LONG BEACH (CNS) - A crane toppled over and struck a house in Long Beach Monday, injuring a homeowner who was hit by debris.Crews were working on overhead lines about 12:30 p.m. in the 300 block of 61st Street when the crane fell between two houses, striking the rear portion of one of the homes, according to Long Beach Fire Department Capt. Jack Crabtree.The injured homeowner, who had been working outside when the crane fell, was conscious and in stable condition when taken to a hospital, the captain said.The street was closed between Elm and DeForest avenues as crews worked to dismantle the crane. 613

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rafer Johnson, who won the decathlon at the 1960 Rome Olympics and helped subdue Robert F. Kennedy's assassin in 1968, has died. He was 86. Family friend Michael Roth says Johnson died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles. No cause was announced. Johnson was among the world's greatest athletes from 1955 through his Olympic triumph in 1960. The Associated Press reported Johnson won a national decathlon championship in 1956 and a silver medal at the Melbourne Olympics that same year.He lit the torch at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. In June 1968, Johnson was with Kennedy at a hotel in Los Angeles when the senator was shot by Sirhan Sirhan. Johnson, along with former NFL star Rosey Grier and journalist George Plimpton, helped in subduing the shooter. LONG BEACH (CNS) - A woman was killed early Monday afternoon by a man who used a scooter to assault her on a street in Long Beach.Officers responded about 12:30 p.m. to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 6400 block of North Obispo Avenue, according to Long Beach Police Department Public Information Officer Shaunna Dandoy.``The victim is believed to be a female adult who was walking eastbound towards Obispo and 64th (Street)'' when a man ran up and began assaulting her, Dandoy said.A bystander tried to help, at which time the suspect grabbed a scooter and used it to continue attacking the woman, according to Dandoy.The suspect was last seen running west from the location on foot. Fire department personnel responded and pronounced the woman dead at the scene, Dandoy said. Her name and age were not immediately available.Homicide detectives were investigating the fatal assault. 910

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Deputies arrested a 13-year-old boy and seized a semi-automatic rifle after he threatened to shoot other students and staff at a Los Angeles-area middle school, authorities said Friday.In a separate case, a boy at another school was taken into custody involving a planned shooting.The arrests came barely a week after deputies were frantically summoned to a high school in Santa Clarita, where a 16-year-old boy killed two fellow students and took his own life.Since then, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has investigated at least 30 school threats, spokesman Sgt.
