafficking victims from qualifying for long- term housing.The office said the organization is looking to serve around 75 trafficking victims over the project period.Clients will also be offered supportive services such as ongoing case management, medical and dental care, (limited) legal assistance, literacy/GED/education assistance, LGBTQ services, substance abuse treatment, trauma counseling, life skills training, and employment and financial coaching.``Eradicating the horrific crime of human trafficking and helping its victims are top priorities for the Department of Justice,'' U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer said. ``We are working relentlessly to bring human traffickers to justice and to deliver critical aid to trafficking survivors, who often have nowhere to go once they are freed from trafficking. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was killed Saturday when an SUV overturned and crashed into a tree on the Sea World Drive on-ramp to northbound Interstate 5, the California Highway Patrol said.The accident happened about 9 a.m. when a white Cadillac Escalade luxury SUV, traveling at a high rate of speed according to one witness, overturned and hit a tree on the right shoulder of the Sea World Drive on-ramp, according to CHP Officer Salvador Castro.Units from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department were also on the scene, near the Tecolote Canyon Natural Park and Nature Center.The CHP had no immediate information on the identity of the victim. Castro said nobody else was in the SUV at the time of the crash.Traffic on Sea World Drive and northbound I-5 was reported to be slowing. The CHP will investigate the cause of the accident. 837
