SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As grocery stores work to fill consumer demand created by the coronavirus pandemic, several San Diego stores are hiring.Albertsons and Vons locations in the San Diego area are working to fill about 1,000 jobs, a spokesperson told 10News. So far, more than 200 of the positions have been filled and locations are actively conducting interviews. "We have a high volume of applications and still have many more jobs to fill," the spokesperson said.RELATED: Will you qualify for a ,200 COVID-19 stimulus check?Parent company Albertsons Companies is in the process of hiring about 30,000 new employees to respond to the demand. Under the federal government, supermarkets are considered "critical infrastructure" and are required to operate during the crisis. The openings are welcomed relief for not only grocery employees, but those seeking work as well.Since the COVID-19 pandemic created havoc on the economy, California has seen unemployment claims skyrocket. For the week ending March 21, the state saw a 363 percent increase in claims year-over-year:Week ending March 7, 2020: 48,385Week ending March 14, 2020: 57,606Week ending March 21, 2020: 186,809“We know there are many Californians who are really struggling to provide for their families because of the massive economic impact created by the Coronavirus,” said EDD Director Sharon Hilliard. “Unemployment benefits provide critical financial support and the EDD is employing all means necessary to get benefit payments out to those in need.”RELATED: 3.3 million seek US jobless aid, nearly 5 times earlier highAlbertsons Companies says it is partnering with a handful of major companies to offer their furlough workers part-time jobs at supermarkets as well.“The most valuable asset and the core of any business is people, and we are working hard with many Human Resource teams across a variety of businesses who are actively defining next steps for their employees,” said Albertsons Companies President and CEO Vivek Sankaran. “So many businesses in the hospitality and retail sectors are scaling back hours or temporarily closing as their customers remain home and adhere to shelter-in-place orders. We are grateful to be a resource to help fill a critical need in our own business and take care of people who want to continue working during this time of national emergency.” 2362

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California and 13 other states filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration Thursday, seeking to block changes to the federal food stamp program that would put 380,000 Californians at risk of losing benefits. The lawsuit claims the Trump administration failed to follow proper procedure and is undermining the intent of the food stamp program, known in California as CalFresh."No one should have to choose between a hot meal and paying their rent," said California Attorney General Xavier Becerra in a statement. "But this latest Trump Administration attack on low-income Americans will force them to do just that."RELATED: Thousands of San Diego senior citizens now eligible for food stampsBeginning in April, able-bodied adults without children will be required to show documentation every 90 days that they are working at least 20 hours per week or in vocational training. Otherwise, those adults can only receive three months of food stamps every three years.About 26,000 people in San Diego County would be impacted by the new rule, according to County Health & Human Services Agency spokeswoman Sarah Sweeney. The Trump administration estimates the change would save about .5 billion over 5 years. “These are taxpayer dollars and President Trump takes that very seriously,” said San Diego County Republican Party chairman Tony Krvaric. “Every dollar that is given to somebody who does not qualify, someone who is able-bodied, is taking resources away from somebody who actually truly need it.”RELATED: San Diegans relying on food stamps await word of program's future under shutdownVince Hall of Feeding San Diego said the federal food stamp program is a proven success. He said veterans will be particularly vulnerable to the changes.“Hunger is not going to motivate people who are already highly motivated, but it is going to disable their ability to find good productive jobs, to engage in meaningful job training programs,” he said. “Hunger is debilitating not empowering.”Hall said the cost of verifying people’s work requirements will likely exceed the cost of the food stamps themselves. The average recipient collects about 0 a month, he said. 2196

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- At the Sycuan Visitors Center in El Cajon, you'll find pieces of history on display. Tools, clothing, baskets, even instruments, all tracing their origin to the Kumeyaay people."We were very important in shaping this landscape, so we developed the landscape and the landscape developed us," said Ethan Banegas, who teaches Kumeyaay history and is Kumeyaay himself. The Kumeyaay people live on 12 reservations in southern California and six in Mexico. Their history is rooted deeply in the San Diego area."We have old village sites all over. Old Town, where the first mission was, was an old village called Kasoy, " Banegas explained. According to Banegas, at one point, the Kumeyaay people lived from the desert to the mountains to the ocean and numbered between 30 and 50 thousand.RELATED: Native American tribes join to celebrate life and heritage at San Diego powwowBy the late 1800s, historians estimate the Kumeyaay population had dwindled to as low as 1000. Even as numbers started to rebound, the language and music continued to fade. Banegas says at one point traditional singers had all but disappeared. However, there was a resurgence in the 1960s that continues today."We have a whole generation learning these songs that were basically gone."As for the language, there are only about a dozen speakers left in the U.S. and a few dozen more in Mexico. But there's an effort underway to teach young people and keep it alive. Banegas says a turning point for many tribes was gaming, which provided an economic solution to the severe poverty many people experienced on the reservations. Today Banegas and others are using education to keep their culture alive and hope that during this Native American heritage month, San Diegans take time to remember the people who've called this land home for thousands of years. 1849
