SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s more affordable to rent than buy a home in San Diego, according to a report released Thursday. The 2020 Rental Affordability Report consisting of census data compiled by ATTOM Data Solutions broke down the figures for counties nationwide. Although the price of owning a median-priced three-bedroom home was more affordable than renting in 53 percent of U.S. counties studied, renting was a better financial decision in highly populated suburban or urban areas. RELATED: San Diego expected to be California's hottest housing market in 2020, despite coolingIn counties with a population of more than one million people, including San Diego, renting was a more affordable option 84 percent of the time. Los Angeles County and the counties of Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Seattle were also included in the figure. San Diego made the list of major counties where rents consume the highest percentage of average wages. 1. Santa Cruz County: 82.1 percent2. Marin County: 75.3 percent3. Park County, CO (Denver): 74.3 percent4. Honolulu County, HI: 74.2 percent5. Kauai County, HI: 73.7 percent6. Kings County, NY (Brooklyn): 65.3 percent7. Orange County: 64.7 percent8. San Diego County: 59.6 percent9. Contra Costa County: 58.4 percent10. Queens County, NY: 57.4 percentSan Diego was also one of the counties where home prices rose faster than wages and wage growth outpaced rent growth. However, there are distinct differences between different places, depending on the size and location from core metro areas,” said Todd Teta, chief product officer with ATTOM Data Solutions. “For sure, either buying or renting is a financial stretch or out of reach for individual wage earners throughout most of the country in the current climate. But with interest rates falling, owning a home can still be the more affordable option, even as prices keep rising.” RELATED: Making it in San Diego: Key saving steps helped renter buy her first homeThe report included 2019 and 2020 data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and public record sales data from ATTOM Data Solutions. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Lime is rolling its dockless scooters and bikes out of San Diego, a month after a hearing officer ruled the company could keep its operating permit.Lime announced Thursday they would not be renewing their permit to operate in San Diego but would monitor the opportunity to return in the future.“As part of our path to profitability, Lime has made the difficult decision to exit San Diego and focus our resources on markets that allow us to meet our ambitious goals for 2020," a statement from Lime said. "We’re grateful to our team members, riders, Juicers and communities who supported us throughout this journey. We appreciate the partnership we’ve enjoyed with San Diego and remain hopeful we can reintroduce Lime back into the community when the time is right."RELATED: City Council committee OKs changes to dockless scooter, bike lawThe company said it tried to work with city leaders on compliance and safety concerns, but was instead forced to defend its permit — which it did successfully. Lime added that the city's most recent regulations have led to a decrease in ridership and that the city has not been transparent when it comes to towing by city-contracted and private towing companies. In December, city council leaders voted to ban electric scooters from the city's boardwalks at Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, Mission Bay Park Bayside Walk, and La Jolla Shores. A month before, city leaders passed new regulations for e-scooters and bicycles, including a speed limit drop from 15 to 8 miles per hour on boardwalks, a ban on parking scooters in certain areas, and permitting fees.RELATED: San Diego scooter ridership drops off dramaticallyLime said it is also ending operations in Atlanta, Phoenix, and San Antonio as part of its "path to profitability."In September 2019, Uber also made the call to pull its dockless scooters and bikes out of San Diego. The company said at that time that, “we agree with local elected officials in San Diego who’ve said current micromobility regulations foster an unsustainable operating environment."Data released in October 2019 showed 222,076 people rode the dockless vehicles in the two week period ending Oct. 15, down from 441,830 rides from July 15 to July 30. 2243

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It's a nervewracking place: on stage, behind the mic, looking out at a sea of people waiting for your punch line. The Comedy Palace in Kearny Mesa sees many comedians but not like the one who performed Friday night."It was something I thought about even in college but lacked the courage to do it," said Michael Schmid. "I always loved to make people laugh."Schmid always had the passion, but it was a recent visit to the doctor that gave him the courage he had been lacking."If not now, when," Schmid said.Three years ago, he was diagnosed with primary lateral sclerosis, a condition similar to ALS."It had spread to my upper body and becoming more quadriplegic," Schmid said. One month ago, he made the toughest decision of his life."The most difficult thing I ever had to do in my life was to talk to my children about ending my life."Schmid says he will end his life on December 27, citing severe pain. He shared the date with one of his favorite comedians, along with a dream and a request for help."My initial response was 'We're going to make this happen,'" said Lisa Alvarado.Alvarado talked with some friends in the industry to see if they'd help make Schmid's dream of performing come true."I'm talking comics with Netflix specials, Comedy Central specials," Alvarado said.In one month, the group developed a 15-minute standup comedy routine for Schmid to deliver Friday night. Many of the professional comedians were in the audience as Schmid performed in his wheelchair with Alvarado holding his microphone. After the performance, Schmid's father made his way to the stage to give his son a hug."I never expected him to do that and show the world we're close," said Schmid.Schmid's ex-wife and his four children were also in the audience."No matter how crappy of a hand he's been dealt, he's taken it with a joke," said Schmid's son Joshua.Schmid is grateful he had a chance to laugh."I want my friends and family to have at least that memory when I'm gone," Schmid said. "Do not just give up where you're at...always strive and reach for something else.""Even if it is the end of your life, you can be more than you are right now." 2188

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Millions of Americans are uninsured during the coronavirus pandemic, with more at risk of losing their jobs and in turn losing their healthcare coverage.A 17-year-old boy in Lancaster was reportedly denied treatment at an urgent care clinic there and instead told to go to a hospital. On the way to the hospital, he went into cardiac arrest, according to Mayor R. Rex Parris in a video posted to YouTube.RELATED: Reports of alleged child abuse drop in San Diego since school closuresParris said when the teen got to the hospital he was revived, but died hours later. The teen tested positive for COVID-19, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is still evaluating his case, so he has been removed from the Los Angeles County death toll for now."Once you go into respiratory issues, you have trouble breathing, you're short of breath and you have a fever," said Parris. "That is the time to get medical treatment without delay."RELATED: App helps users locate where essential items are in stockThat is the problem for the millions of uninsured Americans. Although testing for COVID-19 may be free, treatment is not.10News asked health officials at a San Diego County press conference about what's being done to reassure uninsured San Diegans that they won't be turned away like the 17-year-old in Lancaster."In general if individuals do not have insurance, there is the county's phone number, or they can call 211. That's probably the easiest thing to do, is call 211," said San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten.RELATED: Unemployment benefits could take weeksWe asked if someone would be turned away if they tried to get help at an urgent care clinic with COVID-19 symptoms, but did not have insurance."When somebody presents to a specific facility for care and it's not emergent there is usually a process for them to determine whether that is an appropriate place for them to be cared for," explained Dr. Eric McDonald, the Medical Director for the County Epidemiology and Immunization Branch. "For example if it's an insurance related thing and they don't have insurance for that facility, they may be asked to go to another facility, the good news is in San Diego we have a very good mechanism through 211 for individuals who don't have insurance to be able to access clinics where they will be accepted for care."RELATED: California Gov. Newsom says 5 banks to waive mortgage feesRight now Covered California is providing a special enrollment period because of the coronavirus.Uninsured, eligible Californians can apply for free or low cost health insurance coverage through the end of June. You can apply online here. 2679
