Good people of America, the dream is still alive. There was no winner in Tuesday's Mega Millions lottery drawing. That means the jackpot for Friday's drawing is now at least 0 million, or a cash lump sum of 8.6 million, and the number will just keep climbing until some lucky person (who will most likely not be you) hits it big. It will be the largest jackpot in the game's history and the second largest in the US lottery jackpot history. The Mega Millions jackpot beat its own record once again after no ticket matched all the six numbers in the drawing Tuesday night. The winning numbers on Tuesday were 69, 45, 61, 3, 49, and the Mega Ball was 9.Friday's Mega Millions along with the next Powerball jackpot are worth more than a cool billion dollars. The reason these jackpots have ballooned to such monstrous proportions is because, well, no one has won in a while. According to a release from Mega Millions, the last Mega Millions jackpot was won July 24, netting 11 co-workers a combined 3 million. The last Powerball jackpot, which totaled 5.6 million, was won August 11 by a man in Staten Island, New York.Believe it or not, this week's combined billion-dollar haul is not the biggest prize in the lottery's history. That honor goes to a 2016 Powerball jackpot, which clocked in at .586 billion (although it was shared by three winners).Of course, the actual amount you'll win is considerably less than a billion dollars, not just because of taxes and annuities and fine print things. The amount you will win is likely HIKO, Nev. (AP) — About 75 people arrived early Friday at a gate at the once-secret Area 51 military base in Nevada — at the time appointed by an internet hoaxster to "storm" the facility to see space aliens — and at least two were detained by sheriff's deputies. The "Storm Area 51" invitation spawned festivals in the tiny Nevada towns of Rachel and Hiko nearest the military site, and a more than two-hour drive from Las Vegas.Lincoln County Sheriff Kerry Lee estimated late Thursday that about 1,500 people had gathered at the festival sites and said more than 150 people also made the rugged trip several additional miles on bone-rattling dirt roads to get within selfie distance of the gates. An Associated Press photographer said it wasn't immediately clear if a woman who began ducking under a gate and a man who urinated nearby were arrested after the crowd gathered about 3 a.m. Friday.Lee scheduled a media briefing later Friday morning.Millions of people had responded to a June internet post calling for people to run into the remote U.S. Air Force test site that has long been the focus of UFO conspiracy theories."They can't stop all of us," the post joked. "Lets see them aliens."The military responded with stern warnings that lethal force could be used if people entered the Nevada Test and Training Range, and local and state officials said arrests would be made if people tried."It's public land," the sheriff said. "They're allowed to go to the gate, as long as they don't cross the boundary."A music group called Wily Savage erected a stage Thursday near the Little A'Le'Inn in Rachel and began playing after dark for several hundred campers who braved overnight temperatures about 45 degrees (7 Celsius).Daniel Martinez, 31, a Pokemon collectible cards dealer from Pomona, California, was among the first to whirl and dance at the dusty makeshift festival grounds — warm beneath a wolf "spirit hood" and matching faux fur jacket."Here's a big open space for people to be," he said. "One person starts something and it infects everybody with positivity. Anything can happen if you give people a place to be."The entertainment kicked off weekend events that also feature a gathering Friday and Saturday at the Alien Research Center souvenir store in Hiko.Owner George Harris said it would focus on music, movies and talks about extraterrestrial lore.Authorities reported no serious incidents related to festivals scheduled until Sunday. Hiko and Rachel are about a 45-minute drive apart on a state road dubbed the Extraterrestrial Highway, and a two-hour drive from Las Vegas.Earlier, as Wily Savage band members helped erect the wooden frame for a stage, guitarist Alon Burton said he saw a chance to perform for people looking for a scene in which to be seen."It started as a joke, but it's not a joke for us," he said. "We know people will come out. We just don't know how many."Michael Ian Borer, a University of Nevada, Las Vegas, sociologist who researches pop culture and paranormal activity, called the festivities sparked by the internet joke "a perfect blend of interest in aliens and the supernatural, government conspiracies, and the desire to know what we don't know."The result, Borer said, was "hope and fear" for events that include the "Area 51 Basecamp" featuring music, speakers and movies in Hiko, and festivals in Rachel and Las Vegas competing for the name "Alienstock.""People desire to be part of something, to be ahead of the curve," Borer said. "Area 51 is a place where normal, ordinary citizens can't go. When you tell people they can't do something, they just want to do it more."Eric Holt, the Lincoln County emergency manager, said he believed authorities could handle 30,000 visitors at the two events. Still, neighbors braced for trouble after millions of people responded to the "Storm Area 51" Facebook post weeks ago."Those that know what to expect camping in the desert are going to have a good time," said Joerg Arnu, a Rachel resident who can see the festival grounds from his home. Those who show up in shorts and flip-flops will find no protection against "critters, snakes and scorpions.""It will get cold at night. They're not going to find what they're looking for, and they are going to get angry," Arnu said. The Federal Aviation Administration closed nearby airspace, although Air Force jets could be heard in the sun-drenched skies, along with an occasional sonic boom. 4442, because the odds of winning either jackpot are one in several hundred million.Sure sure, someone needs to win eventually, we know. But it's not going to be you.**OK, almost certainly not. But cheer up! There are often secondary prizes to these huge drawings that can be worth millions of dollars, and a shocking amount of them go unclaimed -- probably because people get too focused on the biggest possible way to win. 1975

GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The City of Garfield Heights and the Garfield Heights Police Department are facing an excessive use-of-force lawsuit after the Jan. 23 arrest of 28-year-old Kenta Settles.According to Garfield Heights police bodycam video obtained by WEWS, Settles, an unarmed black man, was punched, kicked and stunned with a Taser while he was on the ground, as police attempted to handcuff him.Jeremy Tor, the attorney representing Mr. Settles, Partner with Spangenberg, Shibley & Liber LLP, said officers taunted and used profanity on Settles as he laid on the ground handcuffed. 604

Health care is expected to be one of the top issues for voters in the midterm elections.Polls show Obamacare approval is at an all-time high, while opinions about Republican replacement plans are more negative.Democrats are using that as a centerpiece of their midterm election strategy.“On the other side of the aisle, they never had a plan,” says Democratic strategist Brandon Neal. “It was always just repeal Obamacare, and I think they were infatuated with the whole idea of just destroying something because it had Obama’s name on it.”With rising health care costs, Republicans argue they made necessary changes to Obamacare.“Under Obamacare, every individual in the country was required to have health insurance or pay a tax,” says Republican strategist Brian Bartlett. “Republicans repealed that tax, because we think individuals should have a choice when it comes to their health care.”A growing number of Democrats now want to expand health care coverage even further by pushing for "Medicare for all." Under the idea, the government would eventually take over health care from private insurance companies and every American would be covered.“Under Medicare for all, the average American family will be much better off financially than under the current system, because you will no longer be writing checks to private insurance companies,” says Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vermont).Republicans say the idea of a single-payer health care system is too expensive and bad for most Americans.“Everyone, no matter how much you like your plan, would have their plan taken away,” argues Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin). “Instead you will put in a government run plan, where you have no say in the cost or in the coverage. Obamacare mean fewer choices. Medicare for all means no choices, no competition.” 1805

He was a friend. A brother. A husband. A grandfather.“He was also a chef,” Yolanda Green-Samuel added recalling fond memories of her brother, Eugene Green, who was killed four years ago in a hit-and-run incident while he was on a bicycle. She still recalls a conversation she had with local police in Miami Gardens, Florida, one that is seared into her memory.“[Police said] ‘We have no leads and no answers.’ And at that point I said to him ‘that’s unacceptable.'"”I was engulfed in pain,” Green-Samuel added. But she took that pain and channeled it for good. She’s created an organization to help raise awareness and try to decrease the problem of hit-and-run drivers. She says few people know how much more severe the penalties are when you flee the scene. Prison time for suspects who are caught is becoming more and more common. Samuel-Green wants people to know that more often than not the crash is an accident. It highlights an issue that only seems to be getting worse, according to statistics. In 2016—the latest year for which complete data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration exists—there were more hit-and-run fatalities than there have been in the 40-plus years that NHTSA has been keeping track. There were 2,049 people killed as a result of a hit-and-run 2016. Significant in those numbers: 70% of those deaths were to pedestrians or bicyclists. Jacob Nelson is a researcher with AAA, which put out a study highlighting the new numbers. He says one of the reasons for the uptick in pedestrian and cyclist deaths could be the simple fact that there are more pedestrians and cyclists on city streets.“There’s been a huge push from the public health community to get more people outside walking and biking given all the health benefits to doing that,” Nelson said. But he cautions that cities also need to start looking at putting more barriers between non-motorists and vehicle traffic lanes. The other factor that could be playing a part: distracted driving.“That doesn’t matter whether you are a motorist, pedestrian, or a cyclist. You need to pay attention to what’s around you. A lot of these crashes could be prevented in the first place,” Nelson said. And he joins Green-Samuel in urging any motorist involved in a crash to stay put.“The element of people leaving the scene of a crash is not only illegal, but motorists need to realize that staying on the scene of a crash is the right thing to do,” Nelson said. “It can help prevent people from being killed and it can lessen the severity of the injuries people sustain if we make sure people get medical care in that first hour.”Green-Samuel also hopes that through her organization, Just an Accident: Stop Hit-and-Runs, she hopes more people will become aware of the immense power people hold in their hands when driving a vehicle.“I just don't think people realize the responsibly they take when they get behind the wheel of a vehicle," she said. 2984
