SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) — A 99-year-old local man who survived Pearl Harbor was honored this week and shared his memories about the attack.Retired Marine Corps Captain John Campbell, 99, was honored at a luncheon in Solana Beach on Friday where he spoke about the attack 78 years ago. Campbell, one of only a handful of Pearl Harbor survivors today, recalled the confusion when Japanese planes began bombing the Hawaiian naval base in the early hours of Dec. 7, 1941."We thought originally it was the Army-Navy maneuvers ... then we saw our airplanes catch fire," Campbell said. "We had no idea and you're still stunned probably to the next day trying to figure out what it is."The surprise of the attack levying everyone on the Hawaiian base overwhelmed and anxious."The first night in Pearl Harbor, you didn't dare light a cigarette because everyone was so trigger happy and they'd shoot before they even thought about it," Campbell said.RELATED: Post Office in Poway to be named after Pearl Harbor survivorThe veteran says he was thankful the attack didn't continue further, noting the base would've been incapable of fighting back at that point."We had no airplanes. The ships were out of duty ... they were still burning," Campbell said. "Those carriers are like cities, when they go down they can burn for years."Campbell recalls facing the enemy in the surprise raid."It was 8 o'clock sharp and they made four runs on us ... You could see the gold in their teeth, they were smiling," Campbell recalled. "And we didn't know what the hell was happening."Campbell's family wouldn't know whether or not he survived the attack for two days.RELATED: Just 1 of 3 living Pearl Harbor survivors will attend ceremony"It took me two days to get through [to my family]," Campbell said. "Everyone was pretty jumpy for a week or so. They thought that the Japanese were going to follow up on their attack."Since the attack, Campbell says he's lived a fulfilling life working in various executive positions at ABC stations and owner of amusement parks in Florida. "I've been lucky all my life ... I even became the president of a television network. I owned my own theme parks ... I can't complain. I really had a fantastic life," Campbell said.Campbell was one of around 50,000 service members who were at Pearl Harbor during the attack. More than 2,400 Americans were killed during the raid that prompted the U.S. to enter World War II."The service is a camaraderie. Especially when you're under fire you're really close to your buddies. SOLANA BEACH (KGTV) - The heat wave is creating a stomach-turning sight at some of San Diego's North County Beaches.Water temperatures near 80 degrees are keeping local beaches packed. Lili Waters spends a lot of time at Table Top Beach, just north of Fletcher Cove, in Solana Beach. Tuesday was not the perfect beach day she expected."Normally, this is a really nice beach, but it's been absolutely horrible today," said Waters.She noticed an unusual amount of kelp and flies along the shoreline."Then, I looked down and I was like, hey, kids there's maggots all over the ground and they're like what, I said look down there's maggots and then they started running," said Waters.Seagulls are feeding on the maggots which are all over the beach near the piles of kelp."It's pretty disgusting," said Waters.What's disgusting to beachgoers is actually important to the marine life."As the kelp breaks down, the flies create larvae, and then the birds eat the larvae, the larvae is washed into the ocean, the fish eat the larvae it creates nutrients and food for shore birds," said San Diego Lifeguard Captain Jason Shook.Shook said the heat is killing the kelp which is attracting flies. Beaches from Torrey Pines to Carlsbad may see large piles of kelp wash up during the summer months."Those large reefs trap the kelp and then the kelp washes a shore in that area," said Captain Shook.Some visitors complained to lifeguards, but there's little they can do."It happens generally in the warmer months and it usually coincides with the grunion season, which is March through the end of August. So, then we are restricted on our beach-raking areas. We are not allowed to rake the beach along the high tide line so the kelp will build up a little bit," said Captain Shook."There's a ton of seaweed. It's all wrapping around your feet when you're in there, like I said, it's horrible," said Waters.Although it's unpleasant for visitors, it's important to the food chain."Some people don't want to be bothered by the kelp when they go to the beach. They don't like the smell, and the stuff that it brings along like the larvae, but it is a natural occurrence," said Captain Shook. "It's a really fragile ecosystem that we need to respect." 2275

Something you can't see with the naked eye could be the keeping an eye on you in your most private moments.Illegally hidden cameras are getting harder to detect each day.At her request, we have concealed the identity of a Central Florida woman who found a hidden camera installed in a fan sitting on a table in her home."Well right now it's making me very paranoid because I feel like there could be more devices," said the woman.  She is sharing her story to warn others.There are already plenty of other warnings out there in our state as well.In October 2017, a couple found a hidden camera in a smoke detector in their Airbnb room in Longboat Key.In March 2016, a mother said she found a hidden camera in a West Kendall restaurant bathroom.The demand for hidden cameras, and help finding them, keep private investigator Jody Stacy busy at his Delray Beach store."You got to think if they're finding one device, how many did they miss? Again, it's getting cheaper, smaller and more effective," said Stacy.Stacy went on to say, "Pretty much anything can hold a hidden camera. A stuffed animal, a clock, something as small as a phone charger. Finding the camera can be a challenge."The woman in Central Florida felt like someone she knew, knew too much about her private life."I feel like he can hear everything I'm talking about and everything I say," said the woman.She hired a private investigator, who found the camera in a fan.For about one hundred bucks, you can use a handheld device to spot hidden camera lenses and radio frequencies.  Stacy said, "Everything has to have a crystal or a lens in it like the smoke detectors or stuff like that so if you went through it... it would reflect and you'd see like a little red light and it would tell you there's a camera in it." 1814
