URUMQI, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Internet services were resumed in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Friday, 10 months after a riot in Urumqi on July 5, the regional government said.In a document released by its press office, Xinjiang's regional government said Internet services were "fully resumed" in line with the region's needs for maintaining stability and boosting social and economic development.The move was also aimed at meeting the Xinjiang residents' requests for information, it said.Xinjiang has 7 million Internet users.The government expressed appreciation for the netizens' understanding and support when Internet connection, international long-distance calls and mobile phone text messages were cut in some areas of Xinjiang after the July 5 riot.Disruption of communication was aimed at cracking down on the riot quickly and prevent violence from happening again, as the riot was believed to have been orchestrated by separatists via the Internet, text message and long-distance telephone calls.Resumption of Internet services in Xinjiang has been a gradual process. Access to two leading news websites, xinhuanet.com and people.com.cn, was restored in December, followed by access to another two portal websites, sina.com.cn and sohu.com, on Jan. 10.Email services were resumed in March. International long-distance calls and mobile texting services have also been resumed gradually.

BEIJING, April 5 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC) has set up more than 60,000 new grassroots party organizations nationwide while rectifying some 50,000 slack branches during an 18-month campaign to boost party building.The campaign of studying and implementing the Scientific Outlook on Development, launched in September 2008, has covered all the 75 million Party members in more than 370 branches across the country.The Scientific Outlook on Development, set forth by General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President Hu Jintao in 2003, emphasizes the well-being of the people and a comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable approach to development.Statistics show that during the campaign, more than 1.4 million items of outdated bylaws were abolished in units and departments nationwide. In addition, some 2.1 million new ones were issued and 2.5 million were amended. The bylaws cleanup covered science and technology development, environmental protection, people's livelihood, anti-corruption among other aspects.In the non-public sector, 12,000 new CPC branches were set up during the campaign, and another 24,000 are in the pipeline. All the law firms and certified accountant offices in China also have their own CPC branches installed.In a meeting of the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee in March, the CPC leaders agreed that the campaign was of far-reaching significance for boosting the cause of China's modernization drive and Party building.CPC committees at all levels were urged to fulfill their commitments to the people, win public trust by bringing practical benefits to them and embrace innovation in Party building and contribute to the promotion of social harmony.

  

BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has called for the protection of biodiversity and more efficient use of resources to accelerate the transformation of the economic growth pattern and promote sustainable development.Li, also head of the China Committee of the International Year of Biodiversity, told a plenary meeting of the committee Tuesday "biodiversity is the basis for the existence and development of human beings.""China boasts biodiversity riches, and biological resources are one of the nation's strategic resources," said Li, also a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity.As one of the 12 nations in the world with biodiversity riches, China boasts various types of terrestrial ecosystems. The number of species in China ranks the first among countries of the Northern Hemisphere, statistics show.Li said biodiversity is very important for improving farming, technological innovation, and promoting development.Li said the system of ecological protection and the management of natural reserves should be improved so the country's unique and endangered species are better protected."Efforts should be made to prevent blind- and over- exploitation, and the impact of exploitation on biodiversity should be reduced to a minimum," Li said.He said most Chinese regions rich in biodiversity are located in the west and are underdeveloped. Li called for both ecological protection and improvement in livelihoods in these regions."The protection of biodiversity is a common environmental problem faced by the international community and a development issue concerning human progress," Li said.Biological-technology research and development should be strengthened and international cooperation should be deepened, Li added.Tuesday's meeting also deliberated documents concerning China's protection of biodiversity.

  

BEIJING, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said Friday China would work closely with Sweden to lift bilateral ties to a new level.While meeting with Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf in Beijing, Hu said China highly values relations with Sweden and will further promote cooperation between the two countries in the spirit of mutual respect and benefit."China and Sweden have no conflict of fundamental interests despite different national conditions, and good bilateral ties have brought tangible benefits to both peoples," said Hu.Hu also highlighted the smooth development of bilateral ties since the two countries established diplomatic relations 60 years ago.Chinese President Hu Jintao (R) meets with Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf in Beijing, capital of China, May 21, 2010.Sweden was the first western country to forge diplomatic ties with New China.The Swedish King, who arrived in Beijing Thursday for a five-day visit to China, recalled the friendly exchanges between Sweden and China over the past 60 years, saying Hu's 2007 visit to Sweden had boosted bilateral cooperation.An innovation forum, jointly held by the two countries, will have a positive influence on cooperation in new fields between the two countries, said the Swedish King.Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang expressed hope the two nations would increase innovation cooperation while addressing the forum.China's innovation business has made certain achievements while Sweden is one of the world's most innovative and inventive nations, Li said.
