SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A woman was left laying in a gutter with a broken pelvis in Pacific Beach after a vehicle hit her and fled the scene Friday.San Diego Police say the 27-year-old woman was walking in the area of 4300 Ingraham St. at about 11:30 p.m. when a vehicle traveling northbound hit her. The vehicle fled the scene, leaving the woman in a gutter on the street when officers arrived, SDPD said.RELATED: Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run near Brown Field in Otay MesaThe woman was taken to the hospital with a fractured pelvis and multiple abrasions.There was no description of the vehicle, according to police. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A second person has died and three children remain hospitalized after a fire tore through a Logan Heights home Sunday morning. The family’s oldest son told 10News his mother and father, who he identified as Nicolasa Mayo and Jose Romero, were killed in the fire. His two younger sisters and brother remain in the hospital following the blaze. The 26-year-old says he awoke Sunday morning to find his bed on fire. The man tells 10News he tried yelling at his family to get out of the home. "My dogs were jumping on me, trying to wake me up. I woke up. When I woke up, my bed was on fire. I jumped out of bed and started screaming the house is on fire," said Wilber Romero.The fire started around 4:30 Sunday morning on the 3100 block of Clay Street. "The minute I stepped out of my restroom, my house on the inside felt warm, like really warm. The curtain was open and I looked across the neighbors house was just bursting in flames," said Maria Orona, who lives nearby. According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, firefighters had to go inside the home to pull many of the victims out. One witness who was nearby when the fire started told 10News he could see one of the victims reaching through bars in the windows, unable to escape.At least three fire engines and dozens of firefighters responded to the blaze.At this time, it’s unclear what sparked the fire, but the metro arson strike team was called to the home to investigate.A GoFundMe has been set up for the family to help cover funeral expenses. 1541

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A small portion of San Diego State students will return to campus next week for limited in-person classes.The university says students who are taking in-person classes are required to be tested for COVID-19 at least every 14 days. This includes both students living on-campus and those taking in-person courses.Students and instructors on campus are also required to wear a facial covering at all times (with limited exceptions), maintain physical distancing, and have their temperatures checked daily.There will be two temperature check kiosks on campus and instructors will also have the ability to check a student's temperature using a non-contact infrared thermometer.Since the fall semester started, SDSU has reported 1,134 coronavirus cases among students, including 408 on-campus students and 726 off-campus students. Ten faculty or staff and 13 visitors have also reportedly tested positive.To combat off-campus cases from rising in the surrounding College Area, the school has enforced its COVID-19 student policy on students living off-campus as well. Students or organizations found in violation of SDSU's policies, like failing to wear face coverings or attending social gatherings, could face student organization sanctions and individual disciplinary action, which may include expulsion. 1328

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An inmate at R.J. Donovan State Prison has filed a lawsuit against the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.Anand Jon Alexander filed the complaint on Monday, alleging prison officials failed to keep him safe and to provide adequate medical care after he was assaulted behind bars.In the complaint, Alexander claims he was attacked by another inmate while waiting to make a phone call on May 18, 2019. He was allegedly stabbed multiple times in the face and kicked on the ground.After the attack he sustained “five facial fractures, a lower orbital floor blowout, sinus and nasal fractures, a deviated septum, a 50% abrasion to the right cornea, long term impairment of his vision and respiration, serious nerve damage, PTSD” according to the complaint.Alexander is 12 years in to a 59 year sentence after he was convicted of rape in 2008.An up and coming fashion designer, Alexander had been featured on “America’s Next Top Model” and was listed in Newsweek’s “Who’s Next in 2007.”But his career was put on hold after being accused by multiple women of sexual assault.Many of the charges were dropped, but he was convicted on one count of rape and 15 other counts following a trial in Los Angeles. The jury found him not guilty or were hung on several other counts.Alexander has maintained his innocence. In the complaint, his lawyer writes he “has acknowledged the existence of blurred lines between his personal and professional relationships…Nevertheless, he holds steadfast to his innocence.”The American Justice Alliance, a group which seeks to free prisoners who have been wrongfully convicted, submitted an amicus brief to the Federal Central District Court.In it, they wrote Alexander “was targeted by a collusion of disgruntled business associates and some former girlfriends, who have admitted they were out to “bring him down,” and “get revenge,” seeking notoriety and monetary benefits. He was then subject to a prosecution and trial riddled with extraordinary police misconduct.”The lawsuit names CDCR as well as Marcus Pollard, the Warden of R.J. Donovan Correctional Facility and Daniel Paramo, the former Warden.It alleges prison officials failed to protect Alexander from harm and after he was injured gave “deliberate indifference to Mr. Alexander’s medical condition.”They are seeking unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial.So far, no criminal charges have been filed against the assailant. 10News reached out to CDCR for comment but had not heard back before the story was published. 2557

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After 27 years, Mysterious Galaxy, a popular sci-fi bookstore in the Clairemont area, may have to close its doors.In a post on the store's website, the owners say they are looking for a buyer to take over the store on Balboa Avenue and move it, as their lease expires in 60 days. "It is with heavy hearts that we share that unless a new buyer and new location are found immediately, Mysterious Galaxy will be forced to close its doors," reads the post.Manager Kelly Orazi says it's "devastating" to see the store shut down.RELATED: Sears, Kmart stores slated for closure in months ahead, company says"We're a hub for people who love books," she says.
