Dianne Rodriguez will be retiring in the next few years after decades of working in the hospitality industry. This year, she decided to build a retirement plan. She spent ,000, construction and permits included, for a pre-built granny flat.Work started in April. The landscaping and final touches were recently completed on a 375-square-foot, one bedroom, one bath tiny home, which she plans to rent out as vacation rental on Airbnb. "Living on a fixed income won't be easy. This will supplement our income and enable us to stay in San Diego, and do some traveling," said Rodriguez.She opened it up to her first tenant this week. The cost of the granny flat will add about 0 dollars to her monthly mortgage. She hopes to take in about ,000 a month from renting it out, which translates into an extra ,700.The company that built her tiny home is Instant Guest Homes. Owner Michael Avery says interest in tiny homes has surged since the City of San Diego relaxed its granny flat fees in May. He says the fees for an average project have shrunk by about ,000."Our clients are split between people who are using them to keep the family close, for example, moving grandma into an Instant Guest Room, and people using it for extra income for their retirement," said Avery. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Utah football team arrived in San Diego Wednesday and practiced at Mesa College in Clairemont, five days before facing Northwestern in Monday's Holiday Bowl. The Utes bowl week itinerary includes a joint visit with the Wildcats to U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt on Friday and a trip to the San Diego Zoo on Saturday. The Northwestern team is staying at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina in downtown San Diego and practicing at Southwestern College in Chula Vista. The Wildcats will visit SeaWorld on Saturday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A group of friends from Del Norte High School in 4S Ranch have turned their summer boredom into a way to help others.Andrew Zhang, Jerry Wu, Nick Genovese and Rishi Peddakama are 3D printing face shields and donating them to local hospitals."I guess we were all just kind of feeling like restless and we needed to do something during this like difficult time," Zhang says on why he and his friends decided to start making PPE from scratch.The boys have turned their summertime hobby into a new non-profit, Shield Our Health Heroes. Their website has a place for donations, and all of the money goes towards materials for more face shields.So far, they've raised enough money to donate 750 face shields to 10 local hospitals."We've been told multiple times that our shields fit better and are better quality than a lot of the shields that they're getting," says Genovese."I really think we are making an impact in our community," adds WU. "Our products are actually really helping these health care workers who need these."The four friends each brought their unique talents to the group effort. Andrew came up with the idea and has spearheaded the project. Rishi built the website and set up the donation PayPal account. Jerry does all of the social media and advertising. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A brief pursuit involving a stolen BMW ended Wednesday morning near a nursing home parking lot.The incident began shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday when a new model BMW was reported stolen in Santee.Two hours later, San Diego police spotted the BMW traveling westbound on state Route 94 near the Euclid Avenue exit.When officers attempted to stop the car, the driver refused to pull over and sped away. With police in pursuit, the BMW made its way onto northbound Interstate 805, then transitioned to Interstate 15.The driver exited on Adams Avenue, crashed into a wall, and then got back on northbound I-15.After exiting Camino Del Rio South, police said the driver parked the stolen BMW in a nursing home parking lot in Mission Valley and ran away. Police found him a few blocks away and arrested him.The driver's name and the charges he faces were not immediately confirmed. 901

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 25-year-old has been arrested after being shot by a store clerk he was trying to rob, San Diego Police say.According to police, Hector Lopez-Gastelum entered the La Michoacana store on the 700 block of Vesta Street around 10:40 a.m. on October 18 demanding cash. Police say Lopez-Gastelum was armed with a handgun.After the clerk handed over the cash, the suspect reportedly demanded that a second register be opened.“While Lopez-Gastelum was still in the store, the clerk shot him twice in the torso with his own handgun, which is legally owned,” police said.The clerk then retrieved Lopez-Gastelum’s handgun and called 911. The suspect was taken to a hospital where he is being treated for his injuries.
