ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) - One year after the West Fire scorched Alpine, residents are rebuilding.In total, the blaze burned 505 acres and destroyed 34 homes and 22 other buildings, including a commercial structure.Driving through Alpine Saturday, you could see the different levels of recovery. Some homes were a blank concrete foundation with a chimney, others were wooden frames, or brand new structures with scaffolding around the unfinished, black exterior.Lisa Campbell is on the site of her in-laws' property, Campbell Creek Ranch, every week overseeing the rebuild. "You realize how complicated recovery from something like this is," she said referring to the complications with insurance policies and permitting.On the ranch progress is visible. She walked 10News through the property, pointing out a brand new white fence lining the driveway, a freshly laid concrete bridge with black metal rails, much sturdier than the large wooden log bridge before it. Her smile grew as she reached the patio where numerous fond family memories were created. The pool looked like it was ready to be filled with water and enjoyed, lined with new plaster and luminescent tiles. Clay colored tiles created a patio for lounging poolside."The pool that they used to play in, that's coming back so that's nice to see," she said nostalgically.The hope in pipe, planks and plaster fueling the family forward."The fire and the recovery has impacted some of his decision to study Forestry," she said. "I think it's one of the best things to come out of this, is just him thinking about what he wants to do with his life." They returned Saturday afternoon from a college scouting trip. Her son Colin wants to help others through the same tragedy he faced, and is still coping with. He explained just this week he had to rethink where the family was going to watch the Women's World Cup, "soon enough I think about this [house] and I got a little emotional at the time but I've kinda coped but it still comes back every once in a while."The whole family saying they're adjusting to a new normal, thankful for the continued support from the community and encouraging San Diegans to remember their neighbors in Alpine."It's really important not to forget they're in the process of recovery," she said.Lisa said more than 0,000 were raised to help families recover in Alpine. About 9% of Americans see a dentist every year but not a physician, according to the American Dental Association.“There are a lot of dental offices in more rural areas where it's harder for those people to get access to care. So, the distribution of dentists across the country is really widespread,” said Zena.People may also be more willing to accept a vaccine once they talk with a dentist they trust.On the flip side, a COVID-19 vaccine at a dentist's office could help drum up interest and new dental business.During the H1N1 pandemic, dentists in some states gave the vaccine.Some areas have also authorized dentists to give the flu shot. Words can't describe it," said Kathryn. Kathryn says the sequence of events began around 2:15 pm. Monday in the Elan Summit apartments with a neighbor acting strangely. 339

About an hour north of Tampa, Florida is a plain field, surrounded by a fence. It may look like ordinary land, but the fenced-in area is a burial lot for bodies donated in the name of science.The area is known as a body farm, an outdoor research facility where scientists study how a body decomposes in hopes to use that research to better solve crimes.Erin Kimmerle, an associate processor at the University of South Florida, is in charge of the body farm in Land O’ Lakes, Florida.  Kimmerle and her team study the donated bodies to learn more on how bodies break down, both under the sun and underground.Abigail Kenney's husband, who was killed in a car crash, was the first body to be buried at the farm. For her, the place brings her comfort.“I know I might not be the norm, but I have been given such comfort and how everything happened," Kenney says of the research farm.By donating his body, Kenney says she feels her husband, who was a school principal, is continuing to be an educator even after his death.Thanks to the donated bodies, Kimmerle and her team have found just how fast temperature and humidity speed up decomposition. What takes years in a dry air climate can take weeks in areas like Florida.Researchers learn a valuable lesson about scavengers--how drastically they move bodies, something that could be key to a criminal investigation."The vultures will completely turn a body 180 degrees, separate the arms and legs into a sort of spread position, Kimmerle explains."It might look like somebody was dumped there in a haphazard way or maybe staged even."Kimmerle says she discovered a heavy bird sitting on a rib cage can even break bones and collapse a chest cavity.“The number of injuries can speak to how heinous and atrocious the crime is considered to be, which will determine whether or not it becomes a death penalty case," Kimmerle says.Kimmerle’s team recently solved a murder case. By using what they learned about how bodies decompose, they created a facial reconstruction image. Someone was able to recognize the victim as a woman named Jane Weaver. It was later determined Weaver’s boyfriend had fatally shot her before dumping her body."I mean, our lab has done over 350 cases for law enforcement," Kimmerle says.The Florida body farm is one of eight around the country. Each farm studies different climates--from high in the arid climate of western Colorado to strong humid heat in Florida—in hopes of helping to solve crimes and bring families closure."We have the strong belief that for every missing person, there's a family missing them,” Kimmerle says.And for Kenney, it's comforting to know there's more than her husband's memory that is living on."He's had so much impact on other people beyond his death," she says. 2777
