SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - A Solana Beach cafe closed its doors after their outdoor dining furniture was stolen.Owner Marie Brawn stood in the vacant concrete pad in front of her beloved Homestead Cafe and Market Friday morning telling surprised customers they weren't opening today."I just couldn't do it this morning, so we closed," she said disheartened.Seven tables and chairs were stolen in a rash of thefts down Cedros Avenue on Tuesday morning before dawn.Brawn said when she and her husband arrived to open later that day, they were confused. Tables and chairs were knocked over and about a fourth were missing. At first, Brawn thought a neighbor borrowed the tables, then it sunk in."It was just this moment of defeat, just one more notch, like really, just one more thing we need in our way," she said.Brawn achieved her dream of opening a restaurant with her husband just 18 months before the pandemic. Her whole life has centered around food. She started working in the restaurant business at 15 years old and met her husband through work. It took 10 years to open Homestead. When the pandemic hit, she said, "we just pivoted, we became an organic market with our cafe and we moved everybody outside."Neighbors pitched in, the farmer's market loaned tables, the landlord allowed them to expand to the parking lot. They were rebounding from the closure. Brawn said each time the business was doing well and they saved up enough money, they would buy another umbrella for the outdoor seating."Small businesses are struggling, we're all struggling and to be hit with something like this on top of it all, sometimes you wake up and wonder what is the purpose of it all," she said.Looking around after the theft, it's barren. Brawn said they felt obligated to return the loaned tables, "we gave them their stuff back because we can't afford to replace it."Now they have seven tables and no way to scrape by. Brawn said they have to have maximum capacity with COVID-19 standards in place to start to make a profit.Brawn said she's fueled to continue because of the charity work she and her husband do with +Box."Right now he's dropping off about 600 meals, so each box feed about a family of four," Brawn said. The non-profit was created to fill a need during the pandemic, feeding struggling families. Brawn and her husband have donated 14,000 meals so far.The boxes hold grains, vegetables, and other items Brawn said are hard for families to get. The non-profit helps neighborhoods all over North County and Brawn hopes others will extend the same kindness."When you're down, help someone else because if we all do that it's like a domino effect and before you know it we're all going to be in a better place so we have to stick together," she said.Brawn created a GoFundMe for their restaurant and to help them continue giving to the community. Since Sunday, federal immigration agents in Northern California have arrested over 150 people alleged to have violated immigration laws, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Tuesday. Half of them had criminal convictions, according to the agency. In the same statement announcing the arrests, the ICE Deputy Director Thomas D. Homan also lashed out at Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, who had publicly warned of the impending ICE operations the day before it began.Schaaf had issued a warning on Saturday and held a press conference the following day, announcing that she had learned that ICE would conduct operations in the Bay Area."I am sharing this information publicly not to panic our residents but to protect them," she had said. "My priority is for the well-being and safety of all residents -- particularly our most vulnerable."But Homan criticized Schaaf for what he described as her "reckless" and "irresponsible" decision."The Oakland mayor's decision to publicize her suspicions about ICE operations further increased that risk for my officers and alerted criminal aliens -- making clear that this reckless decision was based on her political agenda," Homan said in a statement. He said 864 immigrants with criminal records "remain at large in the community and I have to believe that some of them were able to elude us thanks to the mayor's irresponsible decision."Schaaf pushed back on ICE's criticism Tuesday."I do not regret sharing this information. It is Oakland's legal right to be a sanctuary city and we have not broken any laws," she said."We know that law-abiding residents live in fear of arrest and deportation every day. My priority is for the long-term well-being of Oakland, and I know that our city is safer when we share information that leads to community awareness."California and feds at odds 1838

SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) — Protests continue to move into the suburbs and other cities of San Diego County, including one Wednesday morning in Solana Beach along Highway 101.Mayor of Solana Beach Jewel Edson helped the two organizers put a rally together in the beach community in less than 24 hours. “We really wanted to this to be our city coming together,” said Edson. Roughly 100 people showed up with signs at Solana Beach City Hall. Susana Arnold, one of the two organizers, said "this is the passion that is existing in all of us, that is absolutely sick of the injustice. I think posting memes and sitting watching the news is not enough." The group, including many families with small children, took a knee at city hall before taking their march up the 101. Arnold and co-organizer Tina Zucker said they wanted their march to be local, peaceful and safe. Many cars driving by honked in support. "We are powerful once we say something," added Zucker. 970

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said this week he is in favor of passing another round of economic stimulus for Americans, but suggested the funds be targeted to a smaller number of Americans.McConnell told reporters on Monday that the next round of stimulus funds should cover Americans making less than ,000 per year, which is far lower than the threshold for stimulus funds during the last round of aid, which many Americans received in April and May.Congress is currently on recess, but is expected to begin discussions on another round of aid when it reconvenes July 20.In May, House Democrats approved a stimulus plan, which included ,200 checks for those making less than ,000 a year. The House's bill has yet to be considered by the Senate, which had a few Democratic priorities the GOP are standing firmly against – funds for states to count mail-in ballots in the fall and a lack of liability protection for companies. Both McConnell and President Donald Trump have stated support for a second round of stimulus. Last month, in an interview with Scripps Washington correspondent Joe St. George, Trump endorsed providing a second round of stimulus funds."We will be doing another stimulus package, it will be very good, very generous," Trump told St. George on June 22.Trump wouldn’t divulge details on what a second round of stimulus funds would look like. 1398
