(KGTV) - Supporters of Newland Sierra, a large housing development north of Escondido, launched their effort to rally voter support Friday at a press conference outside the Registrar of Voters.The project would build 2,135 homes on unincorporated land next to I-15 along Deer Springs Road. The design includes amenitites such as new parks and hiking trails, while touting that it preserves 60% of the land as open space. Newland also points out green innovations, such as solar panels on every home and electric car plug-ins in every garage. Most importantly, supporters say the homes are desperately needed to support families in North County.Opponents say the massive development would change the rural character of the area. They argue that traffic would be unbearable along Deer Springs Road and that evacuating during a wildfire would be dangerously slow. Newland counters that it will expand Deer Springs Road and that it includes a state-of-the-art fire plan. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Students at Classic Academy High School will return to school Tuesday without one of their own, who was tragically killed in a car accident over the weekend. Jonah Staebell died early Saturday morning when the truck he was riding in crashed. CHP officials say the accident happened at about 2:35 a.m. on Saturday on Summit Drive and Old Pasqual Road. Officers say seven teens were riding in a pick-up truck when the 18-year-old driver lost control and overturned. Five teens, including Staebell, were riding in the bed of the truck and all of them were ejected. Staebell died at the hospital. Staebell's principal, Dana Moen spoke to 10News Monday night. Moen remembered Jonah as a beloved student who did well in the classroom and in athletics. Moen says Staebell played football, lacrosse, and was a dancer. School officials tell 10News students officially go back to school on Tuesday and grief counselors will be on-site for as long as they're needed. According to Moen, the other teens involved in the accident were all treated at the hospital but have since been released. FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 55-year-old man died Monday afternoon following a crash in Fallbrook, according to California Highway Patrol.The agency said the crash happened on East Mission Road west of Red Mountain Dam Drive around 1:16 p.m.CHP said a 47-year-old woman driving a Mustang drifted to the left into oncoming traffic, striking a Toyota Tacoma driven by the 55-year-old man.The driver of the Tacoma was taken to the hospital where he later died. The driver of the Mustang was also taken to the hospital for major injuries, CHP said.Officers later determined that the driver of the Mustang was under the influence of a drug. She was arrested before being released into the care of Palomar Medical Center, CHP said.The crash is under investigation. 767

(KGTV) – Escondido Police have released bodycam footage of an officer-involved shooting that left one man hospitalized last month.EPD says the incident started with a 911 call about a restraining order violation at about 3:30 a.m. on Broadway near Washington Avenue on June 19. In the call, a woman said her former husband, 44-year-old Rosendo Sandoval Quezada, was at her home and she identified his vehicle.Officers were initially called to a home in the 300 block of Park Avenue, but an officer spotted Quezada's reported vehicle near Broadway, where he pulled him over.The full incident video can be viewed here.Police say Quezada exited his vehicle holding a 3-foot-long crowbar and ran toward the officer, identified as "Officer Hamilton." The officer said Quezada was yelling something similar to "just kill me, I want to die" as he charged him.Police say the officer continued to tell Quezada to stop before he fired one round from his service weapon when he came within a few feet of him. Quezada reportedly paused and continued toward the officer, police say.The officer attempted to fire a second round, but his gun malfunctioned, according to police.
