SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A report released Thursday by the International Boundary and Water Commission found a significant presence of wastewater in border channels in the Tijuana River Basin impacting San Diego.In the report, "Binational Water Quality Study of the Tijuana River and Adjacent Canyons and Drains," scientists from the United States and Mexico collected samples from of seven transboundary channels.The sampling and laboratory analysis for the study were performed from December 2018 to November 2019. The findings indicate the presence of treated and untreated domestic and industrial wastewater.The scientists analyzed 267 different parameters in water and 204 parameters in sediment for pathogens, metals, industrial organics, pesticides, as well as conventional parameters typically found in wastewater. Of the parameters tested, 131 were not detected and 136 had detectable levels.Parameters that exceeded standards in both countries at all monitoring sites are those associated with the presence of wastewater, including ammonia, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, oils and greases, phosphorus, nitrates, methylene blue active substances and coliform bacteria.Data analysis indicates that the parameters which exceeded standards had originated as uncontrolled sewage spills from Tijuana. Disposal of solid waste or trash contributes to the presence of certain parameters exceeding the standards, such as the organic compound DEHP. Commonly used in the manufacture of plastics, DEHP exceeded applicable standards at all monitoring sites and could have leached from plastic accumulated in the canyons and Tijuana River.The results showed that certain parameters of concern -- Hexavalent Chromium and the pesticides DDT and Aldrin -- were either not detected or found in very low amounts below the limits established in both countries' applicable regulations. Likewise, metals such as copper, nickel and zinc, which are commonly used in the metal plating industry, were detected at levels within applicable standards in both countries.The report also includes recommendations related to control of industrial wastewater discharges in Tijuana, increased resources and assistance for wastewater collection and treatment systems in Tijuana, and continued joint water-quality monitoring and field inspections to detect and respond timely to wastewater flows. 2389

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - According to research published Friday by UC San Diego School of Medicine and San Diego State University researchers, the risk of contracting COVID-19 from handling trick-or-treat candy that has been in contact with a coronavirus-positive person is minimal, but not zero.In the study published Friday in the journal mSystems, the researchers analyzed the viral load on Halloween candy handled by patients with COVID-19.SARS-CoV-2, the virus which causes the illness COVID-19, is primarily transmitted by respiratory droplets and aerosols. The risk of infection by touching fomites -- objects or surfaces upon which viral particles have landed and persist -- is relatively low, according to multiple studies, even when fomites are known to have been exposed to the novel coronavirus. Both produced similar findings.On candies not washed post-handling, researchers detected SARS-CoV-2 on 60% of the samples that had been deliberately coughed on and on 60% of the samples handled normally with unwashed hands. However, the virus was detected on only 10% of the candies handled after handwashing.The dishwashing detergent was effective for reducing the viral RNA on candies, with reducing the viral load by 62.1 percent.The researchers had also planned to test bleach, but noted that bleach sometimes leaked through some of the candy wrappers, making it unsafe for this type of cleaning use.The study authors underscored that the likely risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission from candy is low, even if handled by someone with a COVID-19 infection, but it can be reduced to near-zero if the candy is handled only by people who have first washed their hands and if it is washed with household dishwashing detergent for approximately a minute after collection.Knight led the study with Forest Rohwer, viral ecologist at San Diego State University, and Dr. Louise Laurent, professor at UC San Diego School of Medicine. 3937

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A local realtor who molested two underage girls apologized to his victims during a court hearing Friday, while those speaking on behalf of the victims said they could take solace in the fact that he will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars.Donald Edward Hickey, 62, pleaded guilty last month to five felonies, including lewd and lascivious acts with a child and possession of child pornography for material investigators found on three separate devices.Hickey was initially set to be sentenced to a 25-years-to-life term on Friday, but the hearing was postponed until Sept. 6 so that an interview can be conducted for his probation report, which could affect his future in-custody housing considerations.Prosecutors did not disclose how Hickey knew the victims, but according to Deputy District Attorney Stephen Marquardt, the molestations occurred sometime between 2009 and 2012 in San Diego County. Hickey was arrested last year following a cyber tip sent to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.The former Clairemont resident, who worked as a real estate agent out of La Jolla, was found to have ``thousands'' of videos and images of child pornography in his possession, some of which depicted Hickey abusing children.``This defendant not only preyed on these children, but he also memorialized what he did so that he could retain a copy of the real-time abuse of those children,'' Marquardt said.Hickey's attorney, Danielle Iredale, said Hickey was molested by a local man in his neighborhood when Hickey was between the ages of 10 and 12.Hickey told those in attendance, ``I'm sorry for everything that's happened.
