In Baltimore, there’s a man named Dwayne Benbow Jr., but you probably know him better as “The Funnel Cake King”.“We can say funnel cakes we got funnel cakes, we have gourmet funnel cakes over here,” he said. “It’s the same principals, it’s a hustling mentality.”On a sweltering Thursday afternoon, he laid out his plan to take fill the chessboard that is Baltimore City with young funnel cake knights.“Dispatch them, boom we got one at Greenmount. Her son is going to be on Greenmount her son right here he’s going to be on Pratt and Monroe.”The court started small but at this orientation, the number of young employees grew to over ten.“I kept seeing kids on their bikes kids they trying to get out. They ain’t trying to hear this stay in the house stuff.. everybody calling me like yo I’m tired of my kids, take my kids from me.”Ameen Bailey got the job because his mom reached out.“The funnel cake king he basically like a father figure to all the kids,” Ameen said. “He hires people so they don’t gotta be on the corner. He shows us how to make our own businesses and how to progress more.”His brother Amir Bailey will be working with him.“I’m learning how to keep myself in check, how to interact with others, and how to keep my areas clean,” Amir said. The head that bears the crown didn’t come this way. Before starting his first snowball stand outside of the Terra Cafe Benbow Jr. was in prison for 7 years.Taking that time to grow.“I want to barber school, computer repair, fiber optics,” Benbow Jr. said. “Got half of my degree in sociology so that means I know how to speak to individuals.”Jordan Matthews was the first Knight to join the court.“He’s a black-owned business and he’s helping people by taking them off the streets and helping them work and get that money for the summer and stuff,” Matthews said.Benbow Jr. said he kept coming around so he offered him a job.“Now Jordan is able to run all run operations by himself,” said Benbow Jr. “He doesn’t need no adult no supervision or anything out here.”Every Knight gets a binder with a schedule and the 3 simple principals they have to abide by.Check your hygiene and appearance always.Make eye contact with customers and number one- no belt no work.“We can’t get upset at nobody else if we’re not physically doing it,” said Benbow Jr. “If we’re not physically grabbing them and putting the belts on them. If we’re not putting notebooks in their hands.”Isiah Johnson is 13 and this is his first chance to earn a paycheck.“Just making me more responsible and teaching me how to save money and get it.”Grooming the brightest gems under his crown to build their own empires.“Helping my mom out around the house and outside,” said Kalani Bowen. “Make some money for myself, but also help my mom pay bills and stuff.”“I’m in JOTC right now so I want to go to the Army,” Ameen said.Dorrian Vaughn is the youngest knight at 10-years-old.He’s looking forward to learning and hopes he learns principals to carry with him when he gets his dream job way down the road.“A police officer either that or a fireman,” Vaughn said. There’s only so much ground one king can cover, and Benbow Jr. hopes more people take our young royalty and build them up.“Grabbing them while they are young pulling them in teaching them all that we can teach them and pass them to the next entrepreneur.”If you’re hungry from this article and want to find the Funnel Cake King follow him on any social media platform.WMAR's Eddie Kadhim first reported this story. 3505

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have released more people seeking asylum in the United States from custody, citing a shortage in space. The release comes as thousands of people fleeing violence in Central America as part of a migrant caravan are beginning to arrive in Tijuana, hoping to enter the U.S. and claim asylum here.Earlier this year, federal officials released several hundred families to relatives, church groups or other organizations due to statutory limitations on how long people can be held in custody."These people, they don't speak English they don't have any money, and they are in another country and they don't have a cell phone to call their relatives," said Magdalena Shwartz, who works with churches and ICE to help find places to stay until relatives can pick up those the government releases. For families detained by immigration authorities, under a settlement agreement and subsequent decision, unaccompanied children or families can only be held in custody for 20 days before being released while their cases work their way through immigration courts.Pastors at a church in Mesa said they recently received a call from ICE asking if the church could help at least one hundred people, who were dropped off Tuesday. Others were given a bus ticket and dropped off at a bus station in Phoenix."They don't have another option," Shwartz said. "They cannot keep the people detained there for a long time, because they are getting more people."Multiple attempts to seek comment from Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Tuesday's release were not returned. Those who are ultimately granted asylum by a judge are allowed to stay, while those whose applications are denied will be deported. 1747

If you don't wear a mask in Houston, Mayor Sylvester Turner says the police could start issuing you a citation or fine you 0.Mayor Turner made the announcement on Monday, which could see people being fined 0 if they don't wear a face-covering apparatus during the coronavirus pandemic."Today, I am announcing that we will begin issuing citations to people who are not wearing masks under the state's mandatory mask order," Mayor Turner said in his tweet. "Houston Police will issue warnings and citations to anyone not wearing a mask in public if they don't meet the criteria for an exemption.""The citation comes with a 0 fine," Mayor Turner continued. "Lives are at stake, so I am taking this step to save lives and slow the virus from spreading in the month of August."Houston police will not respond to 9-1-1 calls about people who aren't wearing masks, Fox5 reported. In early July, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a statewide mandate that masks must be worn in public in any county with 20 or more coronavirus cases, Forbes reported. 1053

If you're planning on voting with an absentee or mail-in ballot, chances are you feel pretty protected from COVID-19 while voting this year. But what if you're voting in-person? Experts weigh in on staying safe when heading to your polling place. The first piece of advice is to have a plan."The example I would give would be going to the grocery store. That's something that caused people a lot of anxiety when we first were dealing with the pandemic back in March, and I think for many of us, it’s becoming relatively routine. It's not how we shopped for groceries back in January but it's something that we’ve learned to do. I think voting can be the same," said Dr. Jay Varkey, an infectious disease doctor and Associate Professor at Emory University.Dr. Varkey says to know the COVID-19 transmission rates in your community, as well as your own personal risk, if you were to become infected with COVID-19."To give some specific examples, masking is absolute, and I would want to make sure that there is a universal mask mandate in place and not just those that are going to cast their votes but workers as well," said Dr. Varkey.Dr. Varkey says wearing a mask that has at least two layers and wearing it properly is key. Also, ensure your polling place allows you to socially distance from other voters. Dr. Varkey says standing more than 6 feet away from others is preferred. Also, it’s great if your polling place is keeping doors and windows open to increase airflow."The other thing, and I know this is hard to do, the more we can actually limit the amount of talking, or certainly yelling or singing or anything else going on, is the more we can reduce our chances of passing these infectious droplets that can aerosolize, and that tends to really occur when people are talking. Masks reduce that risk, but we can really reduce it more by, well, talking less," says Dr. Varkey. In Madison, Wisconsin, poll workers will be ensuring voters are socially-distanced and frequently disinfecting all voting booths, pens and other frequently touched items. City Clerk Maribeth Witzel-Behl has been working closely with their local health department."We will have plexiglass glass set up for stations where poll workers have to interact with voters within 6 feet of each other, and for other poll workers who are not at those stations, they’ll have access to face shields if they like," said Witzel-Behl.Poll workers are also being told to follow a strict set of health guidelines in order to volunteer."If they've had a fever within the last few days or taken a fever-reducing medication in the past few days, they can’t work at the poll. If they've had any COVID-19 symptoms or been exposed to someone with COVID-19 or had a cough within the past week they can’t work at the polls," said Witzel-Behl.So, do you need to bring a container of disinfecting wipes with you to the polls?"I put the priority first on the masks and keeping your distance but that last part on how to take a relatively safe activity, like voting and make it extra safe, there’s two things I would bring with me into the voting booth. One is my own pen the other is hand sanitizer," said Dr. Varkey. 3182

If someone tells you any words other than "misinformation" and "toxic" are the words of the year, it's fake news.Dictionary.com chose the word "misinformation" on Monday and said it intentionally went with "mis" over "dis." It's the idea of intent, whether to inadvertently mislead or do it on purpose, the website wanted to highlight, according to the Associated Press."The recent explosion of misinformation and the growing vocabulary we use to understand it have come up again and again in the work of our lexicographers," Dictionary.com says. 554
