SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - The sound of illegal fireworks in the San Diego area is not uncommon around the Fourth of July, but there is an increase in activity this year. San Diego Police Department Sergeant Matthew Botkin said from May 21 to June 21, 2019, the SDPD received 37 calls regarding illegal firework reports. During that same time period in 2020, there were 236 calls.Related: Fireworks continue boom in New York as residents wonder why the noise“I was sleeping, it was like 12 midnight, 1 a.m. and I heard explosions kinda close to my window,” said Stina Pezze, a Mission Beach resident.Jamie Young, a Pacific Beach resident, also has heard them at night, saying she’s lived in the area for 16 years and is used to the typical occasional illegal fireworks around the summer holiday, but this year has been much worse and started earlier.“They started easily a couple weeks ago and it would just be random weeknights we’d get woken up by them at 2 in the morning,” said Young.Neighbors are chiming in online asking where they’re coming from and why there seem to be more. Sergeant Botkin said the simple answer is that they don’t know."I'm not quite sure why the increase, I don’t have a reason why that’s the case but there’s certainly an uptick in them and we hope they go down," he said, also pointing out the difficulty in issuing citations. “We’re always more attentive this time of year to calls like this but you can imagine it’s really kinda difficult to nail down where these are coming from unless it’s coming out of your backyard."He noted that neighbors play a key role in reporting people using fireworks because citing specific locations makes police response easier. He also mentioned how dangerous fireworks can be, with 180 people across the country going to the hospital every day for firework-related injuries around this time of year. SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) -- While many sports have made their return during the COVID-19 pandemic, bowling alleys have remained closed.The Mira Mesa Lanes have been a very important part of the Mira Mesa community for years. The bowling alley off Mira Mesa Boulevard has been known for their special needs and senior leagues, and as a spot for youth bowlers to enjoy the game with family and friends.Those who love the Lanes hope it has not seen its last strike."They have probably the biggest, or the second biggest, youth program in the state. We also have a couple of national champions that bowl there," said Marci Greim, who has started a "Save Mira Mesa Lanes" GoFundMe page.Greim, a mother of two young bowlers, said Mira Mesa Lanes has always been a big advocate of college."The kids, just by participating in leagues, have a portion of their dues set aside for college scholarship money. Then, when the kids do well in tournaments, or other things like that, they are earning college scholarship money. Mira Mesa Lanes has just always welcomed the youth bowlers,” said Greim.Mira Mesa Lanes shut down on March 16 due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. They reopened for a few weeks in June, but state restrictions forced them to shut down once again.The alley has been closed ever since."So, they are really on the brink," said Greim. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --The FDA has placed new restrictions on a controversial birth control device called Essure.  The maker of the implant, Bayer, will only be allowed to sell to providers who agree to fully inform women about the risks and side effects.  A San Diego woman who had the Essure implant is now suing the physician who performed the procedure.  She says she wasn't given enough information and wants to warn others about her experience.  Three months after Essure was implanted she began experiencing severe pain. She eventually had a full hysterectomy.   603

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Patients were reunited with the men and women who care for them on Saturday at The Heart Institute at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego. The event marked the 34th annual Heart Party. Hundreds of young heart patients and their families showed up for games, gifts and fun. Upstairs, doctors and nurses were caring for a couple newborns who had received heart transplants. For one baby to receive a heart, another has to give it. At just four months old, Zoey has taken part in the Lifesharing program.  553
