SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 27-year-old man is recovering Sunday after being shot in the back in the Mountain View area , police said.A verbal argument between two groups Saturday in the 200 block of Southlook Avenue, which started just before 9 p.m., escalated into a violent encounter, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department."During the fight someone fired multiple shots into the crowd," he said. "Everyone fled the scene after the shots were fired."An 18-year-old man was detained and later arrested, Heims said.San Diego Police Gang Detectives are currently investigating the case.The victim's injuries don't appear to be life threatening, authorities said.Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 788

-SAN CLEMENTE ISLAND (CNS) - The remains of seven U.S. Marines and a Navy sailor were recovered Friday after going missing near San Clemente Island when their amphibious vehicle sank during a training mission last month.The remains were recovered during underwater salvage operations, the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force announced Friday evening. The remains will be transferred to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to be prepared for burial."Our hearts and thoughts of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit are with the families of our recovered Marines and Sailor," said Col. "We hope the successful recovery of our fallen warriors brings some measure of comfort."The U.S. military announced Tuesday it had located the amphibious assault vehicle that sank last week off the coast of San Diego County, killing nine young servicemen, and confirmed the presence of human remains where the vessel came to rest on the sea floor.The naval Undersea Rescue Command made the discovery near San Clemente Island on Monday using video systems remotely operated aboard the HOS Dominator, a merchant vessel whose crew specializes in undersea search and rescue.The amphibious troop-transport vehicle was en route to a waiting ship during a maritime training mission about 80 miles west of Encinitas when it foundered for unknown reasons about 5:45 p.m. July 30, according to Lt. A lawyer for Ismael "El Mayito Gordo" Zambada-Imperial says he pleaded not guilty to the charges in the federal court in San Diego and his next court hearing is scheduled for Feb. 7. Zambada-Imperial is accused of smuggling large quantities of cocaine and marijuana from Mexico to the United States, as well as the laundering of profits from the illegal drug trade. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A City Council committee Wednesday unanimously directed the City Attorney's office to draft an emergency declaration over a lack of shelter space, which has exacerbated a deadly outbreak of hepatitis A among San Diego's homeless population.A declaration regarding shelters is already in place. Councilman Chris Ward, who chairs the council's Select Committee on Homelessness, said a successor statement would be stronger and provide more benefits for the city.RELATED: San Diego adding 3 new homeless shelters, look to curb hepatitis A outbreak"Generally what this item is about is what we can do to potentially access additional funding with state or federal assistance ... what we can do to expedite permitting, reduce regulatory barriers and red tape -- so these facilities or other city-owned facilities can open up even faster -- and what can be done to expedite contracting with service providers and vendors."The City Attorney's office said an updated declaration would also provide legal protections to certain projects meant to alleviate homelessness, and allow for certain regulations -- such as building codes -- to be set aside if they hamper progress toward a solution.RELATED: San Diego Hepatitis A death toll, those sickened risesThe declaration, if later approved by the full City Council, comes amid an outbreak of hepatitis A, which has had a heavy impact on the homeless.
