Friday, March 1, the university will host a special birthday party for the author, which coincides with National Read Across America Day. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Board of Supervisors announced Monday that the county will close bars without a license to sell food ahead of the July 4 weekend in an effort to slow rising coronavirus cases.San Diego Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said the county will close all bars, wineries, and breweries that do not have a license to serve food. California took a similar stance with several counties over the weekend."Bars are purely social settings where different people and groups often mix. It's a simple reality that alcohol consumption impairs judgment and may lead to less compliance with physical distancing guidelines," Fletcher said. "People often spend more time in a bar than other establishments like a restaurant for eating."RELATED: Gov. Of those, two outbreaks were traced back to restaurants/bars. During Monday's press conference, the county wasn't able to specify how many of the region's total cases had visited bars.Fletcher added that the county is reinstating an order that alcohol can only be consumed while customers are simultaneous eating meals and can't be ordered alone. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Association of Governments will debate Wednesday the best way to get people to the airport. Four possible plans involving public transportation are involved. One would create a central terminal on Navy property near Old Town and tunnel under the airport with a people mover. Two other proposals would involve a terminal, but use an elevated people mover. The fourth option would extend the trolley, adding tracks along Harbor Drive. Dorene Robertson said the predictability of public transportation would be a benefit. “I know the shuttle's not going to get in a car accident, I know I'm going to get here when I plan to get here, I'm not going to get stuck on the freeway and not get here. So it takes away the uncertainty of getting to the airport on time,” said Robertson. Alex Santos, who typically relies on Uber to reach the airport, says he would only use public transportation if it was direct. “If it was dropping me off in front of my house or a townhome I live in, or a block away, that'd be perfect.” The SANDAG plans would cost anywhere from .8 billion to .7 billion dollars. They would serve as many as 44,000 people per day by 2050 and decrease traffic on Harbor Drive as much as 35 percent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego City Council on Tuesday unanimously voted in favor of a proposal to purchase two city hotels and used them to help hundreds of homeless San Diegans.City leaders want to turn the Residence Inn hotels in Kearny Mesa and Mission Valley to be turned into permanent housing. The proposal was approved in a 9-0 vote.The hotels are price tagged at a combined 6.5 million. The hotels can house 400 people experiencing homelessness; residences of the properties would include people staying at the Convention Center as part of the Operation Shelter to Home, which started in April due to the coronavirus pandemic.Father Joe’s Villages will be providing services for the Kearny Mesa location, while People Assisting the Homeless (PATH) will provide services at the Mission Valley location. The services provided will include mental and behavioral health services, healthcare services, substance use services, and employment assistance.City leaders hope to get people moved in and the services running by the end of the year. 1058

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The USS Midway Museum is celebrating 15 years in San Diego with a ticket discount offer for area residents. The deal announced Tuesday is rolling back admission to 2004 prices during the month of September. Tickets are for adults and seniors, and for youth and students. “Midway would not be the 5th most-popular American museum of any type (35,000 museums) if it were not for the nearly 800 San Diegans who donate more than 275,000 hours annually,” said founding president and CEO Mac McLaughlin. “They are the rock stars of Midway and the foundation of its success.” September marks the 74th anniversary of the USS Midway’s commissioning. The retired aircraft carrier opened as a museum in June 2004 after a 12-year campaign. The ship has been host to special events including an SDSU basketball game, an NFL pregame show, and episodes of The Bachelor and American Idol. The Midway is the most-visited ship museum in the world and the top-rated San Diego activity according to TripAdvisor, the museum reports.
