SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The COVID-19 pandemic has left a big question mark in regards to NCAA athletics. However, that is not the case with California Junior Colleges, otherwise known as the CCCAA, as they have already come up with a plan for the fall. That means for the next 5 months, athletic fields at Mesa College will be quiet until early 2021."There was a lot of talk," says Mesa College Athletic Director Ryan Schumaker, "and a lot of plans, that included getting sports back on the field quicker. But it just didn't seem feasible, especially when we saw the state start to take steps backwards. It just seemed like the right thing to do, to push it back as far as we could."So in the case of Mesa College, all 21 of their athletic teams will not get started until some point in the spring."The goal is to get our student athletes on campus safely, as well as our staff," says Mesa College Head Football Coach Gary Watkins. "I know we won't start practice until February, but there may be some time in January to get in front of the boys. At that time, will get them acclimated physically and mentally. Now, more than ever, they have to be all in on their academics, and their future development."And with will all sports being pushed back until the spring, the athletic department at Mesa will have to figure out how to share the facilities."The spring is now split into two distinct seasons. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The next time you hop in your car and drive through North Park, you could encounter one of 18 new traffic circles aimed to slow down drivers and promote caution and awareness. The executive director of SANGAG, Hasan Ikhrata, spoke Wednesday about the status of 18 intersection makeovers that include roundabouts similar one off Landis and Utah."It's obvious cars and bikes don't mix well together, especially if there's speeding involved so to overcome these we try our best to do things like this, but also make sure where we can, separate bikes from traffic so residents can bike without fear of being hit by a car," Ikhrata said.So far, million has been dropped for the Georgia Meade & Landis Bikeway project, funded by TransNet. Construction for the new additions are halfway done and although some neighbors aren't so keen about the new roadways, "people who want to go fast do go fast still, they still race. They have enough room to almost go straight through the circle." Others like 11-year North Park resident, Andrea, Linan, already feel more at ease, "traffic on this street especially, people go fast. I do cycling and you just have to be really careful about not getting hit so I don't mind roundabouts."SANDAG said since stay at home orders, the amount of people riding bikes went up 12%. SANDAG's executive director said despite conflicting arguments regarding the amount spent on the Bikeway project, "we have the data to support investing more in the Bikeway program, and I hope San Diego will have a connected network that's safe for our residents."The project has been in the works since 2013. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Federal Reserve's decision to lower its key interest rate to near zero will help some San Diegans, but frustrate others.The Fed reduced its Federal Funds Rate to near zero for the first time since the Great Recession of 2008. The move, in reponse to the Coronavirus outbreak, will help keep auto loan rates low and mortgage rates near historic lows. It will also, however, lower earnings from interest bearing savings accounts. Greg McBride, chief financial analyst for Bankrate, predicted the economy to go into a recession, but said the low borrowing rates would help jump start spending once activity picks up again. "Coming out of that, one of the things that's going to give the economy a boost to recover from that will be these brutally low interest rates that entice consumers and businesses to resume borrowing and spending," McBride said. "Somebody concerned about losing their job is not going to go to go out and buy a car."Mortgage rates are already extremely low, with the average rate for a 30-year fixed is 3.36 percent. Still, that's above the all-time lows reached earlier this month, when the Federal Reserve made its first emergency cut. Mark Goldman, a loan officer for C2 Financial Corp., said there has been a rush to refinance since that earlier drop — a big reason why rates did not fall deeper."There's so much refinancing business going on right now that lenders can't stand a lot more business, so they price accordingly," Goldman said.
