CA?ON CITY, Colo. – Thousands have come through the gates of the Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility. But what happens when they walk out? The prison has dozens of programs meant to help the inmates become valued members of society. One program – involving dogs – is called the Prison Trained K-9 Companion Program. Lawrence Trujillo and Zachery Montoya are master dog trainers. They've have been training dogs at the corrections center for five years. “We are with these dogs seven days a week, 24 hours a day,” Trujillo said. They teach the dogs how to follow commands, and how to be on their best behavior. It’s a very coveted job. “Some of these guys haven’t seen a dog in 20 years,” Montoya said. However, getting into the program isn’t easy. “In order to be considered they actually have to apply for the job. They have to meet certain criteria – they have to have a GED – because we’re required them to read information and process it. And they have to be on their best behavior documented for at least six months," K-9 supervisor Michele Wayland said. According to Wayland, it takes about a year to achieve a master handler certification. “We get a dog buddy, and we learn from a master trainer. We go through about 14 months of book work, we have tests in their monthly – hands on tests with the dogs as we progress as trainers – and we have to pass each one of those tests to become a master trainer,” Trujillo said. The guys say they gain more than just life skills. They're also helping families who haven’t been able to effectively train their dogs. “Coming to prison is not so fun, but being able to give something back is very rewarding,” Montoya said. Since the program was created in 2002, inmates have trained nearly 13,000 dogs. A majority of them come from private families who help fund the program through boarding and training fees. “There is no taxpayer dollar supporting this program, so we have to float our own boat,” Wayland said. The program has seen a lot of success the past couple decades. Wayland says Colorado was one of the first, if not the first state to start K-9 training at prisons. Now, they're all across the country. “There actually is a K-9 program in prisons in every state of the union,” Wayland said. The positive results of the program can be seen in the inmates who are hired. “I didn’t have a lot of skills before I came to prison, so this is something I could definitely I could take with me and do out there. There’s been many guys who have left and have been successful doing this one the streets,” Montoya said. Whether working at a shelter, a kennel, or starting their own training business, both Montoya and Trujillo say they’d love to continue working with dogs once they get out of prison. The United States Marshals Service announced that its Operation Safety Net has concluded and a total of 35 missing children were recovered in northeast Ohio as a result.The U.S. Marshals Service, working with state and local partners over the past month to locate and recover missing children and teens from the Cleveland area, were able to recover 35 of the 40 missing children referred to them for the operation.According to the U.S. Marshals Service, around 20% of the recoveries were tied to human trafficking cases and were subsequently referred to the Human Trafficking Task Force in Cuyahoga County.U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of Ohio Pete Elliott said the operation's success exceeded expectations."When I went into this, I thought if we had one or two, it was going to be a success," said Elliott, "and now after the first month, just look at how many are out there."As a result of the operation, The United States Marshals for the Northern District of Ohio has created a permanent Missing Child Unit throughout the 40 counties within the district.“We are proud to assist in Operation Safety Net and I commend the United States Marshals Service for their hard work and dedication toward locating these children," Chief John Majoy of Newburg Heights said in a press release. "Many times, they do not know they are a victim and this operation offers hope, freedom and safety they would not otherwise have."There are currently 382 open missing persons cases according to a federal clearinghouse. More than 120 of those cases are from northeast Ohio."There are so many missing people out there it is mind boggling," said Elliott. He said the agency received additional funding for Operation Safety Net from Washington. Elliott is hopeful now that the missing persons unit will be permanent, the funding will too.Elliott said plans are to add coordinators in Cleveland, Akron, Youngstown and Toledo to help close missing persons cases referred by local law enforcement.Since 2005, the U.S. Marshal's Service said it's helped recover more than 1,500 missing kids.While the operation has come to a close, the U.S. Marshals Service said it will work over the next several weeks to recover the five remaining children whose missing persons cases were referred to them.Ja'Naiya Scott-Lee, 16, was reported missing on Aug. 23 from Cleveland. She is described as standing 5 feet, 3 inches tall and weighing 130 pounds. She is believed to be in Euclid. Two sisters, 15-year-old Yalonda Bates and 17-year-old Leantwana Bates, have been missing since April 18. Leantwana is described as standing 5 feet, 3 inches tall and weighing 135 pounds, while Yalonda is described as standing 5 feet, 3 inches tall and weighing 100 pounds. The sisters are believed to be near Cleveland’s East Side. Alicia Jackson, 16, was reported missing from Berea. She is believed to be near Cleveland’s East Side, possibly in the Glenville neighborhood. Issac Ortiz, 16, was reported missing from Lorain. He is believed to be near Cleveand’s West Side. A Southern Arizona school district is taking a creative approach to better sanitize the classroom daily.Santa Cruz Valley School District bought six Power Breezers that will disinfect a classroom in 20 minutes.Superintendent David Verdugo said the school district did this as a cost effective way to provide extra safety and security to students and staff.He said it will be used after school to clean empty classrooms, hallways and even school buses.Each unit costs about 4,500 dollars."This is an opportunity for them to look at a way to sanitize a room in a short period of time and utilize their staff but also be cost effective," Superintendent Verdugo said.He said the district is also requiring all students to wear masks, have their temperature checked, and social distance in and out of the classroom.Every classroom will only be at 50% capacity, meaning 15 desks per room, he said. In order to do this, the district came up with a hybrid approach to learning."There will be a group A and a group B," Superintendent Verdugo said. "The group A students will be on Monday. They will come to school, have their direct instruction and then they will be at home the next day. Then, group B will come to school, but they will still have some interaction that day with assignments and virtual opportunities."He said the district is planning on starting remote learning on August 3 and then the hybrid approach will being on August 31. Alicia D'Amico and Rowena Merritt were preparing their Temple Terrace, Florida, home for the arrival of a foster child.They were on a local Buy Nothing Project Facebook page giving away free items from their house when they saw something interesting.A daughter, whose father had recently died from COVID-19, was giving away his impressive collection of Halloween decorations.They didn't know Bob Moyer or his family, but Alicia and Rowena love Halloween.Fans of the macabre holiday have each other's backs."We wanted to be able to carry on Bob's tradition, and bring his items to our home," says D'Amico, who also bought some new goodies of her own."Oh, it's a lot," laughs Merritt at the now-massive display. So this year's Halloween spectacle is in memory of Bob.
