SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The man who attacked a teenage Syrian refugee on a San Diego trolley pleaded guilty Monday. Adrian Vergara, 26, was arrested Oct. 22 on an unrelated misdemeanor drug charge. While he was in custody, he was recognized in connection to the ongoing hate crime investigation. The 17-year-old boy was beaten on a Metropolitan Transit System car Oct. 15. Representatives for the Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans (PANA), who spoke on the teen's behalf, told 10News the teen was speaking Arabic while on FaceTime with a friend when a man on the trolley asked him, "Where are you from? According to the teen, the man then started punching him and cursing while using racial slurs. The victim left the trolley at the 62nd Street station in Encanto. Vergara pleaded guilty to assault and hate crime charges. As part of the plea deal, Vergara will be sentenced December 5 to five years in prison. 1051

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The former head of the Poway Unified School District appeared in court Monday for a preliminary hearing on five felony charges.Officials charged John Collins with misappropriating and misuse of public money.The complaint accuses Collins of misappropriation of public money dealing with vacation time and sick leave. Poway Unified fired Collins in 2017 after a scathing audit had alleged he received more than 0,000 in overpayments and unauthorized payments.The audit also claims there were an additional ,000 in other transactions that violated district policy and some questionable purchases for airline tickets, dinners and hotel fees.Collins attorney did not respond to 10News request for a comment, but in the past, Collins denied engaging in conduct that was dishonest.If convicted on all charges, Collins could face more than seven years behind bars. 894

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The attorney for Rebecca Zahau’s family spoke Friday about the San Diego County Sheriff Department’s new review of her death at the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado.Earlier in the day, Sheriff Bill Gore announced that investigators found no evidence that she “died at the hands of another”. The department will not reopen the case.Zahau’s body was found hanging a the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado in 2011. Her wrists and feet were bound. For years, there has been speculation about the nature of her death, which was originally determined to be a suicide.Zahau family attorney Keith Greer suggested Friday afternoon that the Sheriff’s investigators are corrupt. “It’s not a logical decision. There’s something here that’s motivating these folks to do the wrong thing,” he told 10News. “I don’t know how they look at themselves in the mirror,” he added. Greer said that a rational person would not look at the evidence and believe that Zahau’s death was a suicide. The Zahau family lives in Missouri and did not want to be involved in Friday’s briefing at the Sheriff’s Department. They did release a recent photo of Zahau’s gravesite, surrounded by snow and flowers.Greer said he and the family are disappointed in the Sheriff’s Department, especially after a jury recently ruled in the family’s favor during the civil case. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Border Patrol says it has experienced a major uptick in violence at the border since the arrival of the migrant caravan. Assaults against agents are up 300 percent compared to this time last year, according to San Diego Border Sector Chief Rodney Scott.An agent was struck in the face shield with a rock thrown at the border on New Year’s Eve and was not injured. “These incursions are organized they are bringing people down there for the express purpose of provoking a confrontation,” said Border Patrol agent Joshua Wilson. RELATED: Mexico urges thorough probe into border tear gas incidentWilson is also the executive vice president of the local Border Patrol agent union in San Diego and says the incidents are indicative of why they need more border wall funding. “Having that barrier helps prevent many assaults on agents and that's something the public really needs to understand,” said Wilson, “It’s not just a border security measure it’s a measure for agents safety as well.” Border Angels director and founder Enrique Morones says his group doesn’t condone any violence at the border but he doesn’t believe it’s the immigrants instigating things. “If you’re going to be going across the border to seek asylum, why in the world would you be throwing rocks at the border patrol,” said Morones. “The people… have been reacting to the Border Patrol violence of teargassing and shooting rubber bullets at migrants.” Border Patrol officials say they do not release official statistics from the specific sector level, hence the percentage. 1575
