SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Security is tight at San Diego's mosques following an arson attack at a mosque in Escondido early Sunday morning. Someone set fire to the Islamic Center of Escondido on West Sixth Avenue around 3 a.m, but a handful of worshippers was inside, and the group put out the fire before it caused any significant damage. When police arrived, they found a message in graffiti referencing the recent shootings at mosques in New Zealand. Monday afternoon, two San Diego Police Department patrol cars sat in the parking lot of the Islamic Center of San Diego. Directors say worshipers are nervous. "They accept the faith of what happened, others are very, you know, worried as well. It's a mixed mood," said Khelil Ouznali, vice chair of the board of directors. The center already has surveillance cameras all over the property and guards on duty, but now the directors are considering hiring armed guards. "We are looking into improving security, you know, we are looking into different options based on the feedback from our community," said Ouznali. On the campus of San Diego State University Monday, dozens of students rallied against hate. They marched through the student union chanting, "No hate at state, Muslims are here to stay, no hate at state, Muslims are here to stay!" Faduma Mohamed is a member of the Muslim Student Association. "It just goes to show there's a lot of hate against us, but although some people can attempt to destroy Muslims, Islam itself the religion, cannot be destroyed," said Mohamed. The group posted pictures of the lives lost in the shooting rampages at the mosques in New Zealand and the attack at a Jewish Synagogue in Pittsburgh. "It doesn't matter what race, religion or color you are, every human life matters and we share a common denominator of a soul and spirit and that they should take part in respecting these people whose lives were lost," said Mohamed. 1926

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 16-year-old was hospitalized Saturday night after being shot at a gas station in Skyline. Police say the shooting happened at an Arco station near South Meadow Brooke and Paradise Valley Road. According to police, the victim and his friends were walking through the parking lot when one of them was shot. Witnesses told police an argument broke out between the victim and three other teens when one of the three boys, who are all under the age of 18, shot the 16-year-old in the stomach before running away. The 16-year-old was taken to the hospital where he is expected to survive. 613

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Carmel Valley family who moved from Parkland, Florida is upset after learning two Parkland victims died of apparent suicides.Erin George says these suicides in her hometown are re-opening old wounds. It has her wondering how many more lives will be lost due to the senseless tragedy. She said, “I was numb. I just thought when does the loss of life stop from this.”Erin’s daughter Lauren lost a friend in the shootings. She worries about the emotional impact the shootings will have on her daughter.Suicide prevention experts say the best thing you can do is look for warning signs and talk to your teenagers. Simply ask them if they have thought about suicide. They say the best time to talk about it is when they are not depressed. Warning signs include a drastic change in behavior or withdrawing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A cold-case murder shrouded in mystery for decades just led investigators across the country, straight to a San Diego man. In June of 1984, 15-year-old Reesa Trexler was found naked, raped and stabbed to death in her grandparents' home in Salisbury, outside Charlotte, N.C. For more than 35 years there were few answers. Last year, Trexler's younger sister, Jodie Laird, appeared on the Dr. Phil show to quash long-held speculation that she was the killer. On the show, she took and passed a polygraph test.RELATED: 40-year-old San Diego cold case solved with help of genealogical databaseThis week, an emotional scene unfolded for her and other family as Salisbury police announced the case was solved. The big break was DNA evidence uploaded to a public genealogy website, which pointed to a suspect. According to search warrants obtained by WBTV, the suspect was Curtis Edward Blair, who was still living in San Diego when he died of heart failure in 2004. His body was exhumed from his grave in North Carolina for DNA samples, before police closed the case. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A child suffered severe injuries from a pit bull attack Monday in Logan Heights.The child was bitten on Irving Avenue around 2:30 p.m., according to the San Diego Police Department.Paramedics took the child to Rady Children’s Hospital to be treated for head lacerations and a possible puncture to the eye.20-month-old “Ookie” the pit bull was impounded by Animal Control officers. The dog was relinquished for euthanasia by its owner.According to the infant's adult sister, the 2-month-old has a cracked cranium and possibly a punctured eye socket. Witnesses say group was in the backyard when the dog licked then bit the infant's face. The owner of the dog reportedly had to pry the dog's jaw off the baby.  745
