BUCHAREST, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping arrived here on Sunday to start his official visit to Romania after he concluded a visit to Hungary.     In a written statement upon his arrival at the airport, Xi said China and Romania have enjoyed long-term friendship, and they have enhanced political trust, cooperation in various areas, and coordination in dealing with international affairs since they forged diplomatic ties six decades ago.     Noting that the Chinese government values relations with Romania, Xi said his visit was to cement traditional friendship and reciprocal cooperation by taking the chance of 60th anniversary of bilateral ties. He already visited Belgium, Germany, Bulgaria and Hungary. 

BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Top political advisor Jia Qinglin has called on overseas Chinese businessmen to play their unique roles in promoting China's peaceful reunification.     Jia made the remarks on Wednesday in a meeting attended by representatives of the China Overseas Chinese Entrepreneur Association in Beijing. BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Wednesday urged the country's senior officials to take the 60th anniversary of the founding of the New China as a new start for carrying on its modernization drive while maintain social stability.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks when presiding over the 16th group study for the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, which was themed on understanding and practicing the socialist modernization since the founding of New China.     "Many important revelations come up if we look back on how the Party has led people on the path of socialist modernization," said Hu, stressing the importance of upholding economic development as the central task and promoting comprehensive and sustainable development.     Hu stressed the study of the principle of "freeing our mind, seeking truth from facts, be united and look ahead", which was put forward by late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping.     Hu said that policies regarding reform should be scientific and the methods of practicing these policies should be well-coordinated. Such reform policies should cover economy, politics, culture, society and all other aspects.     Hu emphasized on ensuring social stability while deepening reform.     "Without stability, nothing can be done and even those we have achieved will be lost. We should pay special attention to conflicts occurring among people and solve them properly," he said, adding that various issues that affect social stability should be coped with carefully to ensure people's livelihood.     Hu urged all study members to regard the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China as a new starting point to deepen socialist modernization and made new achievements in building a well-off society.

HAIKOU, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- The bodies of two people were retrieved in south China's island province of Hainan on Monday, bringing the death toll from the tropical storm Goni to five, local officials said.     The fourth was a fisherman who was killed when the fishing boat "Qiongdanzhou 00301" was wrecked at the Yangpu Port, while the fifth one, a fisherwoman, died after "Qiongdanzhou 52153" sank near Danzhou City, officials said.     Another two fishermen on "Qiongdanzhou 00301" and "Qiongdanzhou 00878", as well as four crew members on a Cambodian vessel are still missing, said an official with the Hainan marine search and rescue center.     The difficulty of rescue has increased as the provincial meteorologic center warned of continuous thunderstorms in northwestern Hainan in the following 24 hours, he said.     More than 1.6 million people in Hainan Province were affected by Goni, which forced local authorities to relocate 92,000, officials said.     It toppled more than 575 houses and damaged 2,311, as well as inundated 68,000 hectares of cropland, he said.     Goni landed in Hainan Wednesday and left China at 5 p.m. Sunday.
