CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — SpaceX has launched a newer, bigger version of its Dragon cargo ship to the International Space Station. Sunday's liftoff from NASA's Kennedy Space Center marks the first time that Elon Musk's company has two capsules in orbit at the same time. This latest Dragon should reach the space station on Monday, joining the Dragon that delivered four astronauts last month. The 6,400-pound shipment includes Christmas treats and presents for the seven station residents. NASA isn't divulging any of the gifts, but roasted turkey and cranberry sauce are on the way. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - Members of the North San Diego County Genealogical Society have found a way to help Camp Fire victims recover some of what they lost in December's devastating fire.They're donating dozens of boxes of books on history and genealogy to the Paradise Genealogy Society."When we heard about the fire, we thought, wow, we have a lot of books that we don’t know what to do with," says NSDCGS President Julianne Adamik. "As you can see, they’re taking up a lot of room in my garage!"The Paradise Genealogy Society lost their entire library in the fire. Before and after pictures show the building burned to the ground. It housed nearly 2,800 books and another 500 periodicals and articles about genealogy, the study of ancestry.While some of it, like local records, is irreplaceable, the members of the NSDCGS say the books they can give will help the people in Paradise start to rebuild."You need a distraction. You need to get back to your old ways in life," says NSDCGS Vice President Tom Cousineau. "These people were working on their Genealogy fairly regularly and they need to get back to their normal way of life."Many of the books are duplicates of books the NSDCSS already has in their library in Carlsbad. Adamik says they get donations all the time from people looking to clear some space or from estates of genealogy fans who have passed away.Volunteers have also searched sites like eBay to see if any of the books are worth selling. Adamik says the society in Paradise could do that as a fundraiser.The only catch in the plan is figuring out a way to get more than 40 boxes of books from Carlsbad to Paradise. Adamik says they're looking into creating a palate that can be shipped or finding someone willing to drive them up in a truck.A representative from the Paradise Genealogy Society says the donations will be beneficial and they appreciate all the support the NSDCGS has given them over the past few months. 1955

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - The Orange County father who tied up his daughter and gagged her in an attempt to force her into drug rehab in Mexico could face charges. California Highway Patrol officers pulled over the car Monday night on Interstate 5 off of Cannon Road in Carlsbad after getting calls from drivers about a possible kidnapping. "Received a report of a woman bound and gagged in the back seat, kidnapped essentially," said CHP Sgt. Mike Morrin. The 17-year-old girl was with her 57-year-old father and 21-year old sister. According to the CHP, both the father and sister could face charges ranging from kidnapping to child endangerment. "You just can't gag someone and bind them and take them in the back of a car to a foreign country. That's just not acceptable. We're trying to sort out the details," said Sgt. Morrin. The teen admitted to officers she's been using methamphetamines for the last year. Her relatives told 10News she escaped twice from local rehabs. The family lives in San Juan Capistrano. Nancy Knott is a licensed psychotherapist. She spent years working as a treatment counselor for Scripps before going into private practice. Knott is not familiar with this case, but says parents often reach a breaking point. "When it reaches a certain point, desperation sets in, and anytime desperation sets in, people don't always make the correct choices. They're trying a lot of times to save the life of their child," said Knott.Knott said families in California can hire outside help when trying to force a minor into treatment. "A parent could arrange for a transport company to take their child into treatment and they do not use physical restraints unless absolutely necessary. Again, first choice is to have the parents to seek out some expert advice, try to work with their child themselves, if not, usually the one off approach works better especially with the child parent relationship to bring in a professional, to work with the child and the family. The family would be signing off permission, or the guardian, to the transport company to take that child to treatment," said Knott adding that the company should be licensed and bonded. Knott doesn't recommend seeking treatment in Mexico. "I've never taken a patient to Mexico. And frankly, never will. The laws are different there. The family is always at great risk of crossing that border because they are not going to be the same laws as in the US, so it's riskier; that's my opinion," said Knott.Knott said early intervention is critical, but recovery can still take years. "Treatment doesn't always work the first or second time with adolescents. We look at keep them alive until 25, meaning the brain is more developed at 25 to have a little more rational way of looking at their problem," said Knott. CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) — An East County resident happened upon a massive surprise Friday morning.A wayward tortoise was found by the resident on Buckman Springs Rd. in Campo Friday. A San Diego County Department of Animal Serivces officer responded to the report but immediately realized he would not be able to lift the animal on his own.A Cal Fire crew arrived to help get the tortoise out of the yard, coaxing it onto a stretcher and then lifting the heavy reptile into an Animal Services vehicle.The tortoise was then taken to the department's Bonita shelter.While it's unclear how the massive animal ended up in the East County yard, Animal Services said someone called soon after the catch to report it may have been their tortoise, aptly named "Tank."
