At Uptown Wines, Beer & Spirits, sales have surged since the COVID-19 crisis started and are expected to rise even more during the holidays.“Last time I’ve seen sales like this, it would be considered New Year’s, Thanksgiving and Halloween night,” said beer specialist Wiley Deerman.Deerman says with more people quarantined at home many started stocking up on alcohol to-go.“We’ve seen a lot of these half-sized bottles, the sales have increased on those,” he said.Now, new research from Vanderbilt University shows not only are more people drinking alcohol and abusing other drugs during the pandemic, but that this increase could create new addicts as well.“You’re seeing an increase in drinking, in drug use in people at home. When the pandemic’s over, this isn’t going to go away," said Erin Calipari, Ph.D., with the Vanderbilt Center for Addiction Research.Calipari’s team conducted the study, which shows addiction triggers during the COVID-19 crisis could make the holiday season even worse for many adults struggling with sobriety.To help fight this problem, Calipari says America needs the same kind of investment in battling addiction as is being put into solving the pandemic.“Addiction kills just as many people as the pandemic has this year and we haven’t done the same thing,” she said. “We’ve kind of, you know, funded it a little bit but we haven’t had this community investment and this kind of global revelation that this is a problem that we should be solving.”Without proper attention, Calipari predicts addiction cases will continue to increase across the country, even after there’s a cure for COVID-19.“This isn’t going to go away when we get the vaccine or solve the pandemic,” she said. “This is going to be a kind of long-term problem that we’re going to have to deal with as a society.”A very costly problem both in money and human lives.That’s why Deerman’s business focuses on more than making a buck, saying the best way to serve his community is to sometimes actually not serve them at all.“There’s times where we have to say, ‘Look, I think you need to cut back, take it easy. we care about you,’” he said.Care about stopping an addiction before it even starts. 2203

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Medical Association has created a handy chart to help Americans determine how risky everyday activities are when it comes to contracting the novel coronavirus.From opening the mail to going to a bar, TMA’s COVID-19 Task Force and Committee on Infectious Diseases have ranked activities on their risk level for COVID-19.The activities are broken down into these levels: low risk, low-moderate risk, moderate risk, moderate-high risk, and high risk.TMA says the levels are based on input from the physician members of the task force and the committee, who worked from the assumption that – no matter the activity – participants were taking as many safety precautions as they can.No matter the activity, TMA says it’s best if you stay home if possible, wear a mask and maintain at least 6 feet of distance when you have to go out, and practice safe hand hygiene.TMA’s task force is made up of 15 physicians who are experts and leaders in medicine, some of whom are in direct patient care.The task force has researched and written in the neighborhood of 25 whitepapers and guidance documents to help inform Texas physicians as they battle the COVID-19 coronavirus. As school districts across the country prepare to send kids back to school in-person, many bus drivers are voicing concerns about the potential for COVID-19 to spread on school buses, where oftentimes social distancing is nearly impossible.For the better part of 32 years, Cheryl Merritt has driven a school bus in Hanover, Massachusetts. She has driven in every kind of weather condition imaginable, but this is the first year she’ll be driving a bus during a pandemic.“I just want all the kids on the bus to stay safe and the drivers to stay safe. If we have a driver who gets sick, they’re going to be out for at least 14 days,” she lamented, as she turned her bus onto a side street in a residential New England town.Merritt’s concerns are shared by school bus drivers and districts across the country. Many school bus drivers have retired from other professions, meaning their age makes them more susceptible to catching the virus.“I don’t want this, I don’t. I’m not ready to die,” the 61-year-old Merritt said.School buses are presenting a particularly difficult challenge as districts try to send kids back to the classroom. When fully loaded with kids, most school buses fit about 77 students. Cramming students into a bus though would be a perfect place for COVID-19 to spread, so many states are advising bus companies to have only one student per bench. But taking some bus capacity down to about 12 kids means school districts would need to run double or triple the number of trips each day just to pick every child up.Transportation experts say adding more buses would be nearly impossible given a nationwide bus driver shortage, which existed long before the outbreak.“It doesn’t matter what you’re gonna do with kids once you get them to school, you have to get them there first,” explained David Strong, who works with the School Transportation Association of Massachusetts.Strong’s other concern is that kids won’t adhere to social distancing guidelines or mask-wearing requirements once they get onto a bus.“There’s almost no way to realistically social distance on a bus,” he added.To address concerns about the spread of COVID, many school districts are mandating that school buses keep their windows open year-round to help with the flow of air. Some districts are also adding bus monitors to ensure kids, especially elementary school students, are following new guidelines.As for Merritt, she sees herself and other bus drivers as the first line of defense when it comes to keeping COVID-19 out of the classroom.“When you stop to pick up a child look at them, make sure they don’t look sickly or they’re coughing,” she said. 2655

AURORA, Colo. – The Aurora City Council unanimously adopted a resolution Monday, calling for an independent investigation into Elijah McClain’s death.The resolution calls for a three-member independent investigation team that will have at least three consultants and will be led by Jonathan Smith of the Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs in Washington, D.C.The team will include consultants who have expertise in independent investigations, law enforcement and public safety accountability, civil rights, use of force, police and EMT training and criminal justice.The city council’s Public Safety, Courts and Civil Service Committee had said just last week they were still working to find a medical expert who can speak to the use of ketamine on McClain and at least one other person.The team of investigators, once formed, will “commence its work immediately and shall complete its investigation as expeditiously as possible,” according to language included in the resolution.The team would then issue a written report to the city council, present its findings to the council in a public meeting, and make the report public. The report will include recommendations to the city on the McClain incident as well as future best practices the police, fire and EMT departments should implement.McClain, 23, was unarmed when he was encountered by Aurora police on Aug. 24, 2019. Police put McClain in a carotid hold, which limits blood flow to the brain, after stopping him while he was walking home. When he became unresponsive, paramedics gave him ketamine, police have said.The officers involved in McClain's death were not arrested or charged, despite continued calls for justice from McClain's family and supporters, along with calls for an independent investigation.Aurora city leaders in June said a Connecticut attorney was leading a third-party investigation into the McClain incident. But city councilmembers Alison Hiltz, Curtis Gardener, and Angela Lawson argued that the attorney, a former police officer who has worked closely with police departments, could not provide an independent review. The city cut ties with the attorney before moving forward with the current investigation.In June, as McClain's death garnered national interest, Gov. Jared Polis appointed Attorney General Phil Weiser to investigate the officers' actions. At least three people have died, including an alleged gunman, after gunfire erupted at a home in Port St. Lucie in southeastern Florida. Officers on scene said a chilling 911 call came in Monday afternoon, a girl said someone was inside her house shooting people.At about 1:15 p.m. ET Monday, the city’s police department advised the public to stay away from the scene on Morningside Blvd. near Morningside Elementary School. Around 3:30 p.m. ET, officers reported a man and 13-year-old girl found at the home had died. Two others found at the scene were taken to a nearby hospital. An officer was injured, and is expected to be OK. A SWAT Team then made entry into the home and found the suspected shooter dead in an upstairs bedroom. Police say it was a dispute about the alleged gunman's dog that started the incident. 830
