SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man is searching for the good Samaritan who pulled him from a rip current in La Jolla this week.Patrick Fitzpatrick was swimming at Windansea Beach Tuesday."It took a snap second before I was in control to completely out of control," Fitzpatrick recalled, after becoming caught in a rip current. "There was no way on Earth that I was going to live from this. I was in a panic. I couldn't use my arms and legs now."Someone on shore, only known as "Dustin," noticed Fitzpatrick struggling and swam out to help him."He's a guardian angel. He owe him my life, he saved my life," Fitzpatrick says.Dustin swam out and kept Fitzpatrick calm before more help could arrive and get him to shore.Fitzpatrick is hoping to reunite with his mystery rescuer to say thank you."The humanity that comes from an act of kindness like this, from a perfect stranger," Fitzpatrick said. 892

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new study says that Millennials are leaving their jobs mainly because they're looking for more meaning in what they do.The study, by the San Diego Chamber of Commerce, found that 51.9% of Millennials say they're thinking of leaving their job in the next six months.Of the ones who felt that way, their main reason for wanting to leave is a lack of meaning or purpose in their current job."They want to understand exactly what product or service their company provides and how it makes their community better," says Chamber VP of Research Sean Kerafin, who wrote the study."They can't find all of their value in a job simply from a paycheck," Kerafin says. "They have to understand the bigger picture."Kerafin says that's an essential lesson for local employers to know since Millennials make up 39.7% of the workforce. That's more than any other generation.Kerafin says companies need to emphasize a culture that is "Purpose-Driven" over one that prioritizes profit if they want to attract and retain Millennials.Other findings in the study, which is based on interviews with 400 Millennials in San Diego, show that they want to work for a company where there is an opportunity to grow from within.The survey found that 22% of Millennials cite professional development as a top driver of satisfaction, compared to just 5.8% who cite office perks."They come from a generation of participation trophies and being told they can do anything they put their mind to, and they believe it," Kerafin says. "The truth is they can if they're supported."Kerafin says companies that have excellent mentoring and development programs are more likely to keep Millennials around longer.The study also found that 65.3% of Millennials are satisfied with their job. But even that may not be enough to keep them in San Diego.According to the survey, 44% of Millennials are "very likely" to leave San Diego in the next two years. They say a lack of affordable housing is the main reason.The Chamber says local government leaders can help businesses by incentivizing more housing. 2087

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Rancho Bernardo family's home has become a must-see experience for their neighbors. Inspired by Disneyland's Haunted Mansion, the Loveless family has created a walk-through Halloween event that has grown bigger and bigger each year. She has recreated many of the iconic characters from the popular ride, as well as adding other spooks and haunts.For creator Katherine Loveless, it brings her back to her childhood. "I grew up on a city street that had a lot of haunted houses like this, so I grew up with it," Loveless said.Loveless and her husband, Bernard, began work on this year's Loveless Manor in August. They have created panels, which serve as moveable walls to create a maze-like path that runs through their yard. The family put a lot of thought into how to adjust their plans for the pandemic.“Last year we did kind of a smaller, tight trail that went in and out the same gateway," Bernard said. "We knew that wasn’t an option and we needed to have the whole trail outside and have more space between groups.”Loveless Manor is only open Halloween night. Reservations are required, with only a handful still available as of Friday afternoon. 1180

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego County leader is asking the state to look into what she calls the disproportionate placement of sexually violent predators in rural East County. In a letter, Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Dianne Jacob asked Attorney General Xavier Becerra to investigate the placements. Jacob says nine out of the 12 predators, dubbed the "dirty dozen" by Jacob, released in the San Diego region have been housed in the communities of Campo, Boulevard and Jacumba Hot Springs. RELATED: Placement hearing to be held for 'bolder than most' rapist“Rural East County should not be treated as a convenient dumping ground for SVPs,” said Jacob. “In their attempt to quietly house these monsters in our county, state officials are exploiting small, rural communities that often lack the resources and clout to challenge these placements.”The letter comes as a judge gets ready to consider a state proposal to put Alan Earl James, another sexually violent predator, in Jacumba Hot Springs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new poll shows that a majority of San Diegans support stricter gun laws in the U.S.A Survey USA poll released Sunday morning shows that 71 percent of those asked in San Diego support stricter gun laws while 18 percent say they oppose tighter gun restrictions.Meanwhile, 32 percent of those asked say even private gun ownership makes the country less safe while 29 percent says it makes no difference.Of those asked about safety, 76 percent of San Diegans say they worry their child could be a victim of a school shooting.RELATED: San Diegans rally for gun control in March for Our Lives eventsWhile 73 percent of people polled say they don’t know anyone who’s ever been a victim of gun violence, 27 percent of those polled say they worry a great deal about being a victim of a shooting.As far as a possible solution, 77 percent of people polled say Congress needs to do more to address gun violence.
