Throughout the past few decades, laws and regulations protecting the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer population have progressed quite a bit. “Several decades ago, transgender wasn’t a term,” transgender woman and LGBTQ advocate Laura Macwaters said. Macwaters says a lot has changed since the 70s and 80s. “Politicians wouldn’t talk to us,” said Macwaters. “They wouldn’t accept our money. We could be fired and kicked out, harassed and assaulted at will with hardly any protections.” Macwaters says she waited to share her true identity with others until she felt safe out in public. She honestly never thought the day would come. “It is just mind-bogglingly awesome to see all the things I never thought I would live to see. Never thought I’d live this long to begin with, much less live to see such an outwilling of support and love from people and acceptance,” Macwaters said. One organization that monitors the progression of LGBTQ rights and policies across the country is the 1027
Vencer Cotton may not have his sight, but he does have his skills and tool to help him get though everyday life. “I started using a cane at 5 and started using braille a couple years later,” Cotton says. Now, thanks to technology, Cotton gets even more help, especially when it comes to shopping. Cotton uses the video call-based service called Be My Eyes, which uses a volunteer helper on the other end, to assist him in shopping for specific items. The help on the other end of the line helps Cotton navigate stores to find the items he needs. The app hosts a network of over a million volunteers in 150 countries. It’s used by more than 100,000 people living with blindness or visual impairment. It's free to sign up to be a helper, and it’s free for people, like Cotton, to use if they need visual help. “They're very helpful for identifying packages or items in your cabinet or expiration dates on perishables in your refrigerator,” Cotton says. Cotton uses the app at least twice a week to help him while he's on the go. Rather than asking someone at the store for help, Cotton says this makes him feel more independent. It also helps him connect with people in a beneficial way for all. “Technology can in fact bring us closer together, rather than making us be farther apart,” he says. There are other paid versions of apps with similar capabilities, but Be My Eyes is free! Volunteers are needed. If interested in signing up, visit 1456

A container filled with 90,000 bottles of vodka believed to be for sanctions-hit North Korea has been seized by Dutch customs agents, officials said Tuesday.Three-thousand cases of the spirit were found by officers at the port of Rotterdam aboard a ship owned by China's Cosco Shipping, said Roul Velleman, a spokesman for the Dutch customs agency.Velleman said officers decided to check the container based on a "risk profile" provided by the Foreign Ministry."We follow a risk profile and we had information that this container could be carrying something," Velleman said. "And it was right. It was vodka -- destination China, probably to go to North Korea."North Korea has been slapped with a number of international sanctions, which include a ban on the import of certain luxury goods, for its continued ballistic missile testing and violations of UN resolutions. Those sanctions were the reason behind this particular seizure -- which was ordered by the Dutch minister for trade, Sigrid Kaag -- her spokesman said."The Security Council of the United Nations has imposed clear sanctions on North Korea, so it is important to enforce those sanctions," Kaag said, according to her spokesman, Jeroen van Dommelen."The sanctions also govern the import of luxury goods and so customs was completely justified in unloading that container."China, which is often highlighted as 1385
