BEIJING, May 3 (Xinhua) -- China's retail sales climbed 9 percent from a year ago to about 12 billion yuan (1.76 billion U.S. dollars) during the three-day May Day holiday, the Ministry of Commerce said Sunday.     The estimate was based on sales from May 1 to May 3 at 1,000 major domestic retailers monitored by the ministry.     The ministry said robust sales were reported for gold, jewelry, home appliances and autos, as retailers launched promotion campaigns.     Sales of gold and other jewelry rose 19.6 percent, the ministry said, without giving specific figures.     However, it said the Beijing Caishikou Department Store, a major gold retailer in the capital, saw its sales nearly double to 14.3 million yuan on May 1 alone.     Sales of appliances, such as LCD TVs, air conditioners, refrigerators and lap-tops, increased 11.4 percent, while those of automobiles grew 9.2 percent.

BEIJING, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese banks have been active in transacting yuan cross-border settlement after the first deal was made Monday.     The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) said Tuesday it had dealt with yuan cross-border settlement totaling 17 million yuan (2.49 million U.S. dollars) in two days.     Many banks in Guangdong Province were active in dealing with yuan cross-border settlement. The Bank of China Guangdong branch transacted yuan cross-border settlement totaling 7.96 million yuan (1.17 million U.S. dollars) Tuesday.     "Guangdong Province has a large economic scale and is highly dependent on foreign trade. Yuan cross-border settlement could help enterprises avert exchange rate risks and reduce costs," said Cao Licong, deputy governor of the BOC Guangdong branch.     "The service is favored by enterprises and will be promising in the future," said Hu Ye, deputy governor of the ICBC Guangdong branch.     China launched its first yuan cross-border settlement Monday.     China's State Council, or Cabinet, announced in April a pilot program to allow exporters and importers in Shanghai, and southern Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Dongguan cities to settle cross-border trade deals in Renminbi (RMB), or yuan.     China last week issued detailed regulations for the pilot program for cross-border trade settled in yuan. The rules specified how to make transactions using yuan to settle trade with Hong Kong and Macao and regional trade partners.

FLORENCE, Italy, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao said Tuesday that China highly values its relations with Italy and is willing to broaden consensus and deepen pragmatic cooperation with the country in various fields. Bilateral relations have developed smoothly since China and Italy established diplomatic relations 39 years ago, Hu said at a meeting with senior Italian officials, including Culture Minister Sandro Bondi and Toscana Region's President Claudio Martini.     He added that the two countries have further deepened their cooperation in politics, economy, culture and other fields especially since they set up an all-around strategic partnership in 2004. BEIJING, June 18 (Xinhua) -- China's political advisors Thursday underlined the importance of a proactive fiscal policy and a more active employment policy to cope with the global downturn.     They offered their advice as the standing committee of the 11th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee continued its sixth meeting, which started here Tuesday.     The committee members warned of difficulties ahead, citing the worsening impact of the global slowdown, and called for more efforts from all sides to combat the situation.     They also stressed the importance of a moderately easy monetary policy, increased investment in improving living standards, and expanded coverage of social security.     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC, was present at the meeting.

He is the first NPC chairman to visit the country in 15 years.
