SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A program dedicated to giving high school girls in under-served areas skills to help get good part-time jobs is being given a ,000 grant from The San Diego Foundation."These students are going to be able to experience real world, hands-on training in highly technical fields," said Katie Rast from The San Diego Foundation.Called "Girls Take Flight", 20 students from schools in Southeast San Diego are spending their spring break in a classroom partaking in a "drone camp".The girls are learning how to build, fly, repair, and code drones. The hope is that those skills will help them get the part-time jobs that they'll likely need to pay for college.In addition, about half of the students will be awarded internships with the Elementary Institute of Science, which is administering the program.Those internships will include tours and introductions to potential mentors from prestigious San Diego-based tech companies, including Qualcomm, Northrop Grumman, and General Atomics.10News spoke with students who say opportunities such as this one are hard to find in communities such as theirs, leading to their dedication to take advantage."I know my parents did so much to bring me here," said Sundus Mohamed, a Crawford High student and daughter of Somali immigrants. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was killed after crashing into a parked truck on Interstate 5 in East Village near Petco Park Monday afternoon. The crash happened shortly after 1 p.m. on southbound Interstate 5 at Imperial Avenue, according to California Highway Patrol. CHP says the 21-year-old victim from Calexico was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed when he crashed his 2015 Nissan sedan into a parked cargo truck. CHP says the victim, who hasn't yet been identified, died at the scene. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A heartbroken mother is making a plea for tips after a burglar makes off with a computer with with "priceless memories."An upset Sheila Conway shared her story with 10News, weeks after she returned to her home on Norwich Street to a break-in. It appears the burglar opened an unlocked outer door, before somehow opening another door. Taken were Conway's purse and her silver HP laptop. Inside that computer: A lifetime of memories of her only child, her son Tyler Peckham. Tyler, diagnosed with schizophrenia, took his own life in 2014 at the age of 26. Just off the kitchen is a wall memorial dedicated to Tyler, filled with photos showing Tyler growing up into adulthood. Conway says the computer contained hundreds of photos, most of them not backed up. “Cried a lot and just furious. It wasn’t a laptop, but memories that were stolen … everything from baby pictures to adult photos that I’ll never see again,” said Conway. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A report from SANDAG Thursday showed that unemployment in San Diego County fell for the sixth straight week.San Diego County now has a 14.8% unemployment rate for the week ending June 20 -- that's down 1.5% from the previous week, and significantly lower than the peak of 25% on May 9."We're not out of the woods at all," warned SANDAG Chief Economist Ray Major. "This is still 50% higher than the highest unemployment we had during the great recession."Major said a 14.8% unemployment rate means 200,000 San Diegans are still out of work. According to the report, ZIP codes in Logan Heights, City Heights, Encanto, the College area, and San Ysidro are the hardest hit.Major told ABC 10News the looming threat of renewed restrictions on businesses may lead to another rise in unemployment."Many of these businesses have been waiting to open up again," said Major. "They haven't made any revenue for the last couple of months, they were open for about 19 days and now you're telling them they have to shut down again. Some of them are not going to be able to make it."Phil Blair, Chief Executive of Manpower Staffing, which helps companies find temporary employees, said he doesn't think unemployment will fall below 10% until the tourism industry recovers."We've got to open up airports, we've got to open up our convention center," Blair said. "And all of us have to be comfortable flying and then going into a big room with 8, 10, 12,000 people … Then we'll see (unemployment) at 13, 12 percent. And then once the virus dies down, I think within three months we'll be back within 5 or 6 percent.
