GOTEBORG, Sweden, March 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group signed a deal worth 1.8 billion U.S. dollars with Ford Motor Co. here Sunday to acquire the U.S. auto giant's Volvo car unit.Under the definitive stock purchase deal, Geely will own 100 percent of Volvo Cars and its related assets.The agreement was inked by Li Shufu, founder and chairman of Geely, and Lewis Booth, chief financial officer of Ford, at a ceremony at the headquarters of Volvo in Goteborg, the second largest city of Sweden. Geely Chairman Li Shufu attends a press conference after the signing ceremony in Goteborg of Sweden, March 28, 2010. China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group signed a deal with Ford Motor Co. here on Sunday on the takeover of Sweden's Volvo Cars.The ceremony was witnessed by Li Yizhong, China's minister of industry and information technology, and Maud Olofsson, Swedish deputy prime minister and minister for enterprise and energy.The agreement provides a solid foundation for Volvo to continue to build its business under Geely's ownership, said Booth at the ceremony."China, the largest car market in the world, will become Volvo's second home market. China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group signed a deal with Ford Motor Co. here on Sunday on the takeover of Sweden's Volvo Cars.Li promised that Geely will maintain the strong collaborative relations that Volvo has built with employees, unions, suppliers, dealers and above all, customers.Volvo Cars will eventually become a separate company with its own management team based in Goteborg and a new board of directors, he told reporters after the ceremony.Volvo, which has about 22,000 workers around the world including 16,000 in Sweden, was purchased by Ford in 1999 for about 6.4 billion dollars.But Ford has been attempting to sell Volvo since late 2008, due to its poor market performance. Geely was named as the preferred bidder for the Swedish subsidiary in October 2009.Geely, which started to manufacture cars in 1998, is a major private automaker in China, with its headquarters based in southeast China's Zhejiang province. Geely Holding Group is the parent company of Geely Automobile Holdings.Besides Ford, some other Western auto giants are also seeking buyers in China. Beijing Automotive Industry Holdings has agreed to buy some powertrain technology from General Motors Co.'s Swedish Saab unit.

He said he believed China would overcome the disaster soon.Turkish President Abdullah Gul expressed deep sorrow over the huge casualties in the quake. He also offered condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a quick recovery. Gul said that the Turkish people would like to share the sorrow of the Chinese people.Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed expressed great sorrow over the huge casualties in the earthquake, and conveyed deep sympathy to the people affected by the quake. He also sent his sincerest condolences to the families of the victims.Singapore's Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong sent condolences to the Chinese people.Marzuki Alie, speaker of the House of Representatives of Indonesia, expressed condolences to the victims and the Chinese people.Ethiopian President Girma Wolde Giorgis expressed great sorrow over the huge casualties in the earthquake and sent deep sympathy and condolences to the Chinese people and the families of the victims. He said he firmly believes that the Chinese people would overcome the disaster under the leadership of their government.Tanzania President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete sent condolences to the victims and sympathy to the families affected by the quake.Tunisian President Zine Al-Abidine Ben Ali expressed sincere condolences and deep sympathy to the Chinese people.Jose Maria Pereira Neves, the prime minister of Cape Verde, and the president of the country's National Assembly, Aristides Raimundo Lima, conveyed deep condolences to the victims, their families and the Chinese people.Pakalitha Mosisili, prime minister of Lesotho, sent his deepest condolences to the victims of the earthquake and wished the injured a quick recovery.Guinea Parliament Speaker Bissau Raimundo Peireira expressed sincerest condolences to the families of the victims.Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Vice Prime Minister Waldemar Pawlak conveyed their deepest sympathy and sincerest condolences to the families of the victims. He also said Sam Nujoma's visit to the Expo would consolidate friendship between China and Namibia.Sam Nujoma, also former president of the SWAPO party, said the opening ceremony was unforgettable and believed the Expo would be a grand event for people around the world to promote peace, boost development and pursue progress.Meeting with Yoshito Sengoku, Jia said China-Japan relations have maintained a good momentum for development.The Chinese government is willing to work with Japan to boost the development of the China-Japan strategic relationship of mutual benefit by enhancing high-level mutual trust, deepening mutually beneficial cooperation, expanding people-to-people and cultural exchanges, Jia said.Yoshito Sengoku said Japan is ready to strengthen high-level, people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and deepen cooperation with China in economy, trade, science and technology to further develop ties.

  

YUSHU, Qinghai, April 25 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a 7.1-magnitude earthquake in northwest China's Qinghai Province on April 24 has climbed to 2,203, the rescue headquarters said late Saturday.As of 5 p.m. Saturday, 73 people were still missing, the headquarters said.Civil affairs authorities in Qinghai also said Saturday they would raise the monthly allowance for orphaned children, widowed elderly and disabled people in the wake of the quake.Ma Danzhu, head of the disaster relief division under the provincial department of civil affairs, said the monthly allowance would be raised to 1,000 yuan (146 U.S. dollars) per person, from 600 yuan as normal standard, for three months.Families of the dead, including locals and migrant workers, also will receive 8,000 yuan in subsidies for each death, according to a policy announced earlier.
