(KGTV) - A North County non-profit is helping homeless veterans get back on their feet and transition from military to civilian life.Wounded Warrior Homes runs three houses in Oceanside, Vista and Escondido.They help homeless veterans with "invisible" wounds like PTSD or brain injuries.Co-Founder Mia Roseberry says getting the vets into a safe, reliable home is often the most important step towards recovery."When you have a safe place to sleep, and you know you’re going to be safe when you open your eyes, and you’re going to be able to eat and have a place to take a shower and you’re safe, then you can go, "Oh, what’s next?'" says Co-Founder Mia Roseberry.According to the latest Point in Time count of the homeless, there are approximately 1,100 homeless veterans in San Diego County.Army Veteran Russ Hudson was one of them. After serving from 2009 to 2013, he suffered from PTSD. Hudson struggled with drug addiction and was in and out of shelters and assistance homes."I was in a dark place," he says. "I was stressed out, I wasn't able to sleep at night." trouble sleeping.Now, he's found stability with Wounded Warrior Homes. He's begun work training service dogs for other veterans dealing with PTSD."I love animals," Hudson says. "I’m from Mississippi, I grew up on a farm, I love dogs, and I was like, hey I’ll give it a try."He's the kind of success story that Wounded Warrior Homes helps create. Roseberry says housing a few veterans in each home helps keep them connected to the community."If you live in your own place, like in a one bedroom apartment, no one really knows you’re isolating yourself," she says. "With this, your roommates will ask why they didn’t see you at breakfast, or at dinner or during the day. They will call each other on it and drag each other out of the room."Volunteers help refurbish the homes and the organization offers weekly check-ins for the veterans. OCEANSIDE, Calif., (KGTV) — The regional shutdown of many business sectors begins Sunday at 11:59 p.m., leaving thousands of people jobless in the middle of the holiday season.Donald Murray is a regular customer at Copperwood Barber Shop in Oceanside."[I get the] 'High and tight' I guess is what they call it," Murray laughed. "Low maintenance."Brothers Allen and Sherman Morris opened the shop in 1988, serving thousands of customers simple cuts. But this year, business has been anything but simple."We don't understand why they keep shutting us down," barber Adriana Hinojosa sighed.Hinojosa says since the pandemic began in March, customer numbers dipped under 50%. Owner Sherman Morris has not been into his shop due to health risks."We don't want him to get sick," Hinojosa said.The old school shop made adjustments with every new restriction, serving customers in every other chair, buying sanitation goods, and even going outside for a few weeks."This summer, it was hot, we were sweating, the customers were sweating, so it was kind of hard," Hinojosa said.But once again, they must shut their doors completely. Officials with Operation Warp Speed confirmed Wednesday that they remain on track in their goal to distribute 20 million initial doses of COVID-19 vaccines by the end of the month.Health and Human Services Sec. Alex Azar, as well as Operation Warp Speed chief medical adviser Dr. Moncef Slaoui and the operation's chief operating officer Gen. Gus F. Perna, said Wednesday that the first shipments of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine were delivered largely without issue.The briefing comes just two days after medical centers across the country began administering the first initial doses of a COVID-19 vaccine made by Pfizer. That vaccine was approved for Emergency Use Authorization by the FDA last Friday and was formally recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention over the weekend.The briefing also comes a day before a vote by an FDA panel on whether to recommend a COVID-19 vaccine produced by Moderna for Emergency Use Authorization. Should the panel vote in favor of the recommendation, it would keep the Moderna vaccine on track for authorization by next week.In a report released Tuesday, the FDA reaffirmed Moderna's safety and efficacy statistics that were published following the conclusion of the drug's Phase III trial. Slaoui also said that a vaccine candidate produced by Johnson & Johnson is slated to fill its Phase III trials by tomorrow, and that initial efficacy data for that drug would be available by early January. One inmate was shot and at least five others were injured during a riot at Tehachapi Prison on Sunday, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation confirmed.According to CDCR, six inmates were hurt during a riot that broke out at the facility Sunday afternoon at about 1:33 p.m. Five were injured during the riot itself and another was shot by an officer "in the buttocks area," CDCR said.The inmate who was shot was transported with non-life threatening injuries. The condition of the other five injured inmates is unclear at this time. No guards or staff were hurt.CDCR says three shots were fired during the incident. (KGTV) — Neighbors in North County call this "Taking Back Oceanside.""We need to cite, we need to ticket, arrest when possible," said Andrew Andrioff. It's a response to a growing homeless population that's leaving neighbors frightened and frustrated. The San Luis Rey riverbed is covered with needles, tents, trash and shopping carts. Andrioff is behind the movement to change that. "we don’t want to enable these people to continue to their criminal and drug-addicted lives."Councilwoman Esther Sanchez says the city has three homeless outreach teams but they need more help. "This really is a regional problem, whatever one city does everyone is going to want to go there so we all have to go at the same time," said Sanchez. The problem has only gotten worse since the city is forced to take in more people than it can handle. "Are we going to really be responsible for Orange County cities that are cleaning out the river and giving them one-way tickets to Oceanside?" said Sanchez.
