Andra Brown of the San Diego Police Department told reporters at the scene."During the arrest, an altercation ensued and the agent discharged his firearm, wounding the man, who was later identified as an adult Mexican national," Heitke said."Nearby agents and law enforcement personnel responded immediately and initiated lifesaving efforts until emergency medical services arrived," Heitke said.The statement from the Consulate General of Mexico in San Diego said it "has taken action to guarantee due process in this case, in light of the fact that the family members of the victim have not been located as of today."The consulate said the San Diego Police Department will be in charge of the investigation, "even though the agents responsible for this incident are Border Patrol officers.""In an unfortunate coincidence, this incident follows another one reported on October 19, in which Mexican national Jose Alfredo Castro Gutierrez lost his life in an altercation with San Diego police officers," the consulate said. It is still early in the investigation, but preliminary information is that the male, a Mexican national, attempted to enter the United States illegally and was confronted by a Border Patrol agent."Brown said the man fought with the agent, who received minor injuries during the incident."The agent fired his duty weapon, striking the male once in the torso," Brown said.The man has been identified, but his name was not immediately released. Neither was the Border Patrol agent's name immediately released."The investigation and review process for an agent-involved shooting are extremely thorough," Brown said. "The U.S. Border Patrol is cooperating with the investigation."When the homicide unit completes their independent investigation, it will be reviewed by the U.S. Attorney's office, Brown said."Customs and Border Protection will continue to fully cooperate with this ongoing investigation," Heitke said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Thursday were searching for a suspect who carjacked a 56-year-old man while he was listening to music in a City Heights parking lot.It happened around 9:35 p.m. Wednesday in a parking lot near the intersection of Euclid and University avenues, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.The victim was listening to music in his red 2013 Nissan Versa sedan when a man walked up to the car, lifted his shirt up and showed that he had a gun in his waistband, Heims said. The suspect then told the 56-year-old man to get out of the car, and the victim complied.The suspect got into the Nissan, which had California license plate 7EKT818, and drove off southbound on Euclid Avenue, the officer said.The suspect was described as a 5-foot-11 Hispanic man in his early 20s who weighed between 150 and 180 pounds. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego International Airport broke its passenger traffic record for the fifth consecutive year, serving roughly 24 million passengers in 2018, the Airport Authority announced Friday.The total -- up nearly 10 percent over last year -- included one million international passengers, a 19 percent jump from 2017, according to the Airport Authority, which credited several airlines' expanded service and airport-wide traffic increases for the new record.``This is a tremendous time of growth for not only SAN but the entire San Diego region,'' said Kim Becker, the airport's president and CEO. ``With more people choosing San Diego as their destination of choice, we are looking ahead at projects to accommodate this trend and provide the world-class airport experience our customers and community deserve.''Airlines servicing the airport added 16 new routes throughout the year and 15 of the airport's 17 airlines saw overall traffic increases.According to the Airport Authority, Southwest Airlines added 794,401 passengers from 2017 to 2018, the most of any airline flying out of San Diego. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Tuesday that it will make its inclement weather shelter program available to homeless residents in the county's unincorporated areas. The agency's Housing and Community Development Services division activates the shelter when rain is expected for at least two days, reaches two inches in a 24-hour period or when a storm includes a threat of flash flooding. County officials monitor seven unincorporated zones to determine when to activate the shelter program. Homeless residents can contact 211 San Diego between noon and 7 p.m. to be connected to a shelter provider. In some cases, residents are eligible to receive assistance with transportation to an inclement weather shelter. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Convention Center announced its planned road closure windows Wednesday for Comic-Con 2019, scheduled for July 17- 21.Harbor Drive will be closed to all traffic between First Avenue and Park Boulevard from 3-10 p.m. July 17, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. July 18-20 and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. July 21. The closure will affect all non-foot traffic, according to the convention center, including cars, bikes, skateboards and dockless bikes and scooters.Comic-Con attendees will also need a valid convention badge to access the convention center, its front drive and adjacent terraces and sidewalks.
