WASHINGTON, D.C. – Former President Barack Obama released an essay Monday on how he thinks Americans can sustain the momentum of the George Floyd protests to bring about real change. Obama first acknowledged that the protests that have popped up across the U.S. represent a genuine and legitimate frustration over the failure to reform police practices and the broader criminal justice system. He also pointed out that while the overwhelming majority of protesters have been peaceful, a small minority resorted to violence in various forms, putting innocent people at risk and compounding the destruction of neighborhoods that are already struggling. “I saw an elderly black woman being interviewed today in tears because the only grocery store in her neighborhood had been trashed,” wrote Obama. “If history is any guide, that store may take years to come back. So, let’s not excuse violence, or rationalize it, or participate in it. If we want our criminal justice system, and American society at large, to operate on a higher ethical code, then we have to model that code ourselves.”Obama goes on to argue that protests alone won’t bring about the change that is needed to stop police brutality. He says it will a combination of activism and getting people out to vote for people who care about police reform, in local and national elections alike.“So, the bottom line is this: if we want to bring about real change, then the choice isn’t between protest and politics. We have to do both,” wrote Obama. “We have to mobilize to raise awareness, and we have to organize and cast our ballots to make sure that we elect candidates who will act on reform.”Lastly, Obama called on activists to make their demands for criminal justice and police reform specific, so it will be harder for elected officials to “offer lip service” and then fall back into business as usual once protests stop. “The content of that reform agenda will be different for various communities. A big city may need one set of reforms; a rural community may need another,” he wrote. “Some agencies will require wholesale rehabilitation; others should make minor improvements.”Obama says every law enforcement agency should have clear policies, including an independent body that conducts investigations of alleged misconduct. At the end of his essay, the former president included a link to 2372

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio — It's hard to become a professional athlete. So, when an Ohio man got an offer to play football overseas, he was all in. However, the person recruiting him to play was playing him the whole time.Desmond Stanley has been tackling his dream to play professionally for a long time.“I started playing football when I was about 5,” the Willoughby, Ohio, man said. After graduating from Lake Erie College last year, he put his video highlights on the internet. He was determined to catch a break.“I thought I had a great opportunity with this Japan thing,” Stanley said. In late March, Stanley thought he scored a job after getting text messages from a man who said he was in Japan. "I was looking for a new opportunity," Stanley said. "It seemed like it was perfect."The supposed recruiter used the name of a real Japanese football team, sent Stanley a contract, and told him to pay for some processing. Stanley sent money through Western Union."You'll get the job immediately. They might not even interview you,” said Sue McConnell from the Better Business Bureau Serving Greater Cleveland. She said job scams were among the top 10 most used schemes that hit the Cleveland area in 2018. “Suddenly, it turns sour because they are either going to want money from you for some kind of test or certification." And that's what happened to Stanley. He was told to pay nearly ,000 more to make the job complete. Stanley said no."The agent stepped in and he was like, 'What can you pay? I'll help you,' " he said.Stanley said he did his homework on the job offer, even asking experienced people in the sports industry to look over the contract."Everyone who I spoke with said it seemed ... it seemed legit,” Stanley said. This isn't the first time a scam like this has popped up. According to an 1815

WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration is reporting the first U.S. drug shortage tied to the viral outbreak that began in China. The agency said late Thursday that the maker of the drug contacted health officials recently about the shortage. Officials declined to identify the manufacturer or the product. China ranks second among countries that export drugs and biotech medicines to the U.S. The agency says there are currently no U.S. shortages of biotech products, medical devices or other key health care products tied to the outbreak. 558

UNITED KINGDOM — It was a 7-hour delay for more than 300 passengers and crew on board a Pakistan International Airlines flight this weekend after a woman mistook an emergency exit door for the plane's restroom.Once she opened it, the airplane's emergency chute deployed. That spurred a series of events. The plane was still on the ground; it was about to push back from the gate. (Which begs the question: Why was the passenger out of her seat at the time?) An airplane's emergency door cannot be opened when an airplane is in-flight as the pressure won't allow it. Last month, a passenger on a Ryanair flight (also from the Manchester Airport) tried to open a door in-flight, and he was tackled by other passengers. The door would not have opened.A chute deploys at 3,000 pounds of air per square inch. If someone had been standing by the Pakistan International Airlines airplane where it opened, they could have been killed. In 2010 when a JetBlue flight attendant popped open a flight's emergency slide and went down it following a verbal altercation with a passenger, it was estimated it cost ,000 to replace the slide.Fortunately, no one was injured on the Manchester Airport ground when the woman on the PIA flight opened the emergency door. But the incident added seven hours onto the schedule for the airplane — which was already scheduled for a 7-hour, 50-minute flight to Islamabad. Here are some of the things the mistake spurred:? By aviation rules, the slide has to be removed and replaced. It can be used again once it is tested for safety? The crew had to re-seat or offload nearly 60 passengers — the rear door could no longer be used in an emergency? Offloaded passengers were given transportation to a hotel and hotel accommodations? The offloaded passengers were given the opportunity to take next available flightOfficials say some media outlets reported shortly after the incident that the plane was on the runway during the incident, but that is not correct.Deploying a passenger airplane chute is very costly: An average of million annually is lost in North America alone due to accidental slide deployments, 2155
