BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Rising domestic iron ore production and slowing steel demand have hit some foreign miners and affected the global market, industry leaders said on Tuesday.China's iron ore imports dropped for the third straight month to 47.2 million tons in June, while spot prices have dropped to about 2 per ton after peaking at 5 per ton in April.The country's iron ore imports rose 4 percent year-on-year in the first half of this year, figures from the China Iron & Steel Association (CISA) showed. But domestic ore output increased by 28 percent year-on-year to 485 million tons in the same period, with output rising 37.6 percent in the second quarter from the first quarter."Rising domestic ore production is the main factor that drove down imports, largely impacting supply and demand on the global market," CISA vice-chairman Luo Bingsheng said.The figures form part of the bad news for international mining companies in Australia and Brazil that provide more than half of the ores to China.Iron ore imports from Australia, Brazil and India accounted for 62.3 percent of the country's total ore consumption last year.Brazilian company Vale already predicted in June that the share of imported ores in China would drop this year.About 40 percent of Chinese steel mills have to make cutbacks or put plants on maintenance, blaming increasing costs of imported ores and declining steel prices. Oversupply in the industry will continue to lower production, further driving down ore imports in the third quarter, Luo said.The CISA will also reduce the number of licensed iron ore importers to regulate the imported ore market."We will announce new rules for the industry soon, which include higher standards on the environment, energy consumption and capital requirement," Luo said.

Last night, we felt sorrow when the whole village gathered to have our last dinner in our hometown together," a villager surnamed Wang said.The government paid the dinner and organized a troupe of gong and drum players to cheer up the villagers.Their journey was the starting point for the nation's largest relocation program after that of the Three Gorges Hydro-Power Project, which involved the relocation of 1.27 million.The relocation for the building of the central route of the SNWD by 2014 will involve 330,000 residents - 180,000 in Hubei and 150,000 in neighboring Henan Province.The project is designed to take water from a section of China's largest river, the Yangtze, to satisfy demand in the north China's drought-prone megacities - Beijing and Tianjin.According to the government, from Wednesday until September 30, about 60,000 people will be relocated.At the farewell scene, a fleet of 15 coaches carried the villagers while 34 trucks loaded with the villagers' belongings was followed by a number of ambulances with the village's elderly, unwell and pregnant."We may set a record in terms of speed of relocation -- 60,000 people within 50 days. BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Monday urged concrete measures be taken to protect the ecological environment while building to improve living conditions as part of the country's campaign to develop its vast western regions.Hui made his remarks at the opening ceremony of the achievements exhibition displaying the western regions' environmental protection and construction accomplishments during the "West Development" campaign.The Chinese government launched the "West Development" campaign ten years ago as part of a program to narrow the gap between the country's coastal eastern region and the underdeveloped west.Statistics indicate that forest coverage has increased in the west from 10.32 percent to 17.05 percent over the past decade thanks to west regions' efforts in natural forests preservation, forestry restoration and reducing the impact of desertification.Hui called on local governments in the western regions to more effectively implement the central government's policies and decisions at the recent work meeting on West Development held on July 5 and 6.The western regions should also do its share to maintain the country's ecological security, Hui said.
