Just days ahead of the presidential election, the U.S. set a new daily record for new COVID-19 infections with 99,000 on Friday, according to a database kept by Johns Hopkins University.The staggering number of infections broke the previous record of more than 88,000, which had been set on Thursday. Prior to that, on Oct. 23, the U.S. recorded nearly 84.000, which broke a daily record which had stood since July.Overall, the U.S. has recorded more than 9 million COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began. More than 230,000 Americans have died of the virus. Both of those figures are the most recorded in any country throughout the world.In addition to rising case numbers, the U.S. is also experiencing a spike in hospitalizations linked to the virus. COVID-19 daily deaths have held fairly steady in recent months since a slight uptick in the summer.The surge in cases comes as Americans head to the polls for the 2020 election — and Pew Research polling shows that more than half of Americans believe the pandemic is a "very important" issue that will affect their vote. However, the importance of COVID-19 seems to break down among party lines — 82% of Democrats consider the pandemic to be an important issue, while just 24% of Republicans believe it to be important.Despite rising case numbers and hospitalization rates, President Donald Trump has insisted that the U.S. is "rounding the corner" on the pandemic and has touted his administration's work in the pre-production of the vaccine. He's also hinted that he intends to fire Dr. Anthony Fauci — his administration's top infectious disease expert and one of the most respected members of the White House coronavirus task force.Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has repeated that he will let science drive his decisions when it comes to the pandemic and has said he supports a mask mandate on federal property.Fauci and other top health officials believe the U.S. is in a perilous position as cases spike ahead of winter months. Judge Esther Salas, a US district judge in the state of New Jersey, spoke out for the first time since her son was shot and killed two weeks ago.Salas’ son Daniel Anderl was killed on Salas’ doorstep. He would have celebrated his 20th birthday this weekend."Two weeks ago, my life as I knew it changed in an instant and my family will never be the same. A madman, who I believe was targeting me because of my position as federal judge came to my house,” Judge Salas said.It is believed that Daniel protected his father Mark Anderl from the path of the bullets. The father survived the shooting, but was wounded three times.“As federal judges, we understand that our decisions will be scrutinized and some may disagree strongly with our rulings, but what we cannot accept is when we are forced to live in fear for our lives because personal information, like our home addresses, can be easily obtained by anyone seeking to do us or our families harm,” Salas said. “Unfortunately, for my family, the threat was real and the free flow of information from the internet allowed this sick and depraved human being to find all our personal information and target us.”The suspect, 72-year-old Roy Den Hollander, died by suicide after the shooting. Hollander was also suspected in the killing of Marc Angelucci, the vice president of the National Coalition for Men. KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A Missouri family finally knows the answer to a 31-year mystery: Who murdered Fawn Cox?The Kansas City Police Department says Cox was 16 years old when she was killed in her home in July 1989, as the rest of her family slept. She was found dead in her second-floor bedroom.Monday, the department announced that it has identified the suspect in the violent murder of Cox.Detectives worked with the FBI on an investigative analysis of the evidence, which revealed the killer's identity, according to a police department spokesman.Police say the suspect died in 2006, but because he was never charged, the department isn't releasing his name.The department says it notified Cox's family of the news on Monday."It was our honor to notify her family of this news today, and we hope they might finally have some closure after decades of uncertainty and pain," wrote the department on Twitter.This story was originally published by Steve Kaut at KSHB. 971

(KGTV) — An East County couple who lost their home in the Valley Fire is dreaming of a rebuild and a new, fireproof home.Earlier this month, Irving and Anita Beeman shot cellphone video of the imposing smoke plumes behind their home on West Boundary Truck Trail. It didn’t take long for the fast-moving flames of the Valley Fire to reach a nearby canyon."Just like a waterfall, it was a 'firefall' down the hill. Amazing and scary," said Irving.Anita left first. Irving got out soon after, after loading up a truck bed full of belongings. He took a photo showing his property, as it began burning."My house was there and then it turned orange. Then it was a yellow ball just slightly bigger than a house. I didn’t have the heart to look back, so I just drove away," said Irving.But there was no escaping the charred reality when the couple returned. Their home of 20 years, along with two vehicles, were destroyed by the fire."Defeated. You look at it and go, 'Where do we start?'" asked Anita.They’ve just started the cleanup process, expected to take months. Their home was insured, and the couple is already envisioning the rebuild and a fire-resistant home."I don’t ever want to see my house burn down again," said Irving.Irving has sketched out this drawing of a fire-resistant home."Half of it will be in a hillside on our property. Half of it will be open space and under a concrete patio roof ... an awful lot of concrete, walls, and floors," said Irving.A water feature will encircle their home.
