SUNLAND (CNS) - Firefighters Friday used a helicopter to hoist a horse to safety after the animal became stranded down a hillside on private property in Sunland.Rescuers were sent to the 11300 block of North Oro Vista Avenue shortly before 7 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.The 30-year-old male horse, named Sunny, apparently was not injured, but was lying on the ground, and efforts to help him to his feet were unsuccessful, the LAFD reported.A helicopter was brought in, a veterinarian medicated Sunny, and the 800- to 900-pound horse was airlifted on a sling about 10 a.m. to safe ground, where he was to be examined for possible injury. 668

Federal prison officials in Terre Haute, Indiana, on Thursday, executed a Texas street-gang member for his role in the 1999 slayings of an Iowa religious couple. The case of 40-year-old Brandon Bernard was a rare execution of a person who was in his teens when his crime was committed. Bernard was pronounced dead at 9:27 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday, the AP reported.He was 18 when he and four other teenagers abducted and robbed Todd and Stacie Bagley on their way from a Sunday service in Killeen, Texas. Sunday night's episode of "The Simpsons" took on the controversy over a character, and not everyone thought the response was funny.Comedian Hari Kondabolu's documentary "The Problem with Apu" debuted last November and looked at the show's character Apu Nahasapeemapetilon as a negative, stereotypical representation of South Asians.Nahasapeemapetilon is an Indian-American character who operates the Kwik-E-Mart convenience store in the fictional town of Springfield. The character is voiced by actor Hank Azaria, who is not South Asian.In his doc, Kondabolu interviewed several big name celebrities of South Asian descent, including Aziz Ansari and Kal Penn, to discuss how characterizations like Apu can be viewed as a form of racism.On Sunday night's episode of "The Simpsons," mother Marge Simpson is seen reading a book to her daughter Lisa in which she refers to the heroine as a "cisgender girl" and tries to modernize the action.Lisa notes that the character as such is "already evolved" and "doesn't really have an emotional journey to complete," so as such there's "no point" to the book.Marge asks, "Well what am I supposed to do?" and Lisa's response was clearly meant to be one to the Apu controversy."It's hard to say. TELLER COUNTY, Colo. – A two-day search of the home of Kelsey Berreth’s fiancé in Florissant, Colorado turned up no sign of the missing woman, Chief of Police Miles J. De Young said Sunday.About 75 people from multiple jurisdictions searched the 35-acre home of Patrick Frazee Saturday, hoping to find any new clues that would provide answers into the Woodland Park, Colorado woman’s mysterious disappearance. Frazee, who has not been ruled out as a suspect in the case, continues to cooperate with police during the investigation, according to his lawyer.“We still have not found Kelsey,” De Young said in the latest press release from law enforcement.The search, which at one point involved the help of a backhoe, was completed Saturday and the property was turned over to Frazee.Investigators are continuing to conduct interviews as De Young stressed the case “remains our number one priority.”Details about what investigators were searching for at the home have not been released. 1022
