While politicians debate unemployment benefits, those who rent housing are hoping a deal is worked out soon. Experts say, so far, the COVID-19 pandemic hasn't impacted the housing industry, but that could soon change.Property managers are concerned the housing industry could see a repeat of the Great Recession from 2008.Michael Cohen is the owner of Asset Realty Management in Tennessee, which manages close to 900 properties. He says when the pandemic first hit in March, they started to see a major decline in vacancies and payments coming in. But when unemployment benefits started to kick in, things returned to normal.Cohen is worried now that enhanced unemployment benefits for millions of Americans have ended."Some people are still trying to dig their way out of that hole where they couldn’t pay for March and now we’re three months later and they’ve made major attempts to get caught up and here we go again. Definitely, I'm concerned about it," says Cohen.Jack Strauss is the Miller Chair of Applied Economics at the University of Denver. He says to prevent another housing crisis, eviction moratoriums need to continue along with additional unemployment benefits.“We care about evictions, not just for the family which is a personal tragedy in moving, but it could destroy the neighborhoods,” Strauss said. “You can be evicted from your house, these rental properties will remain unrented for long periods of time."Strauss says there are only about 5 million job openings across the country right now and 18 million people are unemployed."We already have a health problem. We don't want another severe economic problem in terms of evictions, in terms of unemployment people going hungry and homeless," says Strauss."I just keep waiting for this tsunami of lack of rent payments and people not being able to vacate and not being able to fill our vacancies and them staying vacant. Then once we get into the holidays, then things slow down even more," says Cohen.Strauss believes Congress will eventually come to an agreement and reissue some form of enhanced unemployment benefits to people. He hopes this next coronavirus stimulus bill really focuses on those who are suffering, including people of color, who Strauss says rent properties significantly more and are more than twice as likely to face evictions."This will even further hurt the Black family unit and Lanoti family unit, as well, if we don't have a moratorium. We need to help people of color because they're more likely to be hurt by a lapse in federal aid," says Strauss. 2559

When you decide to live in the desert, you most likely understand some of your neighbors will be scorpions.But, a Phoenix woman says her apartment complex near is being overrun by scorpions.She asked KNXV to get involved after she said the management of the Banyantree Apartment was not helping. "That's it when it was by the wall," said LaPorsha Jones, as she showed pictures of scorpions on her phone.Jones said she has lived in the complex since April, and has found dozens of scorpions on her own. She even sought out help from pest control workers on the property. She says they told her something shocking."He caught 1,052 [scorpions] and he said, that's not even half of them," Jones said.On top of the scorpions, we noticed more problems all across Jones's apartment.There was what appeared to be black mold in the bathroom, and more in the window sill in the living room. She pointed out brown water leaking from her refrigerator, and told us she got sick from using the tap water to cook. She now uses only bottled water. Jones said she had asked management to fix all of these issues, as well as the scorpions, but nothing has been resolved.So, our reporter walked into the office and asked for the manager.A woman sitting at the front desk went to get her, but about a minute later there was a major change in tone. That same woman told our crew there would be no interview. They gave us a number to call for a comment, but after calling and leaving a voicemail, no one ever returned our calls for answers.So, we took action and went above their head to get help for this woman. When it comes to saving lives, seconds count. And now, thanks to improving technology, drones are proving to be a game changer in an emergency.Dozens of people’s lives were saved last year with the help of drones, according to drone maker DJI.  The company said from May of 2017 to April of 2018, 65 people were rescued with the help of a drone. DJI reviewed media reports to come up with that number and included documentation in its recent report released this year.Firefighters, search and rescue teams and other members of law enforcement are using drones to survey an area much faster from the air than people can on the ground.“During a search and rescue operation we can see body temperature, Romeo Durscher, DJI’s Public Safety Integration Director, said.Drones carry more than simple cameras. They are now built to send back infrared images.Aeryon Defense USA, of Denver, has drones that can carry upwards of four pounds of payload. The company sells drones that can be used by police agencies and the military."That allows you to hook in a medical kit, radio, food, water (or) ammunition to provide life sustaining equipment," said Mark Holden of Aeryon Defense USA. “We can carry water, enough for one day, food, even ammunition resupplies and some explosives as well.”The company’s drones can also be programed to single out a person moving in the camera’s view, but ignore a tree blowing in the wind or wildlife.“This is just the beginning. Everything we do is about taking the load off the end user. We want to replace human functions on the battlefield with a robot,” Holden said.Drones have helped find a woman with dementia in Randolph County, North Carolina. She had wandered into a nearby field. Drones dropped a life preserver to flood victims in Sichuan, China before rescue crews arrived to save the victims. An infrared camera-equipped drone located a crash victim who became unconscious after leaving his car to get help. A similar camera also was used to locate lost tubers on a river in Vestavia Hills, Alabama.Technology allows drones to carry more weight than before. In the last one-and-a-half to two years, drone makers have improved how drones fly in difficult weather conditions."Search and rescue operations rarely happen on a beautiful, no wind kind of day so we had to design them to withstand the snow, the wind, and the rain,” Durscher said.They can help save the lives of rescuers too."You know what's ahead of you.
