CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — Joining Oceanside and California state beaches, Carlsbad city officials announced Friday that they will close beach parking lots for the July 4 weekend. The city says that beach parking lots will be closed July 4 and 5 in Carlsbad, over concerns of crowds from counties where beaches are closed traveling to the region.Carlsbad's decision comes after a letter from the Governor's Office of Emergency Services and days after Oceanside instituted a similar beach parking closure.RELATED: Crowds flock to San Diego beaches for Fourth of July weekendEarlier this week, San Diego County Supervisors said they did not plan to mandate county beaches to close and would leave it up to cities to decide themselves."At the time of writing, beaches under the jurisdiction of local governments within San Diego County are the only beaches without visitation restrictions throughout all of Southern California, and therefore are attracting thousands of residents from outside your coastal communities and creating significant potential for disease transmission, particularly in crowded restaurants, bars, retail, and hotels," Cal OES wrote in a letter to the cities of San Diego, Imperial Beach, Coronado, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Oceanside. "To protect the public health of San Diegans and reduce the high potential transmission of this deadly disease in San Diego coastal businesses, we write to request that municipal governments do not open beach parking lots for the July 4th holiday weekend."Beaches in Los Angeles, Orange, Santa Barbara, and Venture Counties are closed this weekend amid surging coronavirus cases in the state.California closed state beach parking lots, including those in San Diego County, ahead of Saturday. 1776

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - For the second time this year, Carlsbad-based airline, Cal Jet, has abruptly canceled all scheduled flights and stopped booking new flights indefinitely. Kelly Skemps was scheduled to fly from McClellan-Palomar airport to Las Vegas on Friday for her brother’s 50th birthday. But Thursday morning she got a call and a text alerting her that her flight had been canceled.“I was shocked,” said Skemps, who admits she was initially excited for the airline to be open.“I thought it was going to be perfect,” she said.Cal Jet bills itself as an easy and competitively-priced flight option from North County to Las Vegas. But this is the second time the small airline has inconvenienced customers by cancelling flights and blocking out their schedule. In February, Cal Jet went dark for nearly two weeks. President George Wozniak said the company they lease the plane from, Elite Air, needed it to fly NCAA basketball players. When they finally resumed operations in March, Wozniak told 10News, “we feel very confident going forward that we have the extra crew and airplanes necessary to fulfill that travel mission for these people.”Cal Jet did not respond to a request for comment after the latest round of cancellations, though a customer service representative attributed the problems to a lack of “aircraft and crew availability.”In an email to customers sent late Thursday, Cal Jet attributed the temporary closure to their efforts to expand to other cities. 1498

CALEXICO, Calif. (KGTV) - Nearly two and a half miles of the current border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border in Calexico are being replaced with 30-foot high, bollard-style walls. The section of the replacement, which broke ground last week, extends from the Calexico Port of Entry westward just past Gran Plaza Outlets, according to Customs and Border Protection officials. The project also includes 2.25 miles of all-weather roads.CBP officials tweeted out photos of the construction Thursday, saying "replacement project in Calexico is going well. 30-foot tall steel bollard wall is stacked on the ground waiting to be installed after the removal of old landing mat barrier."RELATED: President Trump to visit San Diego, inspect border wall prototypesThe section under construction was built in the 1990s out of recycled metal scraps and old landing mat. While officials said the wall has proven effective, "smuggling organizations damaged and breached this outdated version of a border wall several hundred times during the last two years," resulting in costly repairs. The construction is separate from President Donald Trump's promised wall across the border. The project is the first border construction contract awarded by the Trump administration, aside from the eight prototypes for a new wall built near Otay Mesa last year.INTERACTIVE TIMELINE: President Trump's border wallThe president is expected to make a visit to view the prototypes sometime in March. While a federal judge sided with the Trump administration in a lawsuit against the wall by environmental groups and California, Trump tweeted California's portion of the wall is on hold until the entire wall is approved. 1749
