BEIJING, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said Tuesday China must accelerate its transformation of economic growth pattern as the global economy was undergoing structural changes.Li made the remark when he met with members of the International Advisory Council of the China Development Bank (CDB) in Beijing.Li briefed the advisory council members about China's economic situation and its macro-economic policy.He said China had to advance its economic restructuring while continuing the process of reform and opening, to improve people's livelihoods and to enhance the vitality, competitiveness and sustainability of the economy. It consists of notable figures from political, financial and academic circles around the world, including former Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating.The advisory council members were in Beijing for an annual meeting focusing on global economic and financial situation, the international financial crisis and the CDB's role in economic recovery.During the meeting with Li, Keating relayed his appreciation of China's success in maintaining stable and fast paced economic growth and contributing to the recovery of world economy.Keating said over the years, the advisory council members had come to realize that the CDB was a rare and valuable institution. He expressed willingness to further expand links between the CDB and institutions outside of China.
PYONGYANG, May 9 (Xinhua) -- The Rodong Sinmun, a leading newspaper of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), hailed the recent successful visit to China by top leader Kim Jong Il in an editorial published Sunday.The editorial said that the people of the DPRK are "very glad and excited" about the visit. It is a "meaningful opportunity" to strengthen the friendship between the two parties and the leaders of the two countries.The article also indicated that the DPRK will make efforts to further strengthen the traditional DPRK-China friendship.Both countries shared the view that peace, stability and prosperity of the Korean Peninsula are in the common interests of the two countries and other Northeastern Asian nations, the editorial said.The two sides will make joint efforts to achieve the objective of denuclearizing the Peninsula on the basis of the Sept. 19 Joint Statement, it added.The editorial also said that the people of the DPRK sincerely wish the Chinese people still greater achievements in their socialist construction and the cause for national reunification.Kim Jong Il made an unofficial visit to China from May 3 to 7. XIANGNING, Shanxi, April 11 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in the flooded Wangjialing coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province rose to 28 after one more body was recovered Saturday afternoon.Rescuers are searching for the 10 miners who remained missing, the rescue headquarters said.About 280,000 cubic meters of water had been pumped out by Saturday, more than two times of the planned volume, said the spokesman Liu Dezheng at a press conference.The water in section two had been all drained up and the search work there had been finished, Liu said.More than 60,000 meters of water had been pumped out in section one, nearly four times than planned, but the water level fell much slower than expected, Liu said.Toxic gas also brought great difficulties to rescue work, he said.A total of 261 miners were working below ground when the mine was flooded on March 28, and 108 miners escaped unharmed while 153 were trapped underground.On Monday, 115 miners were brought out of the mine alive after being trapped for more than a week. They are receiving medical care in five hospitals in Hejin and Taiyuan Cities.
